Body language is a very important part of communication, but do you know the same gesture can mean different things in different countries
Nodding your head usually means “YES”. Especially in Japan, nodding and bowing are the ways that locals show their agreement and respect. But in Bulgaria (保加利亚) and Greece, nodding up and down means “NO.”
Strong eye contact is very common in Spain, Greece and Arab (阿拉伯的) countries. However, in Finland and Japan, too much eye contact is |considered rude. To avoid embarrassment, they often look at the other person’s neck or shoulders instead.
Tapping your nose means “secret” in England while it means “be careful” in Italy.
In many cultures, like Italy and the U. S., people use their arms freely when talking. However, Northern Europeans don’t like gesturing with their arms. They think it is too dramatic Similarly, in Japan, gesturing with broad arm movements is thought to be impolite.
Sitting cross-legged is common in North America and some European countries. But in Asia and the Middle East, sitting like this is not respectful.
The “thumbs up” sign is another interesting example. In the U. S., it usually means “good job” or “everything is okay”. But in some Middle-Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Iran, this gesture is very offensive. It’s like a very bad word.
Understanding these differences helps us avoid misunderstandings. When you travel or talk to someone from a different culture, pay attention to their body language. You can make a big difference in how well you communicate!

A. The local didn’t want to answer Tom’s question. B. The local didn’t understand Tom’s question.
C. The local meant there isn’t a bank nearby. D. The local was not sure.

A. Look out! B. Keep quiet!
C. I disagree with you. D. It’s just between you and me.
3. If you’re chatting with a Japanese man, which of the following behaviors will make him feel comfortable

When we communicate with others, we often use body language.
Body language includes things like facial expressions, eye contact and posture (姿势). It actually developed as a form of communication before humans could speak or write. We can tell a lot about what a person is thinking or feeling just by looking at them.
In fact, body language is so common that you may not even realize that you are sending many messages to others every day without even using words.
For example, you might move your head from side to side to express the word “no”. You might give a “thumbs up” to show that you like or agree with something. Or, you might cross the thumb with the index finger (食指) to form the shape of a heart to represent love.
But now we are spending more time online. Our “digital (数字的) body language” is becoming increasingly important as we change how we communicate. For instance, instead of using voice messages, you can video chat with your friends to show them your face.
Another way to express your emotions digitally is through emojis “When we are communicating online, we are only revealing (显示) the content and leaving out vocal tones (音调) and facial expressions,” Moitree Banerjee, a lecturer of psychology (心理学) at the University of Chichester in England, told Digital Trends. That’s when “emojis can help greatly in communication.”
41. Can we tell person’s thought or feeling by his or her body language
42. What does body language include
43. How do we show our emotions online
44. Do you like to use “digital body language” in your daily life Why or Why not
41. Yes, we can. 42. It includes things like facial expressions, eye contact and posture. 43. By video chatting with our friends to show them our face and through emojis.
44. Yes, I often use emojis because it is interesting and it can help me communicate with others.
41. 根据第二段“We can tell a lot about what a person is thinking or feeling just by looking at them.” Yes, we can.
42. 根据第二段“Body language includes things like facial expressions, eye contact and posture (姿势).” It includes things like facial expressions, eye contact and posture.
43. 根据第五段“For instance, instead of using voice messages, you can video chat with your friends to show them your face.”和第六段“Another way to express your emotions digitally is through emojis (表情符号).” By video chatting with our friends to show them our face and through emojis.
Yes, I often use emojis because it is interesting and it can help me communicate with others.

Body Language in China
We often use body language in our daily life. I’d like to tell you something about it in China.
When we meet each other, we often smile and shake hands. What’s more, when we agree with each other, we will nod our heads. However, when we have different opinions, we will shake our heads instead. Eye contact is important during conversations because it shows you are listening carefully. However, when talking with elders, you’d better not keep looking into their eyes for too long, as this may be seen as rude. Besides, to make a good impression on others, you should smile at others when talking with them.
I hope my advice will help you and you can have a good time in China.

One bright morning, I was out for my usual run when I met an old lady. She was waving her phone at me and speaking in a language I couldn’t understand. It sounded like she was in a hurry to get somewhere. I quickly realized that she was lost and couldn’t speak any English.
