This May Day, I volunteered at Shanghai’s famous Yuyuan Garden while others relaxed. It was my first time to volunteer abroad. My job was simple: giving directions (方向) to visitors.
I worked with a classmate and two kind Chinese aunts. They taught me important things. One aunt said, “Speak slowly. When giving directions, use your whole hand, not one finger (手指).” I learned that pointing with one finger is not a good way in China.
At first, visitors didn’t ask me questions. Maybe they thought I couldn’t speak Chinese. So, I smiled and said in Chinese: “Welcome, How can I help you ” People were surprised when I spoke Chinese well.
One family from Shaanxi drew my eyes. Their little son shouted “Waiguoren”. The father looked unsure, but an aunt encouraged him: “He’s our foreign volunteer friend. He speaks Chinese.”
The father then talked with me. We didn’t just talk about the garden, we shared our cultures. He asked why many Africans eat with hands, not chopsticks (筷子). I explained some traditional foods like fufu are easier to eat by hand. He asked if I could use chopsticks. “Yes,” I said, “but it took years to learn!” We both laughed.
I asked about his hometown, Shaanxi. His face lit up brightly. He told me Shaanxi is important in Chinese history. It’s home to Xi’an, an ancient city with the Terracotta Army and special noodles called biangbiang. His son practiced English words with me excitedly.
That day showed me how a smile and openness build bridges between cultures. Volunteering taught me more about China than I expected. Every visitor shared different foods and traditions.
To students: Your lessons aren’t just in books. Stepping outside China offers wonderful experiences—you just need to ask and search. Real-life moments teach you things classrooms never can.

Volunteering is becoming more and more popular among people, especially the young. It is a great way to contribute to society while also developing oneself.
Last summer, I joined a volunteer program at an old-people’s home. On the first day, when we arrived, the elderly people welcomed us warmly. We were divided into groups to do different tasks. Some of us cleaned the rooms and swept the floors. Others chatted with the old people, listening to their stories about the past. These stories were full of wisdom and life experiences. They made me understand the value of respecting the elderly and the importance of history.
One of the most meaningful activities was organizing a performance for them. We prepared some simple songs and dances. The old people enjoyed every minute of it. Their bright smiles and applause made all our hard work worthwhile. It was a wonderful feeling to bring joy to others.
However, volunteering is not always easy. Sometimes, we faced difficulties. For example, communicating with some elderly people who had hearing problems was a challenge. But we didn’t give up. We used gestures and wrote down words on paper to communicate with them. Through these experiences, I learned patience and how to solve problems in different situations.
Volunteering has changed me a lot. It has made me more responsible and empathetic. I realize that everyone can make a difference in the world, no matter how small the act may be. National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect opportunity (机会) to ask others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization’s expectations (期望). Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also prevents (阻止) some people from sharing their abilities.

★ Work with a veteran volunteer. He volunteered a lot, he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization’s expectations.
★ Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.
★ Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right opportunity.

Last weekend, I went to visit the children at the Children’s Hospital. The children there are lonely. Some of them are disabled, while some of them suffer from serious illnesses.
I spent time with them, doing a series of activities. I taught them to make comic strips to help them express their feelings through pictures and stories. Then, I made paper cuttings with them. The paper cuttings were put on the walls of their rooms and make the rooms warm and beautiful. At the end of the visit, we sang songs together because music can bring them joy and peace.
This unforgettable visit is interesting and meaningful. It raised the children’s spirits. It also offered a good chance for me to realize how much I can do to help others. I will continue to do voluntary work in the future.

“Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person’s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person.” Mason, a volunteer said.
The following tips can help if you have some of these worries.
★ Start out slowly, don’t add too much pressure. Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone’s life.
★ Choose an organization with the same interests and common values.
★ Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.
Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people’s lives. As Mason discovered during his volunteer experience, “...little things can change a person’s life.”
