I soon found that my mother’s words were true. A sailor’s life is indeed a hard life. There was no time for play on board and even in the fairest weather there was much work to be done.
On the very first night the wind began to blow. The waves rolled high. The ship was tossed (颠簸) this way and that. Never had I seen such a storm.
All night long the wind blew. I was so frightened that I thought the ship would surely go to the bottom. Then I remembered my pleasant home and the words of my kind mother. “If I live to reach dry land,” I said to myself, “I will abandon this thought of being a sailor. I will never set my foot in another ship.”
Day came. The storm was worse than before. I felt sure that we were lost. But towards evening the sky began to clear. The wind died away. The waves went down. The storm was over.
The next morning as I stood looking out over the beautiful smooth sea, the first mate came up. “Well, Bob,” he said, “Were you frightened by that little gale (大风) ”
“A little gale ” I said. “Indeed, it was a terrible storm.”
“Do you call that a storm ” he laughed. “Why, it was nothing at all. You are only a fresh-water sailor, Bob. Wait till we have a real storm.”
And so, I soon forgot my fears. Little by little, I gave up all thoughts of going home again. “A sailor’s life for me,” I said.
My first voyage (航海) was not a long one. I visited no new lands, for the ship went only to London. But the things which I saw in that city seemed very wonderful to me.

With their cute “smiles” and photo-ready poses, quokkas (短尾矮袋鼠) are often called the “world’s happiest animals”. But are they really as happy as they seem
Found in Western Australia, quokkas are about the size of a small cat and look like a smaller, rounder type of their cousin, the kangaroo. They have small faces with large eyes and round ears, and they are famous for looking like they’ re always smiling.
While the quokkas’ “smile” is just a result of the shape of their mouths, they do have a friendly nature. They are not afraid of people, making it easy for visitors to take pictures with them.
Taking quokka selfies (自拍照) has become a popular tourist activity on Rottnest Island, home to the world’s largest quokka population.
Hundreds of thousands of quokka selfies have been shared on the Internet. Although these animals are doing well online, it’s a different story in the wild. Quokkas are listed as vulnerable (易受伤害的) by the Western Australian Threatened Species Scientific Committee (委员会).
Today, there are thought to be around 10, 000 quokkas living on Rottnest Island, with a few smaller populations living on mainland Western Australia. Reports show that quokka populations have been going down because of predators (捕食者) and the reduction of their living places.
For those visiting Rottnest Island, there are rules in place to help protect the quokka population. Visitors can’t feed or touch the quokkas, or they may pay fines of up to about $7,000.

More and more young people in China are turning to guzi. Their spending on guzi is even benefiting the country’s economy (经济). Guzi sounds like the English word “goods”. It means “grain” in Chinese. They want to find new ways to form relationships. Guzi culture is taking advantage of this. Guzi stores offer real-life spaces for young people to meet people with similar interests. Dear Allan,
My name is Xiaojing. In junior high school I passed, I made good progress in English with the help of my teacher. Now, I’m excited about going to senior high school in September.
Yesterday, my elder sister said to me, “You ought to memorize more new words during the summer vacation because you will find there is a large vocabulary in a single text when you study in senior high school. Besides, grammatical rules will be more confusing (令人困惑的).”
I love English. I do hope to keep my interest and become a better English learner. Could you please give me some advice
Eager Xiaojing
Dear Xiaojing.
Glad to know that you love English. It matters. Don’t worry too much about new words and confusing grammatical rules.
For vocabulary learning, my suggestion is to understand and remember new words and expressions in context (上下文). As for grammar learning, you need to understand the building blocks of grammar. They lead up to more complex (复杂的) forms. With enough time, effort and practice, you will not feel confused with grammar any more and finally get a better understanding of it.
From your mail, I know that you’re interested in English and you want to keep your interest in learning it. Here are a few tips for you.
Listening to English songs is a good way. It can not only help to keep your interest in learning English, but also improve your listening skills. In addition, English songs can also be used to practise your pronunciation.
Watching movies, especially animated (动画的) ones, is another interesting way because of their simple dialogues. Moreover, animated movies are usually filled with body language and facial expressions. They can make the dialogues much more understandable.
Just make sure you spend enough time on the language happily. That is the key to success.
Allan
