When a car factory closed in a small American town, many lost jobs. With gas prices hitting $4 per gallon and floods damaging homes, the town fell into despair. A church youth group decided to spread kindness through simple acts of giving.
The teenagers raised $1,700 from their church. They bought 25 gas cards and roses to give to strangers. Before starting, the group prayed to “find people needing hope”. Twenty-five teens then drove around town in a church van
High school students gave roses to people gardening or walking. Middle
schoolers stood at a gas station with free gas cards. Their rule was clear: “Wait until drivers start pumping gas before approaching.”
One moment touched everyone. Two 13-year-old boys noticed a young woman parked at a pump. She searched her purse and car desperately, then cried with her
head on the steering wheel. The boys, following instructions, knocked gently on her window.
“Here’s a free gas card,” they said. “God loves you.” The woman burst into
tears again. She explained she was a single mother heading to a crucial job interview. Her gas tank was empty, and she’d lost her last $10 bill. “I thought I’d miss my
chance to feed my kids, “she said.
The boys returned with more gas cards and flowers. Though she initially
refused, they insisted. “You’ve given me hope,” she said through tears. Later, the teens learned she got the job.
For 12 years, the group continues this tradition. “We always meet people who need love,” says a leader. The acts not only help receivers but teach teens the power of kindness. One participant said, “It shows how small actions can change lives.”

Have you wondered how your body knows when to wake up or why you need to go to the toilet less at night Circadian rhythms use the sun to help your body to run
on time.
“Circadian rhythms” is another name for body clocks. They are controlled by a small part of the brain called the hypothalamus (下丘脑) and they let the body know when to do things like eat, sleep and go to the toilet. Circadian rhythms repeat every 24 hours and almost every living thing has them. They tell animals the best time to
hunt, for example, and plants when to flower. Circadian rhythms are influenced by light. When the sun shines through the window in the morning your body clock tells you it’s time to wake up. When it’s dark your body feels sleepy.
Good-quality sleep lets your brain recharge and replace important hormones (荷尔蒙) to keep you healthy. Not listening to your body clock, such as going to bed late, can mess with your sleep cycle and make you feel tired and easy to get angry the next day. Circadian rhythms also affect energy, digestion (消化) and body temperature. In fact, scientists have found that they help our whole body run smoothly. Swathi
Yadlapalli is a scientist who studies how people grow and develop. She says, “Almost every part in the human body has a circadian clock.”
Circadian rhythms are written into people’s genes (基因), which are the body's instructions for how to develop and grow. We can’t change them but we can listen to what they are telling us. The Sleep Charity, which helps people to sleep better,
recommends sticking to regular sleep patterns. So whether you are used to staying up late, or getting up early, try going to bed and getting up at the same time every day. It also suggests getting lots of natural light in the morning. Even if the sky is cloudy and
grey, the natural light can reset your body clock and make you feel more awake.
28 .Which part of the brain controls circadian rhythms
A.The hormone system. B.The hypothalamus. C.The digestive
system. D .The gene center.
29 .What is the function of circadian rhythms
A .They help plants get sunlight more easily.
B .They regulate the hypothalamus to work faster.
C .They control the movement of main parts in the body.
D .They tell living things when to perform certain activities.
30 .What can be inferred about natural light
A .It makes people feel sleepy at night.
B .It has no effect on hormone production.
C .It sometimes influences circadian rhythms greatly.
D .It helps reset the body clock even on cloudy days.
31 .What does the author suggest doing
A .Stopping staying up too late. B .Getting up early the next day.
C .Having a fixed sleep routine daily. D .Listening to music before sleeping.

From an airplane, cars crawling down the highway look like ants. But actual
ants — unlike cars — somehow manage to avoid the stop-and-go traffic. Researchers are studying their cooperative strategies to learn how to program self-driving cars that don’t jam up.
The free flow of traffic becomes unstable as the density(密度)of cars increases on a highway. At15 vehicles per mile per lane, one driver applying his brake can
cause a wave of congestion(拥挤). “It’ s a kind of phase transition(相变),” like water turning from a liquid to a solid form, says Katsuhiro Nishinari, a mathematical
physicist.
His previous research had shown that ants can maintain their flow even at high densities. So what’s their secret In a recent study, researchers found that the ants
travel in groups of three to twenty that move at nearly constant speeds while keeping distances between one another — and they don’t speed up to pass others.
Human drivers at rush hour rarely follow such rules. “We’ re maximizing the
interests of individuals, which is why, at a given point, you start to have a traffic jam,” says study co-author Nicola Pugno. But self-driving cars, if they one day become
popular, would share information with nearby cars to make good use of traffic flow — perhaps, the researchers suggest, by prioritizing(优先考虑)constant speeds or by not passing others on the road.
Ants can do numerous things that self-driving can’t, Pinter Wollman points out. Ants can create a trail as wide as they like, unlike drivers stuck on highways. The
insects do sometimes jam up when trapped in tunnels, but to keep things moving,
“they’ ll find a way to walk on the ceiling,” she says. Plus, ants don’t crash; they can literally walk over one another.
Today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants, Nishinari says, “by leaving room between their car and the one ahead, drivers can absorb a wave of braking in dense traffic conditions that would otherwise be amplified(增强)into a traffic jam.”
32 .What enables ants to keep smooth traffic flow even at high densities
A .Central command system. B .Cooperative group interaction.
C .Quick speeding-up ability. D .Advanced navigation (导航) tools.
33 .How could self-driving cars potentially copy ants’ traffic strategies
A .Road expansion. B .Complete avoidance of braking.
C .Inter-vehicle data sharing networks. D .Prioritizing top speed achievement.
34 .In which aspect are ants different from self-driving cars
A .Travelling in groups of 3 to 20. B .Traffic rule observation.
C.Computer-controlled decision making. D.Flexible navigation and crash avoidance.
35 .What would be the most appropriate title for the text
A .The Psychology Behind Human Traffic Congestion.
B .Technical Barriers in Autonomous Vehicle Networks.

One sunny afternoon, 8-year-old Leo was running after a colorful butterfly
around the neighborhood. He laughed as he ran faster, his eyes fixed on the moving wings. He was so caught up in the game that he didn’t notice where he was going.
Near the neighbor’s yard, he tripped over a small stone and crashed right into Mrs.
Lee’s potted sunflowers — her favorite ones.
The pot broke into pieces, and soil spread all over the path. Leo froze, his
laughter gone in a second. Mrs. Lee was always so nice to him — she’d even given him a tiny sunflower plant last spring. He knelt down and tried to put the flowers and soil back into the broken pot, but only made it worse and got his hands all dirty.
He was so scared he’d ruined her hard work that he stepped back, his heart
beating fast. He looked at her door, half hoping she hadn’t seen it and half wishing
she would come out so he could say sorry right away. However, scared of what Mrs. Lee might say, he turned and ran home as fast as he could. When he pushed open the door, he didn’t even take off his shoes — he just ran to his room and sat on the bed, hands covering his face.
After a few minutes, his mom Clara knocked softly on his door. “Leo You’re home early, and you ran in so fast. Are you okay ” She eased the door open and saw him sitting with his head down. She walked over and sat next to him, putting a hand on his back. “You look upset. What’s wrong, sweetie ” she asked.
Leo took a deep breath and then told his mom what had happened with tears in his eyes. His mom hugged him gently and said, “It’s okay to make mistakes, but we
need to take responsibility.” She took out a new pot and some fresh soil, and then held Leo’s hand. “Let’s go and say sorry and fix it together.”

M: Grandma Moses is among the most well-known 20th century painters of the United States, yet she had hardly started painting before she was in her late seventies.
She was born on a farm in New York, one of five boys and five girls. At 12, she left home and worked as a housekeeper until she married Thomas Moses at 27. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York. Grandma Moses began to paint using oils in her old age because she wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local
drugstore and at a market, and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought everything she
painted. Three of those pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940, she
had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930s and her death, she produced some 1,600 pictures.

Ants can create a trail as wide as they like, unlike drivers stuck on highways. The insects do sometimes jam up when trapped in tunnels, but to keep things
moving, ‘they’ll find a way to walk on the ceiling,’ she says. Plus, ants don’t crash; they can
根据第一段中“Researchers are studying their cooperative strategies to learn how to program self-driving cars that don’t jam up.(研究人员正在研究它们的协作策略,以探索如何为自动驾驶汽车编写程序,避免交通拥堵。)”以及文章整体内容,尤其是最后一段中引述的观点“Today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants, Nishinari says, ‘by leaving room between their car and the one ahead, drivers can absorb a wave of braking in dense traffic
conditions that would otherwise be amplified into a traffic jam.’( Nishinari 指出,如今的司机至少能从蚂蚁身上学到一点:‘在车与前方车辆之间留出空间,司机便能在密集车流中缓冲刹车波,否则这种波动会加剧为交通拥堵。’)”
