①Taking a photo every day and then sharing it online improves your happiness. That’s what scientists found after studying a group of people who joined in the photo-a-day projects.
②In the projects, a group of volunteers aged from 20 to 60 were chosen by the scientists. They posted a photo every day on the Internet. Over a two-month period, the scientists recorded the photos taken, the words added to the photos, and how the volunteers felt.
③The scientists found that the act of taking photos and sharing daily photos helps the volunteers pay more attention to themselves. “I have a really busy job. But I said to myself, ‘No, I will stop to relax. I’ll take a photo of the insect sitting on my computer or something.’ Just taking a moment is very helpful,” a volunteer told the scientists.
④Looking at the photos gives the volunteers a feeling of purpose. “It encourages me out of the house sometimes when I could just sit on my chair with a cup of tea,” another volunteer said. And on the social side, opinions on the photos keep people connected with their friends and family, and even help some fight unhappiness. Besides, photo-a-day helps volunteers look back on their own life. “If I’m feeling down, it’s nice to look back and see good memories. You know, the photos I’ve taken will bring back lots of good memories,” said one of the volunteers.

Two years ago, Holmes decided to do some voluntary work. He volunteered to work as a barber. He chose to spend Saturday giving free haircuts to poor kids so that they could look cool. But he had a game rule. “The kids receive their free haircuts by reading a book to me,” Holmes said.
The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the last two years. The kids would sit on the chair with a book and read aloud. If they had difficulty reading it, Holmes was there to help them. After the haircut, they would review the book just like in school.
“These kids are excited to learn,” said Holmes. “They want to open their minds.” Holmes, who had two sons aged three and four, believed that not every parent had the time to read with their kids. “I get it. You have four kids and you have two jobs. Sitting down and letting them read to you is the last thing you have time to do. You have to clean the house or cook dinner. So I say bring your kids in and let them read to me.
“There was a seven-year-old boy who tried his best to read his book, stuttering out words even though he didn’t have a stutter,” said Holmes. He let the boy take the book home and practice. “When the child came back a few days later, he read it with no problem. That encourages me.”
Holmes and his family have recently moved from Dubuque to a village in Chicago. When they got settled, he planned to go on with his role as the Storybook Barber. “Nowadays the world is full of violence,” he said. “But it’s safe for the kids to come to the barbershop and read books. They can get help from free reading.”

Did you know that when you’re kind to others, it’s also good for yourself Even small acts of kindness can raise 31 (you)confidence and help you feel more connected to the people around you.
Kindness means doing something thoughtful(体贴的)for others without 32 (expect)anything in return. It can be a small and simple act, like holding a door open, or something that 33 (take)time and effort, like making a gift for your friend by hand. Kindness isn’t just something you do; it also means being caring and considerate(考虑周到)about other people’s 34 (feeling), as well as your own.
Scientists have discovered 35 when you’re kind to someone, your body is filled with chemicals that make you feel calmer, healthier and 36 (happy). When you volunteer for a charity or join a litter pick, for example, you feel part of a community. This can improve your self-esteem(自尊)and build friendships. Kindness is also something that spreads, like ripples(涟漪)in a pond. If you do a good deed for someone, they might 37 (inspire)to do the same.
Studies show that kindness is something that we learn and get better at with practice. So start 38 something simple and easy, like messaging a friend who you 39 (lost)contact(联系)with for a while. Try to do something you enjoy, while keeping in mind that you’re doing it for others, and see if you can turn kindness into 40 habit.
31. your 32. expecting 33. takes 34. feelings 35. that 36. happier 37. be inspired 38. with 39. have lost 40. a
故填your。
故填that。
inspire sb. to do sth. 故填be inspired。
start with sth. 故填with。
故填have lost。
故填a。
