基础篇：The Warm Blanket
Lily lives with her grandma in a small village. Winter comes, and the wind is cold. Grandma’s old blanket is thin. Lily wants to make a new one for her. She saves her pocket money for months. She buys soft wool and learns to knit from Mrs. Lee next door. It is hard work, but Lily never stops. On Christmas Eve, she gives the blanket to grandma. Grandma wraps it around her and hugs Lily tightly. “This is the warmest blanket I’ve ever had,” grandma says. Lily feels warm in her heart, too. She knows love can keep people warm even in the coldest winter.

The Browns live in a small house. Mr. Brown is a postman, and Mrs. Brown works in a bookstore. They have two children, Mike and Emma. The family doesn’t have much money, but they are always happy.
Every Sunday, they have a “Family Game Night”. They play board games and tell stories. Mike likes to play chess with his dad. Emma draws pictures and shows them to her mom. Sometimes, they cook together. Mrs. Brown makes pancakes, and the kids add fruit on top. They laugh and talk, forgetting about their small house and simple life.
One day, Mr. Brown loses his job. The family is worried, but they don’t give up. Mike sells his old toys to get some money. Emma helps Mrs. Brown in the bookstore after school. Mr. Brown looks for a new job every day. After a month, he finds a new job as a delivery man. The family has a big dinner to celebrate.
Mike says, “I thought we would be sad, but we’re still happy.” Mrs. Brown smiles and says, “Because we have each other. Love is the most important thing.” The Browns know that true happiness comes from family love, not money or things.

In the summer time, this wasn't too bad, but in the winter, freezing cold draughts blew across the floor all night long, and it was awful. There wasn't any question of them being able to buy a better house or even one more bed to sleep in. They were far too poor for that.
Mr. Bucket was the only person in the family with a job. He worked in a toothpaste factory, where he sat all day long at a bench and screwed the little caps on to the tops of the tubes of toothpaste after the tubes had been filled. But a toothpaste cap-screwer is never paid very much money, and poor Mr. Bucket, however he worked hard, and however fast he screwed on the caps, was never able to make enough to buy one half of the things that so large a family needed. There wasn't even enough money to buy proper food for the mall, The only meals they could afford were bread and margarine for breakfast, boiled potatoes and cabbage for lunch, and cabbage soup for supper. Sundays were a bit better, They all looked forward to Sundays because then, although they had exactly the same, everyone was allowed a second helping.
