The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the oldest, largest outdoor art festivals in the US. The festival started in March 1960 as a community project to bring local artists and art lovers together. It’s produced by an all-volunteer board and draws up to 250,000 visitors each year. Merchandise (商品)
The festival T-shirts and other memorabilia (纪念品) are available at three merchandise sales tents. The tents are located at Park and New England avenues, Park and Morse Boulevard avenues, and Park and Garfield avenues. Posters will also be sold at the three merchandise tents, while a vintage (复古的) poster & goods tent will be located next to the festival headquarters.
Children’s Workshop
Girls and boys can create their own artwork at Children’s Workshop. Local art centers and museums feature a variety of fun, hands-on art activities for children. There is no charge for participation, and all young artists are welcome to keep their creations.

In 2021, my 68-year-old mother was diagnosed (诊断) with Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默病). By January 2023, she’d lost her ability to complete everyday tasks. She was set on staying in her home and resisted the in-home care. I guessed it was because of what it represented: the acceptance of a disease that would slowly rob her of her memories and the ability to take care of herself.
We had to make the hard choice of finding her a nursing home for her safety and well-being. But we knew she wouldn’t be interested. So, we made up an excuse, telling her that it was an opportunity to spend the winter near my brother in sunny Florida while living at an apartment we had arranged for her.
My mum wasn’t the soft, affectionate mother I often longed for. She had never shown or talked about her feelings, but she was a great example of a hard-working, independent, entrepreneurial woman. My brother and I both have our own businesses, which is something she showed us was possible.
Since her diagnosis, watching her battle with accepting what was happening to her was heartbreaking, but I also felt closer to her when she began to express and share her feelings with me like a kid.
My brother arrived to meet us and we were shown to her apartment. A small kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, and two bedrooms — one for her, and one for me and my brother to stay in when we visited. She seemed happy during moving in. For the next 10 days, I lived with her there. We went to meals together, reviewed the activity schedule, and I dropped her off and picked her up like a child at school.
The day came when I had to fly home, and I cried. As I shifted from being her daughter to being more like her parent, I realized how hard being a mother can be.

Microplastics are everywhere. They have been found on the top of Mount Qomolangma and in creatures living the deepest sea. They’re in bottled water, and even in human body. This tiny plastics choke wildlife, disrupt ecosystems, and threaten human health, and they are extremely difficult to remove. Microplastics are tiny plastic pieces smaller than 5 millimeters. They come from everything from tires (轮胎), which are then broken down into smaller pieces, to beautiful decorations.
The planet is under great threat from microplastics, and water ecosystems are the first to suffer. One study from 2020 estimated there were 14 million metric tons of microplastics sitting on the ocean floor. Scientists have called microplastics one of this generation’s key environmental challenges. The pollution is only set to get worse with plastic production and pollution expected to increase in the coming years. Even under a variety of tactics, including plastic product reduction, waste management, and environmental recycling, microplastic pollution is still worsening.
Luckily, scientists in China have come up with a possible solution. A research team from Wuhan University used two organic compounds(有机化合物) from cotton and squid (鱿鱼) bones—known for removing pollution from wastewater — to create a biodegradable sponge (可生物降解的海绵). The sponge was able to absorb microplastics both by physically catching them and through electromagnetic attraction. They tested the sponge in four different water samples, and found it removed up to 99.9% of microplastics.
Previous methods for absorbing plastics tend to be expensive and difficult to make. The low cost and wide availability of both cotton and squid bones mean the sponge holds great potential to be used in absorbing microplastic from complex water bodies.
Shima Ziajahromi, a lecturer at Australia’s Griffith University who studies microplastics, called the squid-cotton-sponge method “promising” and said it could be an effective way to clean up the high risk and weak water ecosystem.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly common for medical exams. The next time you get a body scan, there’s a good chance that AI might be analyzing the images.
A few years ago, four clinics in Poland tried out an AI system to discover polyps (息肉) and other conditions during colonoscopies (结肠镜检查). The AI works in real time, analyzing video from a camera inside the colon. If it spots something, it will highlight the area for the doctor to see. “In this particular one there’s a green box, showing where the polyp might be,” said Marcin Romanczyk, a gastroenterologist (胃肠病学家) at H-T Medical Center in Tychy, Poland, who led the study.
The clinics were collecting data on whether the AI system worked. It turns out it did, but when Romanczyk and his colleagues reanalyzed the data, they found something else: After they’d grown used to using an AI-assisted system, doctors became significantly worse at discovering possible polyps when the AI was switched off, discovery rates of possible polyps falling from 28.4% to 22.4%.
Romanczyk says he’s not quite sure why it’s happening, but he has some theories. “We are subconsciously (潜意识地) waiting for the green box to come out to show us where the polyp is and we’re not paying so much attention,” he says. In other words, the doctors seemed to become quickly dependent on AI systems catching the polyps. The doctors appeared to behave worse at spotting polyps and other conditions during colonoscopies on their own.
As for doctors’ losing critical skills because of AI, Johan Hulleman, a researcher who studies human reliance on AI, argued, “I think three months seems like a very short period to lose a skill that you took 26 years to build up.” He believes statistical variations (统计变异) due to a number of factors such as age of the patients might be behind the drop.
