To many foreigners, Chinese characters may seem like a random (任意的) mix of lines. But to Lena, a 20-year-old girl from Northern Virginia, US, each one tells its own story.
In her eyes, the character “kan” looks like a singing jellyfish, and the traditional form of “wu” lets her think of a sheep. Then, she tried to draw them as she saw them. To her surprise, after she posted the picture “wu” on Xiaohongshu, many loved it.
Lena started using Xiaohongshu months ago. Then, she noticed that many Chinese characters “stood out as looking like different objects”. Now, thanks to Lena’s drawings, more people are thinking about language, art and cross-cultural communication deeply.
Some people think that Lena seems to understand the beauty of Chinese characters even better than many Chinese people.
“It’s because you all are used to seeing the characters,” said Lena. She said that the opposite is also true. For example, she learned from her Chinese friends that the letters “orz” together look like a person kneeling (下跪) to say sorry. But it carries no meaning in English.
Lena’s story shows that language is more than just words. She also encourages Chinese learners to talk with native (母语的) speakers. “It’s more fun if you are teaching them your language and they’re teaching you theirs at the same time because then it’s more of a cultural exchange.”
59.Which of the following is the picture Lena drew for the character “wu”
A. B. C. D.

I didn’t know I had anxiety (焦虑) until the summer before grade 7. My family and I were shopping, and it was super crowded. Suddenly, my hands got wet, my heart raced and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I held it together until we got back to the car, then I broke down. Luckily, my older sister helped me calm down.
In high school, I had my worst panic (惊恐) attack during a drama class performance. I was nervous because the room was small, and I could see everyone’s faces. While performing, I made eye contact (接触) with someone, and I couldn’t think of anything. I forgot my lines and felt like everyone was looking at me. I cried and couldn’t breathe after I finished.
Even though I’ve had many panic attacks, I don’t let them take over my life. Now, I use my anxiety ring to help myself calm down. By moving it up and down my finger, I practice focusing on the ring and forgetting about my worries. Then I write down what’s troubling me. This makes me feel better. I also do breathing exercises. My friends and family support me a lot. They remind me to breathe and take breaks. I also talk to friends who share my feelings.
My advice to anyone with anxiety is to take it one day at a time. Things do get better, and I’m proof of that.
63.What might have caused the writer’s panic attack during the drama class
A.The difficult lines. B.Fear of the teacher. C.Others’ attention. D.The noisy classroom.

B.Stay true to yourself as you are who you are.
C.It is really terrible to suffer from panic attacks.
D.Things will improve if you face anxiety step by step.
Science and technology have become a big part of our lives. While they are very helpful, they can often bring some problems.
Recently, students at Shijiazhuang Foreign Language School in Hebei held a Science and Technology Festival. Using ideas from their daily lives, some students made safety alarms for e-bike riders. Others shared their knowledge about automated external defibrillators (AEDs) (自动体外除颤器).
One project that drew a lot of attention was the research on smart exercise equipment (设备). It was made by students from Class 3, Grade 8.
Smart exercise equipment is not only used in gyms. “Old people like doing exercise in parks, but sometimes they find it hard to use the equipment,” said student Liu Xinyi. “We wanted to know how people feel about it.”
The students visited many parks and collected about 1,000 questionnaires (问卷调查), both on paper and online. “I was very nervous at first,” said student Ran Haonan. “But when people told me about their problems, I felt a sense of responsibility and became more confident. People need to be heard.” The results showed that most people were open to trying the new equipment, but they needed some help either through voice or video instructions. Some also said that the resting areas were too small. “We’ll pass these findings to those who can make the exercise equipment better,” said Liu.

For many years, the Czech government had a plan to build a dam (水坝) in the Brdy area. They got the money for it, but they could not start because getting allowed to build was not easy. The project stopped for a long time. Then, a group of beavers (河狸) decided to help in their own way.
One cold morning in January, officials were surprised to find that eight beavers had already built a dam. The amazing thing was that the beavers built it almost in the same place the humans had planned. Because of this, the government saved about $1.2 million. Bohumil Fiser, the head of Brdy’s Protected Land Administration, said, “The beavers built the dam without any plans and for free.”
Officials can see a new small pond and wetland forming. Beavers make dams from rocks, wet earth, and wood. These dams are very important because they help stop floods, keep water in the ground, and provide homes for many animals. Since the new beaver dam appeared, animals like local frogs have returned. Thanks to the beavers’ work, nature is healing.
“Beaver wetlands are wonderful places for animals and plants,” said Fiser. “They make our land more natural and beautiful.” Humans need to be allowed to build, but beavers don’t-and this time, they finished the job perfectly.

七、任务型阅读
For as long as I can remember, there was a pickle jar (腌菜罐) in my parents’ bedroom. Every night, Dad would empty his pockets and drop his coins into the jar.
When the jar was full, Dad would sit at the kitchen table to prepare the coins for the bank. We put them in a small box between us in his old truck.
Every time we went to the bank, Dad would say, “Those coins are going to keep you out of the textile mill (纺织厂), son. You’re going to do better than me, my son.” After putting the coins into the bank account, we would celebrate with ice cream.
Dad showed me the coins in his hand after the clerk (柜员) gave him change. “When we get home, we’ll start filling the jar again,” he said happily. He always let me drop the first coins into the empty jar. “You’ll get to college with these coins,” he said.
Years later, I finished college and moved to another town for work. During a visit home, I noticed the pickle jar was gone. It had done its job. I realized how much Dad loved me and had taught me about hard work and hope.
My dad didn’t talk much and never gave me long speeches about trying hard or believing in myself. But the pickle jar taught me these qualities better than the flowery words ever could.

81.范文:
More Break Time, Better School Life
Hi, I’m Li Hui. I am very happy that our break time is now 15 minutes long. This change has made our school life better.
Before, the 10-minute break was too short and we felt rushed. Now we have more time to do different things. I can talk with my friends and go to the playground for fresh air. A short walk or some stretching helps me feel fresh for the next class.
I feel happier and more energetic during the day. The longer break helps me relax and think clearly, so I can listen better in class. I believe more break time really helps us enjoy a better school life.
