Once, I thought I didn’t do well in an exam. I became very sad and didn’t have confidence in any other exams. But when I saw the result, it was not as bad as I thought. I worried about it too much. If only I could be optimistic about everything!

Carol: The only thing I am not satisfied with about myself is my studies. I often get nervous before exams. My teachers and parents encourage me not to worry about it and believe in myself, but it doesn’t work. I don’t know how to relax. If I were more confident, I would be very happy.

Sally grew up in a small country in Southeast Asia. She wanted very much to explore the big world one day. When she was in her late twenties, she got a scholarship (奖学金) to study films in England, a golden chance that she felt was the first step towards her dreams.

Dear Mr Hunt,
My problem is that I can’t get on with my family. Relations between my parents have become difficult. They fight a lot, and I really don’t like it. It’s the only communication they have. I don’t know if I should say anything to them about this. When they argue, it’s like a big, black cloud hanging over our home. Also, my elder brother is not very nice to me. He always refuses to let me watch my favourite TV show. Instead, he watches whatever he wants until late at night. I don’t think this is fair. At home I always feel lonely and nervous. Is that normal What can I do
Sad and Thirteen
Dear Sad and Thirteen,
It’s not easy being your age, and it’s normal to have these feelings. Why don’t you talk about these feelings with your family If your parents are having problems, you should offer to help. Maybe you could do more jobs around the house so that they have more time for proper communication.
Secondly, why don’t you sit down and communicate with your brother You should explain that you don’t mind him watching TV all the time. However, he should let you watch your favourite show. I hope things will be better for you soon.
Robert Hunt

One of my clearest childhood memories is sitting at our kitchen table with my father. He put canvases, paints, and brushes in front of me. Then, he showed me how to mix colours and use different materials. Those were the best days—when we let our imaginations run wild and paint whatever came to mind.
My father’s love for art started in a tiny village. Even though he didn’t have much money, he never let that stop him. He saved money to buy paints and coloured pencils. Sometimes, he even drew on the walls of his home! At the age of 15, he took a big risk and moved to America alone. After years of hard work, he finally became a US citizen.
As I got older, he continued to give me lessons, teaching me different brush strokes and how to take care of my art supplies. He taught me to find beauty in everything and everyone around me. I grew to love drawing people, as I could highlight the physical features that make everyone unique and beautiful.
But things varied when I started looking at my father’s amazing paintings and art on Instagram. Suddenly, I felt like my simple drawings weren’t good enough. His landscapes looked so real, while my drawings seemed plain. I looked through my sketchbooks and found something wrong with every single picture. I used to love art more than anything, but I started thinking I just wasn’t talented. Instead of practising more, I decided to quit drawing.
My father quickly noticed that I wasn’t drawing or painting as much any more. One day, he said, “Mary, I think you should try out for the art school. When I was your age, I dreamed of having a chance to study art, but it never happened.” His words touched me deeply.
So, for the next few months, I got busy. I picked out my best drawings, fixed up the ones that needed work, and filled my portfolio (画夹) with all my art. It wasn’t really easy. But when I was in the face of difficulties, I kept thinking about my father’s story. Looking back at my pictures later, I could see how much I had improved since then.
To my surprise, I got into the art school! Walking into that place was like entering a whole new world. Everyone there loved art as much as I did. The teachers didn’t just teach us to draw better. They taught us to be proud of our unique styles. I used to be shy about showing my art, but now I’m not afraid to share it. Thanks to my father, I’ve found my love for art again and learned to be confident in my skills.

As you grow up, you need to explore the world in new ways, while your parents try to protect you from the dangers in the world. However, different ideas might lead to fights in families. Do you know how to make your home a happy place Try the following.
Respect each other.
Respect is more than just doing what you are told to do. Respect is about valuing what your parents have to say. It is also about them valuing what you have to say. Mark, 14, puts it this way, “At least try to understand whatever they are trying to tell you, no matter how bad it may sound at the time.”
Don’t skip (略过) the communication.
You can communicate with your parents by expressing your thoughts in a respectful way. Your ability to explain your thoughts calmly may give your parents a chance to see you in a new light.
Trust is important.
You are more likely to get along with your parents and have more freedom if your parents trust you.

Some teenagers find that doing fun activities with parents can help them out. Sharing time together can build trust. It can be easy to forget that parents are more than rule-makers. They’re interesting people who like watching movies, playing cards and going shopping—just like you!
Your relationship with your parents may sometimes be good and sometimes bad. But remember that parents can be a great support when things are not going well. So try your best to improve the relationship between you and your parents. If your parents see that you try your best, they will do the same.

Sometimes, families can be hard. People argue a lot. They get upset. Sometimes they stop talking. My family has had lots of ups and downs. I’d say arguments often happen in my family, too.
I have an older brother and an older sister. I’m the baby boy in the family. We grew up in quite a small house and often didn’t have a lot of money. My mum and dad argued pretty much all the time, just about anything. My brother and sister argued. And I used to argue.
But as I got older, I always chose to be the mediator. I would try to look at both sides of the argument and bring them together to make peace. “Dad, you shouldn’t say that to Mum, but Mum, try to see it this way.” “Come on guys, we all love each other. It’s just been a bad day.” I’d say it often worked.
I learned much growing up in my family: understanding, being patient and the truth that sometimes things just don’t go your way. We all make mistakes. We all say things that we wish we hadn’t. The key is to try and understand. Of course, sometimes, arguments do need to happen. If something is wrong, it needs to be solved and sometimes, we get angry about it. But as long as we can reflect and look at things with an attitude of care and responsibility, we can weather the storm and help each other out.

①Have you ever heard about peer pressure People who are at your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they try to influence how you act and to get you to do something, it’s called peer pressure.
②Peers can have a positive influence on each other. Maybe another student in your science class taught you an easy way to remember the planets in the solar system. Maybe you got others excited about your new favourite book, and now everyone is reading it. These are examples of how peers positively influence each other.
③Sometimes peers influence each other in negative ways. For example, a few kids in school might try to get you to cut class with them. Your soccer friend might try to convince you to be mean to another player and never pass him the ball.
④It is hard to be the only one who says “no” to peer pressure, but you can do it. Paying attention to your own feelings and beliefs about what is right and wrong can help you know the right thing to do.
⑤You’ve probably had a parent or a teacher advising you to “choose your friends wisely”. Peer pressure is a big reason why they say this. If you choose friends who don’t cut class, smoke cigarettes, or lie to their parents, then you probably won’t do these things either, even if other kids do.
⑥If you continue to face peer pressure and find it difficult to deal with, talk to someone you trust. Don’t feel guilty if you’ve made a mistake or two.
