It was a sunny day in July, and I was a new paraglider (滑翔伞) pilot heading to Washington to fly at Parker Mountain. Flying in the middle of a summer day can be risky because of turbulence (风暴) and strong winds. For that reason, I had only flown in the mornings or evenings until then, but that day, I planned to fly at 2:00 p.m.
The takeoff went smoothly. I brought up my wing, turned around, and ran west off the mountain. I felt the wing lift me up, and it was an incredible feeling of free flight. However, as I passed the shoulder of the mountain, a strong north wind hit me, causing the right side of my glider wing to collapse (塌陷). I started to fall, but I leaned my body to the still-open left side, just as I had been trained. After a tense few seconds, the right side filled with air again and popped back into place.
The turbulence threw me from side to side, like being in a boat on rough water-except the “water” was the turbulent air. I struggled to keep my wing steady in the wind. Then, I flew into a powerful wind that shot me straight up into the sky.
I wasn’t enjoying this. Panicking wouldn’t help, so I focused on staying calm and doing what I had been trained to do. I guided my glider out of the wind and began sinking toward the ground. I was eager to land as soon as possible. Below me, a thick forest of pine trees blocked my path, but beyond the ridge ahead, I knew there was a farmer’s field if I could make it that far.
I cleared the trees and reached the field. I circled down quickly and made a rough but safe landing next to a small stream. I had never been so happy to be back on solid ground. My hands were shaking, and it took several minutes for my mind and body to calm down.
Pilots have a saying: “It’s better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than to be in the air wishing you were on the ground.” And they’re right.

Think about all the plastic in our lives like plastic bags, plastic cups and plastic plates. Also, think about those forks and spoons in your school cafeteria. They may be plastic. For better or for worse, plastic seems to be everywhere.
Back in the 1990s, a man named Charles Moore discovered a huge floating island of plastic in the North Pacific Ocean. Since then, four more floating islands of plastic have been discovered in other parts of the world. With time going, Moore says, the island that he discovered is growing and spreading much farther than he expected. He made that discovery during a 30-day research expedition (考察).
“They found a lot more plastic than they’ve ever seen farther away from the area that’s called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” said Marieta Francis, the executive director of the A.M.R.I. — an institute that Moore created to investigate the floating plastic problem. “They ran across it sooner than expected.”
Experts say they’re not sure what all this plastic is doing to the health of our oceans or our own health. They suspect that small fish are eating tiny bits of the plastic and that those tiny little bits are getting into bigger fish when the bigger fish eat the small fish. Of course, we’re at the top of the food chain — most of the time, at least. So that means if the plastic is getting into the big fish, then it’s getting into the fish we eat and very possibly getting into us.
Moore and other researchers hope to figure out what effect all that plastic is having. But experts say their research is still in its very early stages. “What we do know for sure right now is that anywhere from 10,000 to 35,000 tons of plastic is floating on the surface of our oceans. And we humans put it there,” said Moore.
46. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. Plastic can be shaped very easily.
B. Plastic has a terrible effect on people’s lives.
C. Many items in daily use are made out of plastic.
D. Plastic products should not be used in school cafeterias.
47. What has Moore found
A. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is beginning to disappear gradually.
B. Four islands of plastic have appeared in the South Pacific Ocean.
C. The floating plastic problem can be solved easily.
D. The island of plastic has grown beyond his expectation.
48. According to experts, the floating plastic ______.
A. may threaten human health
B. may cut off the food chain
C. has caused a lot of fish to die
D. has become part of most fish’s food
49. When mentioning the islands of plastic, Moore may feel ______.
A confident B. worried
C. enthusiastic D. confused
50. The purpose of the text is to ______.
A. call on people to fight against the islands of plastic
B. warn human beings of the bad effect of the islands of plastic
C. report what researchers have found about the islands of plastic
D. criticize human beings for what they have done to the oceans
D
There comes a point when a thing becomes too much. It might be at the end of the meal when that final slice of pizza turns you from “comfortably full” to “ergh”; when the car karaoke goes from being huge fun to a throat-aching chore; or when you’ve been playing video games for hours and your eyes start to burn.
The fact that humans have unstoppable thirsts and appetites is not new wisdom. It’s found in Ancient Greece and in most of the world’s philosophies today. But in the Swedish idea of lagom, it has been given fresh life. Lagom means trying to find balance rather than constantly grasping for more, which stands in sharp contrast to American culture.
There are two separate aspects of lagom. The first is a kind of social awareness that recognizes that what we do affects other people. If you take three cookies from the plate, two other people aren’t going to get one. The second, however, is a mental shift that finds contentment in satisfaction. Many of us have the idea that bigger means better, that a bank balance means status, and that excess means happiness. Lagom, though, is to enjoy the “just right”, appreciating that sometimes less really is more. After all, talking to a friend over a coffee is nice. But meeting with ten friends after ten coffees does not make things better.
So, how are we to apply lagom to our lives I’m sure your childhood is treasured with great holiday memories and brilliant getaways, but chances are that your fondest, deepest memories were those spent simply at home. You do not have to pay lots of money or travel for hours to have fun. A cheaply cooked meal and some old-worn pajamas (睡衣) are “just enough” to have fun.
There are other ways we can apply lagom, from how often we see our friends to how much we buy to live sustainably. But the most profound element of lagom is simply to rest and relax when a thing feels good. Simple pleasures do not mean simple humans.
51. According to Paragraph 1, “too much” will eventually lead to ________.
A. excitement or pride B. depression or anxiety
C. satisfaction or enjoyment D. discomfort or regret
52. What does the American culture encourage based on the text
A. Chasing more wealth. B. Living a simple life.
C. Seeking only basic needs. D. Striving for constant success.
53. What does the underlined word “excess” most likely mean in Paragraph 3
A. Harmony. B. Limited amount. C. Enough. D. Too much.
54. By writing the passage, the author intends to ________.
A. encourage us to pursue the material wealth
B. show us that lagom is an extreme way of life
C invite us to appreciate what we have and find balance in life
D. highlight that simple pleasures lead to a successful life
55. What could be the best title for the passage
A. Wisdom of Lagom: Redefining Philosophy
B. Swedish Lagom: Balance and Happiness
C. Lagom and Social Awareness: Sharing and Caring
D. Understanding Lagom: Influence of Swedish Culture
