Think
Focusing on culture

1 Read the four poems and think about why and how we could help people in need.

Four poems about kindness
Little things
by Julia Abigail Fletcher Carney
Little drops of water,
Little grains of sand,
Make the mighty ocean
And the pleasant land.
Little deeds of kindness,
Little words of love,
Help make earth happy
Like the heaven above.
Julia Abigail Fletcher Carney was an American educator, poet, author, and editor in the 19th century. Her most famous work is the poem "Little Things"
Little things
by Julia Abigail Fletcher Carney
Little drops of water,
Little grains of sand,
Make the mighty ocean
And the pleasant land.
Little deeds of kindness,
Little words of love,
Help make earth happy
Like the heaven above.
The poem Little Things has simple but beautiful writing features. It uses short lines and strong parallel structures. It also has a clear rhyme scheme—sand rhymes with land, and love rhymes with above—and a simile that compares a happy earth to heaven. The poem conveys a meaningful message: small things can create great results. Just as tiny drops of water form the huge ocean and grains of sand make up the land, small kind acts and warm words can turn the earth into a happy place like heaven. This poem has great influence too. It teaches us to value small, good actions in daily life, and shows how even a small act of kindness can make a big difference.

Kind hearts are the gardens
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Kind hearts are the gardens,
Kind thoughts are the roots,
Kind words are the flowers,
Kind deeds are the fruits.
Take care of your garden,
And keep out the weeds,
Fill it with sunshine,
Kind words, and kind deeds.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a 19th - century American poet, educator and translator. His most famous works include the narrative poems Evangeline (1847), The Song of Hiawatha (1855), the ballad Paul Revere's Ride (1863).
Kind hearts are the gardens
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Kind hearts are the gardens,
Kind thoughts are the roots,
Kind words are the flowers,
Kind deeds are the fruits.
Take care of your garden,
And keep out the weeds,
Fill it with sunshine,
Kind words, and kind deeds.
This poem uses simple metaphors(隐喻) to compare kind hearts to gardens, kind thoughts to roots, kind words to flowers, and kind deeds to fruits. It also has neat parallel structures and a clear rhyme scheme (roots-fruits, weeds-deeds), making it rhythmic and easy to remember. The poem means that kindness grows like a garden—we need to care for kind thoughts, speak kind words and do kind deeds, while keeping out "weeds" of bad ideas. It often teaches us to be kind and nurture goodness in daily life.

I shall not live in vain.
Emily Dickinson (1830–1886) was a poet in the 19th century. She wrote about 1,800 poems. Her poems are about nature, life and faith. Her style is short and gentle. Her work has had a strong influence on modern poetry.

If I can stop one heart from breaking
by Emily Dickinson
If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
This poem by Emily Dickinson uses short lines, repeated sentences (I shall not live in vain) and simple "if" clauses, making it rhythmic and easy to follow. It also uses a small, warm example—helping a fainting robin back to its nest—to show true kindness. The poem conveys a meaningful message: a life is valuable if we can ease others’ pain, help those in need and do small, kind things. It has great influence too; it encourages us to care for others, and tells us helping others makes life meaningful.

I know you are feeling sad,
Because things aren't going right. Though I can't be with you there,

The poem expresses deep care for a sad friend—though the writer can’t be by their side, they write this poem to give support and hope. Many people like it for its true and kind tone. it teaches us that a few kind words can comfort someone in need. we should support our friends when they are sad.
The same:
These four short poems share the same warm theme of kindness and care, using simple words and short lines. They all tell us
that small kind acts or warm words can bring hope and comfort.
The difference:
However, they have differences in writing styles: Little Things and Kind hearts are the gardens use parallel structures and metaphors to compare small good things to natural scenes like oceans or gardens; If I can stop one heart from breaking repeats a key sentence to stress the value of helping others; I know you are feeling sad has no complex rhetorical devices, but its sincere tone makes it a direct and gentle message of care for a sad friend.

(1)What can we learn from helping others
4 Discuss the questions below.
We can learn that even small kind acts or warm words can make a big difference. Helping others can make the world a happier and better place, just like how small drops make the ocean. We also learn that being kind is a simple but powerful way to care for people around us.
(2)How can we help ourselves by helping others
Helping others can give our lives meaning and make us feel fulfilled. When we help ease others’ pain or support sad friends, we won’t feel our life is in vain. It is like taking care of a garden—nurturing kindness in others helps us grow a warm and happy heart too.

There are many different ways to help others. Donating blood is one of them.
1 Read the text about blood donation and answer the questions below.
Blood donation
Why donate blood
Donating blood saves lives. About one in seven people in hospital need blood in order to get better or even survive. Therefore, a blood donation can be a
life-giving gift for someone.
Who can donate blood
In many countries, a person needs to be healthy and older than 18 to donate blood. Blood donors should also weigh at least 50 kg.
What are the different blood types
It is important to know a person’s blood type before they donate or receive
blood. Most countries use the ABO system to group blood types. There are four main blood groups in this system: A, B, O, and AB.
Type O is the “universal donor”. This means that people of any ABO blood type can accept Type O red blood cells.(see purple lines)
Type AB is the “universal recipient”. People with this type of blood can usually receive red blood cells from donors with any ABO blood type.(see bottom-right part of illustration)
Recipient Donor
What is World Blood Donor Day
World Blood Donor Day(WBDD)is celebrated every year on 14 June. This date is the birthday of the Nobel Prize winner Karl Landsteiner. He discovered the ABO blood group system.
(1)Who is qualified to donate blood
(2)A patient with blood type B needs to receive blood immediately. What type(s) of blood can the patient receive
A healthy person who is older than 18 and weighs at least 50 kg is qualified to donate blood.
The patient with blood type B can receive blood that matches their type. Based on the text’s introduction of the ABO system, they can receive type B blood; additionally, type O is the universal donor, so they can also receive type O blood.
(3)Who was Karl Landsteiner and what did he discover
Karl Landsteiner was a Nobel Prize winner. He discovered the ABO blood group system.
