Birds are some of the most remarkable creatures on Earth, with unique
characteristics and behaviors that make them a joy to observe. Here’s an introduction to four fascinating bird species, each with its own distinctive features.
Bald Eagles, the U.S. national symbol, are impressive birds with 80-inch-wide wings. Once endangered, they’ve made a great comeback thanks to protection laws.
试卷第 3 页,共 15 页
These birds hunt fish, diving down at up to 100 mph, and build large nests called aeries high in trees. Young eagles turn from gray to brown before developing the well-known white head and tail at 4 to 5 years old.
American Crows are large, 17.5-inch-long birds with shiny black feathers (羽毛) and brown eyes. Found from southern Canada to the U. S., they are highly
intelligent and live in family groups. They feed on a wide range of food, including insects, small animals, fruits, and nuts, and often come together in huge numbers when winter arrives. Their loud “caw” makes them easy to identify.
The American Goldfinches are small birds, around 5 inches long, living in the edges of forests, plains, backyards, and parks across North America. Males display
bright yellow feathers in warm months, while both male and female birds turn
brownish in winter. These birds feed mainly on sunflower and thistle seeds, and their “po-ta-to-chip” call is a familiar sound as they communicate with their groups.
Blue-Footed Boobies stand out with their bright blue feet, which males show off to attract mates. These 32-34-inch-long seabirds dive up to 55 mph to catch small fish. Active during the day, they sleep on land and gather in large numbers, with
parents caring for chicks until they’re two months old.
1 .How long are American Crows
A .Around 5 inches. B .17.5 inches.
C .20 inches. D .32 - 34 inches.
2 .What color are male American Goldfinches’ feathers in warm months

Richard Parks’ greatest challenge occurred long before he ever climbed a
mountain. In 2009, the Welsh professional rugby player saw his career suddenly cut
short by injury and subsequent surgery. “It was heartbreaking,” he recalls. “I had been

Richard Parks the Rugby Player. If I wasn’t that person, who was I ”
After weeks of low spirits, he found inspiration in a meaningful line that read, “The horizon (地平线) is only the limit of our sight,” and in the life story of polar explorer Ranulph Fiennes. He set an ambitious new goal: to climb the highest
mountain on each of the seven continents. “I needed a physical, emotional and cognitive challenge,” he says.
Driven and determined, Parks made a remarkable recovery. Only two years after his injury, in 2011, he became the fastest person to complete the Explorer’s Grand
Slam — climbing the highest mountain on each of the seven continents and reaching both Poles in just 7 months. In 2014, he earned another Guinness World Record as the first person of color to ski solo, unsupported and unassisted, to the South Pole. He
now holds four world records and views each expedition (探险) as a form of treatment. “I needed to gain control back in my life,” he reflects.
Recently, Parks guided actor Will Smith across Antarctica for the National
Geographic series Pole to Pole. In extreme cold and unpredictable conditions, he
helped Smith experience the raw challenge of polar adventure, “Smith just grew
through everything we threw at him,” Parks says. Smith even became one of the few people ever to ski to the South Pole.
Parks credits his parents for his ability to bounce back. Though not athletes,
they taught him the value of stepping outside comfort zones. Today, as a filmmaker, author and father, he believes in making adventure accessible so others can “see
themselves in it.”
His next mission will follow Matthew Henson’s 1909 journey to the North Pole, documented in the film Whiteout. For Parks, exploration remains a path to growth and connection. “I often say that mountains saved my life,” he admits. “The end of my
rugby career felt like the end of me — but it also led to the best things that ever happened.”
4 .What inspired Parks after his rugby career ended

Winter, with its shorter days and longer nights, naturally invites us to slow down, seek comfort, and adopt a gentler rhythm in our daily lives. Interestingly, adjusting our eating patterns — specifically, having dinner earlier during these months — can contribute significantly to our physical and mental well-being.
According to health insights from sources such as The Conversation and The
Jerusalem Post, shifting your last meal to an earlier time in winter can offer multiple benefits, from supporting metabolism (新陈代谢) to lifting mood.
This idea is rooted in our body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm. This natural cycle is closely tied to sunlight exposure, regulating hormones (激素),
sleep, and digestion. In winter, daylight diminishes earlier, signaling the body to begin slowing down its functions sooner. Eating late in the evening can conflict with this
rhythm, potentially upsetting metabolic processes. By finishing dinner earlier —
ideally between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm, or at least before 8:00 pm — you allow your body time to digest food before sleep. This practice can help maintain healthier blood sugar levels and improve sleep quality, leading to deeper, more restorative sleep and improved overnight recovery.
Furthermore, regular late-night eating has been linked to risks such as weight
试卷第 6 页,共 15 页
gain and metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes. An earlier dinner helps the
body process nutrients more efficiently and reduces the likelihood of metabolic stress. For individuals with busy schedules, a strict early dinner may not always be possible; however, aiming to eat between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm offers a flexible and still
beneficial option.
Mood regulation is another important aspect. Reduced sunlight in winter can lower serotonin levels — a key hormone that helps stabilize mood. Eating earlier,
combined with regular physical activity, supports better energy regulation and may help ease seasonal low mood. Additionally, keeping a consistent eating window and timing meals around exercise can enhance overall daily rhythm and promote a sense of routine, which is especially valuable during the darker, quieter winter months.
8 .What does the underlined word “diminishes” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A .Dies down. B .Grows stronger.
C .Comes up. D .Stays stable.
9 .What time is recommended for busy people to have dinner
A .5:00 pm—7:00 pm. B .6:00 pm—8:00 pm.
C .Before 5:00 pm. D .After 8:00 pm.
10 .What can be concluded about consistent late-night eating
A .It benefits metabolic processes. B .It is acceptable for busy people.
C.It helps regulate circadian rhythm. D.It may harm physical and mental health.
11 .What is the best title for the text
A .Why Winter Habits Improve Sleep Quality. B .How You Can Adapt to Winter’s Shorter Days.
C.Why You Should Eat Dinner Earlier in Winter. D.How Circadian Rhythm Affects Eating Times.

Universal Music Group (UMG) has partnered with music production platform Splice to jointly explore the next generation of AI-powered music creation tools for musical artists.
试卷第 7 页,共 15 页
Under the new partnership, UMG and Splice will develop “commercial (商业
的) AI tools” and “AI-powered virtual instruments” that are rooted in creative control, sound excellence and respect for intellectual (知识) property. The agreement also
builds on Splice’s expanding collection of AI-enabled tools — including Create — which already integrate into many producers’ day-to-day workflows.
According to the companies, this partnership is guided by a shared commitment to creative expression and artistic empowerment. As part of that vision, UMG and
Splice will explore tools that allow artists on UMG’s artist list to bring their own sounds directly into Splice’s AI workflows, with those artists expected to play a crucial role in shaping how the products are developed.
Michael Nash, UMG Chief Digital Officer, says, “We’re excited to form this
partnership with Splice to promote the harmony of innovation and ethicality (道德) in addressing the interests ofthe creative community to leverage cutting-edge
AI-enabled tools to further their artistic expression. We look forward to partnering with Splice on this critically important strategic technology front.”
Splice CEO Kakul Srivastava says, “We’ve spent time building AI tools
designed to fairly compensate creators and keep them in control. We’re thankful for
UMG’s continued support, and excited to work together to put these commercial tools in the hands of artists everywhere, knowing they can trust the end result.”
The partnership builds on groundwork Splice has already laid. Over the past year, the company has rolled out deeper digital audio (音频) workstation (DAW)
integrations with platforms like Ableton Live and Pro Tools, expanded its AI-native tools, and — with the acquisition of Spitfire Audio — strengthened its presence
among professional composers, further solidifying its position as a trusted music creation platform.
It also follows Splice’s earlier collaboration with UMG and other industry
players on the Principles for Music Creation with AI, a series of clarifying statements on the responsible use of AI in music creation, advocating for ethical AI that
empowers human creators rather than replacing them.

Meaningful words can deeply affect the relationship between parents and their adult children. As both generations grow, open communication, mutual respect, and
understanding become essential to building a healthy connection. Experts suggest that simple yet thoughtful phrases can offer comfort, recognition, and stronger emotional bonds.
· “I support your life path.”
Parents often imagine a certain future for their children. 16 — whether in career, relationships, or lifestyle — it builds trust and confidence. This phrase tells adult children that their decisions are respected, not judged.
· “I am here for you.”
Sometimes, adult children don’t need solutions. They just need someone to listen. Saying “I am here for you” and then truly listening without interrupting or fixing things can mean more than advice. 17 .
试卷第 9 页,共 15 页
· “I am sorry.”
Many adult children hope to hear this from their parents. An honest apology for past actions or unmet emotional needs can be powerful. 18 . Explaining past struggles — like financial stress, mental health issues, or family conflicts — can help adult children understand the full picture and begin to heal.
· “ 19 ”
This question prevents misunderstandings. Instead of assuming what an adult child needs during tough times, asking directly shows care and respect. It gives them control over the conversation and makes them feel valued.
20 . When used with sincerity, they can strengthen family ties, encourage honesty, and create a safe space for both parents and adult children to grow together.
A .Presence and patience show love in a quiet but strong way

The annoying, on-and-off beeping (哔哔声) of the smoke detector woke us up at 4:00 am. My husband George, 65, insisted on changing the battery by himself,
brushing off my concerns about the 10-foot-high attic (阁楼). “Piece of cake,” he said with a know-it-all smile. Even though I thought it was a bad idea, I held the ladder as he climbed up into the narrow door of the attic. He replaced the battery quickly, and I sighed with relief — until he tried to climb down.
When George tried to swing his leg over the edge of the attic opening to get
back to the ladder, he missed the rungs (横档) of the top step. I told him to shift left
and right to reach them, but he only ended up lying flat right at the attic entrance, one arm hanging over the edge, stuck and unable to move. The confidence he’d had earlier turned into frustration, and I felt panic rising inside me. I didn’t want to bother the
neighbors — it was the middle of the night, too late to wake anyone up, and they
probably wouldn’t know how to get him down safely anyway — so I had no choice

but to call the local fire department.
I waited anxiously, my eyes fixed on George, not daring to leave him alone. Ten minutes later, a large red fire-rescue truck pulled up. Three firefighters — Brandon,
Jonathan, and Marty — stepped out, maintaining their professionalism as they
approached the house. I hurried to let them in and quickly explained the situation.
The firefighters quickly assessed the situation. They looked up at George right at the attic entrance, then checked our household ladder and shook their heads — it wasn’t stable enough for a safe rescue. After a brief exchange, they decided to use
their professional equipment to avoid any accidents. Hearing their plan, George sighed in relief, knowing he was in capable hands.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右;

Hope you’re doing well. I’m writing to share a meaningful experience with you. Over the past several months, I have made weekly observations of a rose in the park near my home,

This experience taught me so much. Not only did I learn about the rose’s growth cycle, but I also cultivated patience and attentiveness. Moreover, these weekly moments in nature relaxed
me and helped relieve the pressure of my studies.
Have you ever had a similar experience Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,

47 .One possible version:
Jonathan and Brandon got a stronger ladder from their vehicle. This ladder, designed
specifically for rescue operations, was far more stable than our household one. They positioned it firmly beneath the attic opening, each securing one side of the base. Marty, the most experienced of them, climbed up alone, pausing at a safe distance below George. “Take it easy, sir. I’ll get you down,” he said reassuringly, reaching up to grasp George’s wrist. He guided George to sit up
slowly, then helped him swing his legs over the edge one by one and plant his feet securely on the rungs.
With Marty’s steady guidance, the two climbed down step by step. Once on the floor,
George leaned against the wall for a moment to regain his composure, his face still flushed but filled with gratitude. He shook each firefighter’s hand warmly, repeating his thanks. “I can’t
believe I got myself into this mess — thank you for coming so quickly and getting me down
