For Li Donglin, an 18-year-old senior high school student, this past summer was all about
cultural relic sites. He joined the cultural relics census (普查) team in Huanghua, Hebei, becoming its youngest member. This census is part of the fourth national cultural relics census, which started in November 2023 and is set to end by June 2026. Its goal is to record and get a deep
understanding of the conditions of immovable cultural heritage sites, including ancient sites and tombs across the country.
Li’s love for cultural relics began at an early age. Since childhood, he has enjoyed
collecting things and now has over 100 cultural artifacts (手工艺品). Li also has repaired many artifacts, improving this skill by learning from all kinds of sources.
Despite his strong connection to ancient artifacts, this was his first time taking part in a
cultural relics census. “I thought at first that the census was just about visiting sites and doing a
simple investigation,” Li told Teens. However, the census work turned out to be quite opposite. In the investigation of cultural relics, measuring areas is a major task. To provide a better description of the ancient village site in Changguo Town in Huanghua, the team had to walk a long way to
work out the site’s boundaries (边界). In the hot summer sun, Li made his way through overgrown corn fields to identify the boundaries in all directions, often walking up to 30,000 steps per day.
During these walks, he also needed to do some digging. “After digging, we examined the soil to find any signs of cultural relics,” Li said. “This step is key to making sure we get the
boundaries right and don’t miss any relics.” Then, the team used special tools to work out the site’s total area.
“It is hard work, but being able to describe each site so that each site receives the most protection makes us very happy,” Li said.
4 .What is the purpose of the national cultural relics census
A .To build a national register of cultural relics.
B .To promote tourism in historical sites nationwide.
C .To train young students in simple investigation skills.
D .To identify the most valuable historical sites nationwide.

Did you know that long ago, Singapore was full of wetlands, lakes, and small villages
Even today, animals like wild pigs, monkeys, and snakes sometimes enter cities looking for food and shelter. This can be dangerous for them, especially on busy roads.
Singapore wants to become a “City in Nature” by 2030. The city is finding ways to protect natural spaces. Scientists are creating solutions to help wildlife live safely alongside people.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is key to these ideas.
Animals often cross highways and risk being hit by cars. Experts use technology like
cameras and sound devices to study animal movement and decide where to build safe crossings. In 2019, the Mandai Wildlife Group (MWG) built a 140-meter-long bridge over a highway just for
animals. Cameras showed that over 100 species used it. MWG also built fences to guide animals and rope bridges to help those living in trees move safely.
Singapore is also teaching communities how to keep animals safe. The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) receives over 1,000 calls each month to rescue wild animals in cities. “Often, we teach people how to handle the situation themselves,” said Karina Lim from ACRES. “This helps them feel more confident and respect animals more.” Wildlife expert Kiran Sujanani added, “Wild animals are usually shy and scared. If we give them space, they will often leave on their own.”
To live together peacefully, people need to understand why animals come near them and
how they behave. Animal welfare groups advise people to do their part to avoid attracting wildlife
试卷第 6 页,共 13 页
to their homes. This includes not carrying visible plastic bags in areas with monkeys and storing waste properly. Education is the first step toward change. As one expert said, “Harmony begins with respect.” By learning about animals and respecting their homes, everyone can help protect them. Singapore’s journey shows that with community effort and STEM, people and wildlife can share spaces peacefully.
8 .How is STEM primarily used to protect wildlife in Singapore
A .By building more roads and bridges.
B .By planning more natural parks for animals.
C .By using cameras and devices to frighten animals.
D .By researching animals and creating secure passages.
9 .What can be inferred about ACRES’s work from the text
A .It wants to move all wild animals out of the city.
B .It encourages people to keep wild animals as pets.
C .It mainly focuses on finding new homes for wild animals.
D .It believes people should learn to deal with wildlife properly.
10 .What is one suggested way to avoid attracting wildlife to residential areas
A .Making loud noises to scare animals away.
B .Feeding animals regularly to keep them calm.
C .Storing waste properly and keeping plastic bags out of sight.
D .Building higher fences and setting barriers around homes.
11 .What is the main purpose of the passage
A .To discuss the dangers wild animals face in cities.
B .To explain how STEM helps humans and wildlife coexist.
C .To encourage readers to visit the natural parks in Singapore.
D .To introduce the history of wildlife conservation in Singapore.

As new technologies, including AI, are becoming popular, they promise to change learning for the better.
Already, there are AI-based tutoring (辅导) tools that can help learners. One 2024 study,
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
led by the University of Oxford, found that school students in Ghana who used an AI-powered maths tutor through WhatsApp for half an hour, twice a week, over eight months had “higher”
maths progress scores than those in a control group.
“Until now, professional, personalised tutoring has been too expensive for people,” points out Joseph South, chief innovation officer at the International Society for Technology in
Education. “AI-powered tutors can offer this experience for online learners at a low price.”
However, there are still possible problems to solve. AI can present untrue things as fact,
which could mean students might “learn” incorrect information. Similarly, AI can develop biases (偏见) based on the data (数据) used to train it, and possibly pass them on to learners. In addition, experts warn that any educational institution (机构) needs to have strict rules on what student
personal information can be put into AI tools, to reduce privacy risks.
But, to some, the biggest risk is to the learning process. “As students increasingly depend
on AI tools, they may use them as quick answers, which will hurt their ability to learn basic
learning skills,” says Emily Deleu, assistant teaching professor of business management
communication at Carnegie Mellon University. “Is that good for them in the long term ” she asks. “This is still an open question.”
To protect students, she suggests “we need government rules to give advice to schools.”
And she adds, “The biggest risk of all with AI is doing nothing. The world has changed and is changing. We should change how we teach and what we teach to welcome AI.”
12 .What does the 2024 study show about AI-powered tutoring tools
A .They can help develop students’ interest in maths.
B .They can increase competition among students.
C .They can help students improve their grades.
D .They can shorten students’ study time.
13 .What does Joseph South think of AI-powered tutoring tools
A .They will reduce the need for teachers in online learning.
B .They can make personalised tutoring affordable for most people.
C .They will pass some biases on to learners.
D .They may present fiction as fact.
14 .What do experts want educational institutions to do
试卷第 8 页,共 13 页
A .Bring in more professional teachers.
B .Develop more AI-powered tutoring tools.
C .Help students develop their own opinions.
D .Try to protect students’ private information.
15 .Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A .Will AI Change Education for the Better
B .Can AI Help Students Learn Important Skills
C .Are AI Tools Expensive for Learners
D .What Can AI Tools Help Teachers Do

Human beings are smart. However, it seems that people are gradually losing their smartness
试卷第 12 页,共 13 页
as smartphones become more and more important assistants in their lives, reported news website Record Japan on Oct. 22. As we rely too much on technology instead of our brains, many people have lost three basic abilities, said the website.
The first skill many people have lost is remembering phone numbers. Because phone
numbers are stored in smart phone contacts, there's no need to dial a number or look at it again.
And some people may also have lost their sense of direction because navigation apps can guide
people anywhere they want to go. These apps can even find shortest routes for you and avoid
traffic jams. But the worst lost skills may be social ones, meaning that some people are becoming socially inept(无能的). People often bury themselves in their smart phones. As we're too addicted to what's happening in the virtual world, some of us have lost conversational skills and sometimes can't even tell whether a person is happy or not.
In August, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, studied 51 students
aged 11 and 12 who had over five hours' screen time every day. Their task was to tell the emotions of 48 pictures of faces that were happy, sad, angry or scared. The children made an average of
14.02 mistakes at the beginning. But after a five-day camp without electronic (电子的) products, they made only 9.41 mistakes on average. “If you’re not practicing face-to-face communication, you could be losing important social skills,” concluded professor Yalda Uhls from the research.
Luckily, people still have a chance to get these abilities back. You should try to keep your parents' numbers in mind for emergencies. You should also pay more attention to street signs and stores, which will help you to draw a mind map and stop you from getting lost. And the easiest
solution to social skill loss is to take a break from electronic devices because we are social creatures. We need device-free time.
