Every year — for more than 15 years running — Amazon editors come together and read hundreds of books.
From there, they make a list of favorites, cutting it down from 60 to 40 and then finally to 20, during a heated
debate in Seattle. It’s a long process where emotions run high. Below are 4 of the top 20 picks of 2023, along with
第 2页/共 24页
quotes (引述) from the editors.
Hello Beautiful
by Ann Napolitano
“Ann Napolitano creates a touching story that centers on the Padavano sisters, who are close to each other —
until they aren’t. Hello Beautiful offers big emotions, and that’s exactly what makes it so powerful and so
page-turning, which is why we named it the Best Book of 2023 So Far.” — Al Woodworth
Weyward
by Emilia Hart
“Though divided by centuries, three women, who share a unique connection to the natural world and to one
another, tell their attractive stories of ill treatment, danger, and adaptability in a beautifully written novel that is an
impressive read.” — Seira Wilson
Poverty, by America
by Matthew Desmond
“In 200 powerful and critical pages, Matthew Desmond lays out a clear explanation of inequality that will
make you rage (发怒), give in, and feel shame. This book may not be the easiest read, but it’s one of the most
important ones.” — Lindsay Powers
King: A Life

As I walked toward my kindergarten teacher’s desk, I felt excited. Mrs Stuchio pulled out the little plastic
chair and told me to sit. I placed my workbook on the table and began. “A pig can jig,” I recited. “Excellent,” she
said. “Go on.” As I read the words and looked at the pigs, I felt strong, smart... happy.
I don’t remember much else about that day in 1974 at the Hills School in Dix Hills, but when I realized that
sounding out letters on a page allowed me to read an entire story, I was attracted. When I was old enough to read
chapter books, I couldn’t get enough of them, like Harriet the Spy, All-of-A-Kind Family, etc. Then I graduated to
Danielle Steel and Sidney Sheldon. Back then, the “young adult” type didn’t exist; I went straight from family
breakfast scenes to love stories, like Evergreen by Belva Plain.
At junior high school, English became my favorite class. I have vivid memories of Mrs Ayers reading The
Cask of the Amontillado aloud as my eighth-grade classmates and I sat fascinated by her deep and emotional voice.
In following English classes, my teachers assigned demanding books such as The Stranger, A Tale of Two Cities
and complex research papers. For the first time, I felt book-related anxiety.
After getting my college degree in English and working at seventeen magazines, books called again: I left to
get my teaching certification. As a new English teacher in Manhattan, I stressed the importance of immersive
reading. Annotations (注释), I felt, broke the drive. “Sustained silent reading”, during which students spent entire
periods reading, was essential to my curriculum.
Today, as a librarian at Manhasset High School, I promote reading with enthusiasm. In a recent ninth-grade
class, I created a “reading workout”. Students sampled books spread across tables and read with no schedule. I’d
never seen them more engaged. For now, I’ll keep getting lost in reading and use my platform as a librarian to share
my passion.
4. What made the author first find reading attractive
A. Reading chapter books. B. Discussing young adult books.
C. Sounding out letters on a page. D. Engaging with romance stories.
5. What can we learn about the author in junior high school
A. She found English classes boring.
B. She preferred reading demanding books.
C. She was attracted by family breakfast scenes in books.
D. She started to feel stressed about some reading tasks.
6. What did the author emphasize in reading during her teaching
A. Group reading. B. Critical reading.
C. Uninterrupted reading. D. Relaxing reading.
7. How did the author motivate the ninth-grade class to read
A. By setting a reading schedule.
B. By asking students to write reading notes.
C. By making students read aloud together.
D. By supporting students in reading freely without schedule.
C
Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the
waves, or on the grassland, you should know that your choice of sport might have great influence on the
environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry(消耗资源). Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of
countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its
courses(球场)in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of
Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environmentally-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today.
You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources
and your wallet. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for
your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep
well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environmentally-friendly equipment and buying
products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms(健身房;体育馆)”. They are
better replacements(代替物)for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play
sports outdoors, in the countryside or some other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your
membership. And best of all, it’s free.
8. What do we know about golf from the passage
A. It pollutes the environment with all sorts of chemicals.
B. It needs water and other energy to keep its courses green.
C. It is very popular in Portugal and Spain.
D. It causes water shortages around the world.
9. Which of the following is NOT the advantage of power walking according to the passage
A. It is environmentally-friendly. B. It improves our health.
C. It is simple and free. D. It can make you put on weight.
10. Which sport is the writer most likely to advise us to do
A. Playing basketball in a gym. B. Motor racing in the desert.
C. Cycling around a lake. D. Swimming in a sports center.
11. What is the main purpose of writing the passage
A. To show us some major outdoors sports.
B. To encourage us to go in for green sports.
C. To discuss the influence of some popular sports
D. To introduce some environmentally-friendly sports.
D
Space tourism is not all about rockets — giant space balloons can do it too! The Spain-based company
HALO Space completed the first test flight of its balloon in December 2023. This marked another company’s
joining the competition of making space tourism a reality.
During the test flight, the balloon reached an altitude of 37 kilometers where passengers would be able to view
Earth from the blackness of space, according to Daily Mail. When the flights are available, the company aims to
carry 3,000 passengers on 400 trips every year.
The balloon is usually filled with helium (氦气) or hydrogen, which are both much lighter than air, and it flies
because of the buoyancy force (浮力). According to NASA, the balloon is filled with the amount of gas that will
give it enough lift to get off the ground and rise. As it rises, the gas inside the balloon expands because atmospheric
pressure drops. The atmosphere is 100 to 200 times less dense (稠密的) at float altitudes than on the ground. The
balloon stops when the density of the gas inside and the air outside is about the same — neutral buoyancy (中性浮
力) is achieved. It then begins to descend (下降) as gas is let out.
Therefore, the whole trip is not stressful. Another company that gives out space tours by balloons, the
US-based Space Perspective claims that the trips are about relaxation. The craft (飞行器) rises slowly at 12 miles
(about 19.3 kilometers) per hour, and it takes about two hours to get to the 30 km altitude.
Since its successful test flight in June 2022, Space Perspective started selling tickets for spaceflights in 2024
— and it has already sold out. The company now buys ships to turn them into “floating spaceports”, reported Daily
Mail. By lifting the craft from ships on the sea, there will be more launch opportunities, such as flights at sun rise
and sunset.
12. What is the purpose of the test flight of the balloons
A. To teach people life skills in space. B. To make space travel come true.
C. To test the speed of the balloons. D. To sell more tickets for space research.
13. What’s the height of HALO Space’s first test flight
A. 12 miles B. 19.3 kilometers C. 30 kilometers D. 37 kilometers
14. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The similarity of helium or hydrogen.
B. The reason for air pressure.
C The space balloon’s working principle.
D. The features of the buoyancy force.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Giant Space Balloons: A New Way for Space Tourism
B. Different Kinds of Spacecraft for Tourism
C. The Future of Rockets in Space Tourism
D. The Challenges of Space Tourism

Enhance Your Wellbeing in Nature
Nature reduces our anger, fear, and depression and increases our positive mood and psychological wellbeing.
Time in nature also brings us out of ourselves and our narrow concerns and connects us to a larger world where we
find beauty and interest. ___16___
It is clear that it is important to get outside! ___17___ But even if you live in an urban area, spend time in your
yard or find a park or a green space with trees and bushes. Go outside during your lunch hour if you can to get a
“breath of fresh air” and give your mind a break. ___18___
We all know the long list of physical, mental, and emotional benefits of exercise. Exercise improves attention
in the young and cognitive functioning in the old. It reduces stress and acts as an antidepressant. ___19___ But
much as we know all these benefits, we can’t always motivate ourselves to exercise regularly. This is where nature
can help. An appealing place to walk or bike can get us off our seats and moving. And once we start, the beauty of
natural surroundings keeps us motivated to continue.
___20___ A series of studies showed that walking in forests, as opposed to urban environments, lowered
blood pressure and stress hormones well beyond the time of the walk. So find somewhere with trees, bushes, wild
grasses or flowers, water, and other such natural elements and go for a walk or run or bike. Gardening is another
wonderful way to be active outside.
A. If you can get to the country, or a lake, that’s wonderful.
B. Exercise is also the key if we want to avoid gaining weight.
C. So find somewhere with trees or bushes to go for a walk.
D. The beauty of natural surroundings can keep us motivated.
E. Thus the environment is connected to our overall wellbeing.
F. You should find more energy for your afternoon mental tasks.

countryside, but also tons of water.

Dear boys and girls,
I’m glad to have the chance to make a speech here. Reading has the power to transform our life. It not only
enhances our mental growth but also enables us to keep up with the ever-changing world. Personally, I enjoy
reading novels. I encourage anyone who has little interest in reading to start with the life stories of scientists, which
can provide insights into their struggles and achievements, allowing you to learn how to handle difficult situations.
In conclusion, reading is not just a hobby, but a means to a better life. So, let’s make reading a regular part of
our life.
