Typhoons usually happen in summer and early autumn. In China, they often hit coastal areas like Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang and Taiwan.

Is everything OK
Xinyi: Yes, we're all right. Thanks. Our neighbour warned us
about it in time.
Jack: What a kind neighbour! What were you doing at the time
Xinyi: Oh, my family were having dinner when she called. We
didn't notice that the water was rising!
Jack: You're lucky!

Jiaming: Hi Kate. Are you OK That was a big earthquake!
Kate: Yeah! It scared me. I was doing my homework when the
building shook all of a sudden. What were you doing
when it started, Jiaming
Jiaming: Oh, I was doing some chores while my mother was
preparing lunch. The earthquake took us by surprise too.
Kate: Well, I'm glad we're all fine. Thanks for calling!

Susan: Wasn't the snowstorm last weekend terrible, Liu Yun Liu Yun: Yes, it really was!
Susan: What were you doing while it was snowing
Liu Yun: Not much. I was travelling on the train then. The ride
took five hours longer!
Susan: Oh no ... I heard many people couldn't get home. They
had to stay in hotels for the night.

“was/were+动词的现在分词”表示在过去某一时间段间内正在发生或进行的动作或状态。常与表示过去的时间状语连用,如yesterday, last night, last month等;或者与when, while, as引导的过去时间状语连用。

China has good early-warning systems to help people stay safe from harm. Don’t forget to check the warnings on your phone or online.
Language Points
1. Our neighbour warned us about it in time.
warn v. 警告;提醒注意
E.g. The teacher warned us not to run in the hallway.
The weather report warned that a heavy rain is coming.
2. I was doing my homework when the building shook
all of a sudden.
all of a sudden是一个固定短语,意为“突然;猛地”。
E.g. All of a sudden, the lights went out, and the room
became completely dark.
When I received the apology message from my best friend, all of a sudden, all the unhappiness disappeared.
3. The earthquake took us by surprise too.
这句话的意思是“地震让我们猝不及防”。take sb by surprise是固定搭配,意为“使某人意外;让某人措手不及”。
E.g. The sudden test took the students by surprise.
The news of winning the game took him by surprise.
4. The ride took five hours longer!
这句话中,ride的意思是“(乘车、骑车等的)行程;旅程”。
E.g. The bus ride to the museum takes about 40 minutes.
