Unit 5 Nature’s Temper
Reading Plus
Learning Objectives
1. understand the key information of storm chasing, such as
the risk and the importance of this job.
2. analyze the main idea and complete the summary of the text.
3. express your opinions on this job and discuss other
dangerous jobs with the class.
In this lesson you will:
Watch and Say
What is your first feeling when you see this video
Background Knowledge
The tornado is a type of storm. About 75% of the world's tornadoes occur in the United States.
Tornados also happen in China, but they are less common and usually not as strong as the most powerful ones in the United States.
If you could get important information of the storm but had to move a little closer, would you do it YES or NO
Free Talk
I guess most of you would say NO. But what if this wasn’t a choice What if it was your job
Let’s watch a real storm chaser at work.
风暴猎人
What are the possible reasons for them to chase the storms
Think and Share
collect data
take photos or videos
for adventure
challenge themselves
Tim Samaras (1975.11.12—2013.5.13)
Tim Samaras was an American
engineer and storm chaser.
He was the first person to use equipment to capture images inside tornados.
He also turned storm chasing into a science.
Read the text and circle T for true and F for false.
1. Storm chasers stay away from tornadoes to keep safe.
2. Tim Samaras was a storm chaser who also built
instruments for studying tornadoes.
3. The information collected by storm chasers can help
scientists warn people earlier.
4. Storm chasing is a very safe job because chasers have a lot
of knowledge.
5. Tim Samaras and his team died because their car was hit
by a tornado.

knowledge is not always enough
Read the text again and answer the questions.
1. List two things that storm chasers do during their jobs.
designed and built many different instruments for studying tornados
put equipment in the tornado’s path to collect information like wind speed and air pressure
2. According to the text, what two main benefits come from
the storm chasers’ work
It helps scientists make better forecast. And it helps people understand how to build stronger houses.
3. Why was the E1 Reno tornado particularly dangerous
(List two reasons)
It grew rapidly and changed its speed and direction. And it was very wide and had extremely powerful winds.
4. The text says storm chasers’ knowledge is “not always
enough to keep them safe.” What evidence from the text
supports this idea
Samaras and his team died while chasing the E1 Reno tornado in 2013.
Discuss and Share
After reading about Tim Samaras, do you think storm chasers are more like “scientists” or “adventurers”
I think they are more like scientists because their main goal is to collect data to understand storms and save lives, not just for adventure.
1
Read the text and complete the summary.
A tornado is a type of storm. It can hit ________ and move very quickly. Storm chasers get close to tornadoes to collect important __________. This can help scientists to make better ________. It can also change how people build ________. However, storm chasing can be a very _________ job. In 2013, Tim Samaras and his team ________when they were chasing the E1 Reno tornado. But storm chasers today continue to do such work. Their goal is to keep people_________.
suddenly
information
forecasts
houses
dangerous
died
safe
2
Discuss the questions.
1. What do you think of Tim Samaras's job as a storm
chaser
2. What do you need to be a good storm chaser
3. Do you know of any other dangerous jobs Why do
people do them
Some other dangerous jobs
fire fighters
drug police
acrobatic performer
All they face is extreme heat, smoke and unexpected dangers.
They fight against drug dealers who are often very violent and carry weapons.
One small mistake can cause a serious injury.
king crab fishermen
miner
They need to work in extremely cold weather, always under the risk of being swept into the freezing ocean by giant waves.
Their workplace deep in the ground is dark, tight, and filled with dust that can be harmful to breathe.
Language Points
1. Storm Chasing: A Dangerous but Important Job
chase v. / n. 追逐;追赶;追捕
E.g. The students chased each other on the playground
during the break. (v.)
The exciting car chase in the movie made everyone nervous.(n.)
2. When a tornado is about to hit, professional storm
chasers try and get close to it to collect important
information.
professional adj. 专业的;职业的
E.g. The doctor gave us very professional advice.
She is a professional dancer and has performed on many international stages.
3. Storm chaser Tim Samaras designed and built many
different instruments for studying tornadoes.
instrument有“乐器”的意思,但是在这句话里,它的意思是”仪器;仪表“。
E.g. We used different instruments like microscopes and
test tubes in our science experiment.
A thermometer is an important instrument for measuring temperature.
4. The equipment collects information about things
such as wind speed and air pressure.
wind speed and air pressure 指风速和气压
pressure n. 压力;压强
E.g. Too much homework puts a lot of pressure on
students.
When you pump air into a bicycle tire, you are increasing the air pressure inside.
5. It was 4.2 kilometres wide and had winds topping
480 kilometres per hour.
这句话的意思是“龙卷风的宽度达4.2公里,风速最高时速超过480公里。”
这里的 “topping” 来源于动词 “top”,意思是 “达到...的最高点” 或 “超过”。
E.g. The temperature is topping 35 degrees Celsius this
afternoon.
