Christine Rowsey spent three tough years working full-time as a financial risk analyst to
support her 5-year-old son Bryson, while taking evening courses at a community college to pursue her nursing dream. “I didn’t have any money or possessions left; all I had was a fragile dream,”
she recalled with emotion.
That dream took root three years earlier, when she suffered the tragic loss of her husband, who had been diagnosed with cancer. Her husband fought for his life in the intensive care unit for seven months, undergoing more than a dozen operations. However, in the end, he left Christine
forever. It was the sincere and constant support from the hospital’s nursing staff during that
painful experience that inspired her to quit her original job and determinedly pursue a nursing career to help others the way she had been helped.
Just as she was about to start formal nursing courses, her misfortunes brought her progress to a halt — her car was repossessed (收回). She couldn’t travel to class. Luckily, she discovered Volunteers of America (VOA) Michigan’s “Cars Helping People” program in Pontiac, which
provided donated vehicles at fair prices for people in need, and she worked out a reasonable payment plan.
She then enrolled in Oakland University’s one-year licensed practical nursing program, but she struggled with heavy tuition fees and the double pressure of studying hard as a top student and taking good care of Bryson. Another program run by VOA, the Health Profession Opportunity
Grants, came to her rescue. It not only covered her full tuition but also offered an allowance for Bryson’s daily needs like food and gas, and even paid for her certification test fees.
With the guidance from VOA’s employment specialist Rene DeLoach, who supported her through coursework, license application and job hunting, Christine finally achieved her goal. Now working as a licensed practical nurse at Riverview Health in Detroit, she is already pursuing her
Registered Nurse certificate and sharing her inspiring story with young people. “VOA helped me rewrite my life exactly the way I wanted,” she said gratefully.
4 .Why did Christine decide to work as a nurse
A .To care for her son. B .To inspire patients.
C .To repay the kindness. D .To earn stable income.

C .The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Most people believe their beliefs and opinions are logical and impartial based on years of experience and objective analysis of the information available. In reality, we are all subject to
confirmation bias — the tendency to interpret new information as confirmation of our existing
beliefs while subconsciously ignoring evidence that proves them wrong. The brain does this to protect our self-worth, making us feel confident and in control. But if left unexamined,
confirmation bias can often negatively affect our decision-making process.
A big part of my coaching practice is helping clients question their current belief systems,
even though it feels terrible in the moment, so they can benefit from changed beliefs in the long
run. Many clients have never examined their beliefs, and they don’t even know the repetitive
thoughts driving their confirmation bias. They just think that’s the way they are. I help them see
that what they’ve been thinking true their whole lives is not necessarily true and they don’t have to keep believing that if it is not serving them in life.
The problem with confirmation bias is that facts don’t change our beliefs. Even where there is plentiful evidence to prove our belief wrong, our brain will dismiss it as an exception. We are
unwilling to change our beliefs because often that requires changing our identity, which we
naturally resist. The only way to change a beliefis a conscious decision to do so. However,
reinterpreting reality is tiring. Our underlying current of thought has become habitual in a way that takes very little energy from us. Changing our beliefs requires a lot of energy and discomfort.
If you want to change, you need to understand your confirmation bias and put effort into
changing your default (默认) thinking. Your new focused thinking will take more work. You will initially resist it. But eventually, your intentional thought will become your new belief system.
And then your confirmation bias will work to your advantage as your brain will be looking for
evidence to confirm beliefs that are helping you improve your life, as opposed to holding you back.
8 .What is a feature of confirmation bias according to paragraph 1
A .It promotes logical thinking. B .It contributes to objective judgment.
C .It weighs new evidence heavily. D .It processes information selectively.
9 .What can be learned about many of the author’s clients
A .They are unaware of their mental habits. B .They are unwilling to admit mistakes.
C .They rarely have repetitive thoughts. D .They refuse to examine their beliefs.
10 .What can we infer from the passage about people’s resistance to changing beliefs
A .It mainly comes from the fear of losing self-confidence.
B .It is closely related to people’s sense of identity.
C .It can be easily overcome with the help of a coach.
D .It results from the lack of sufficient evidence against beliefs.
11 .Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A .Confirmation Bias: Its Impact and Overcoming Strategies
B .How to Change Your Belief System Effectively
C .The Role of Coaching in Correcting Confirmation Bias
D .Why Facts Fail to Change Our Beliefs

In the past, fireproofing materials were made with poisonous, flame-proofing chemicals.
These have been replaced with other chemicals, which are considered safer, but some studies have linked these alternatives with brain damage and harm to water creatures. Tien Huynh at a
University in Melbourne, Australia, and her colleagues have developed a more eco-friendly fireproofing material using mycelium — the root-like structure of fungus (真菌).
They grew mycelium from the fungus that can be eaten in containers of liquid molasses — a byproduct of sugar production. The mycelium grew as blankets on top of the molasses, which the researchers removed and dried before pressing them into millimetre-thin sheets. When the
mycelium sheets were exposed to 800℃ flames, an outer layer of char (碳化) was quickly generated to prevent the rest ofthe sheets from burning.
“The material caught fire for about one second then ceased burning,” Huynh says. “The sheets only produced water and carbon dioxide (CO2) when they were set on fire, making them safer than existing fireproofing chemicals.”
The team now hopes to develop fire-resistant coating for homes and other buildings out of the fungus, which could be applied as a wallpaper-thin sheet or made into thicker panels. “The
material appears to be highly durable,” says Huynh. Her team previously used it to make bricks, and she says she has had one sitting in her room for 10 years that hasn’t shown any signs of
breaking down. “I can still jump on it because it’s so strong,” she says. “The fungus is killed during the drying process, so there is no danger of mushrooms growing out of the sheets.”
However, scaling up production of the material could be challenging. “The fungus don’t need light or electricity to grow, but they do need a big space if you want to grow enough for the
building industry,” says Huynh. “Because they’re biological organisms, they’re also easy to be
polluted (污染).” But Huynh mentions that her team has been approached by industry groups that may be able to assist with this scale-up process.
12 .How is paragraph 1 organized
A .History → Current state → Future prediction
B .Problem → Existing solution → New solution
C .Description → Definition → Recommendation
D .Assumption → Supporting details → Conclusion
13 .What stops the mycelium sheets from burning
A .The application of liquid molasses. B .The absorption of heat by inner parts.
C .The formation of a protective cover. D .The release of fire-proofing chemicals.
14 .How does Huynh emphasize the material’s durability
A .By giving an example. B .By quoting others.
C .By making a comparison. D .By using statistics.
15 .What does Huynh think of the production scale-up of the material
A .It is unlikely. B .It is easily achievable.
C .It is unrealistic. D .It is cautiously promising.

The English writing competition drew near. Jack, who had always struggled to put his thoughts into coherent words, determined to turn to AI for help.
He simply input the given theme of the competition, added a few key words, and hit “generate”. Much to his delight, in less than 5 minutes, the screen lit up. A vivid and
well-structured essay was presented. Jack was amazed by how effortlessly the well-chosen words flowed on the page. Without a second thought, Jack signed his name and submitted the piece,
ignoring the tiny voice of guilt from the bottom of his heart.
His essay stood out among hundreds of entries and was selected to represent the school in the municipal-level contest. When his English teacher, Ms. Cathy, called him to her office, Jack’s heart skipped a beat. With a gentle but firm tone, Ms. Cathy looked straight into his eyes and
asked, “Jack, I need you to tell me the truth — did you write this essay entirely on your own ”
The question hung in the air, heavy and inescapable. Jack’s mind went blank for a moment. The thought of losing the chance to compete, of being laughed at by his classmates for cheating,
overwhelmed him. Taking a shaky breath, he kept his eyes off the teacher and nodded, “Yes, Ms. Cathy. Every word is mine. ”
Ms. Cathy nodded, seemingly satisfied, and patted his shoulder, “That’s great. Your
genuine hard work will pay off. This essay has a unique perspective, and I’m sure it will shine at the municipal contest. ” But Jack didn’t feel any joy. On the contrary, a sense of guilt weighed
heavily on him. That night, he tossed and turned in bed, unable to fall asleep. The lie he had told kept echoing in his ears. He thought about Ms. Cathy’s trusting eyes, about the meaning of the
competition, and about how proud he would have felt if he had written the essay himself. He was torn between the fear of being exposed and the desire to do the right thing.

根据第二段“When the mycelium sheets were exposed to 800℃ flames, an outer layer of char (碳化) was quickly generated to prevent the rest ofthe sheets from burning. (当真菌菌丝片接触 800℃火焰时,会迅速形成一层碳化外层,阻止剩余部分燃烧。)”可知,是保护层的形成阻止了燃烧。故选 C 项。
答案第 3 页,共 11 页
14 .推理判断题。根据第四段“Her team previously used it to make bricks, and she says she has had one sitting in her room for 10 years that hasn’t shown any signs of breaking down. (她的团队曾用它制作砖块,这块砖在她房间放了 10 年没有任何分解迹象。)”可知,Huynh 通过举例强调材料的耐用性。故选 A 项。
However, scaling up production of the material could be
challenging. “The fungus don’t need light or electricity to grow, but they do need a big space if
you want to grow enough for the building industry,” says Huynh. “Because they’re biological
organisms, they’re also easy to be polluted (污染).” But Huynh mentions that her team has been
approached by industry groups that may be able to assist with this scale-up process.

16 .上文“One of the mistakes people make is trying to avoid or ignore negative experiences. (人 们犯的错误之一就是试图避免或忽视负面经历)”指出了人们对待负面经历的常见错误方式。 E 选项“This makes sense, on some level, because they’re painful (这在某种程度上说得通,因为它们很痛苦)”承接上文,解释了人们为何会犯这种错误(因为负面经历是痛苦的,所以想逃 避是人之常情)。这为下文“However, trying to avoid... actually damages...”
17.下文“Your body and your mind are connected. If you’re struggling to feel positive, it could be because your body is working against you. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy has shown that your
posture can affect the levels of stress hormones in your body. Try standing up straight. Hold your
shoulders back and your chest forward. Hold your gaze in front of you.
故选 A 项。
18 .上文“Try standing up straight. Hold your shoulders back and your chest forward. Hold your gaze in front of you. (试着站直。肩膀向后,胸部向前。目光直视前方)”列举了具体的身体姿势调整方法。F 选项“These “power poses” can help you feel more confident and optimistic (这些“能量姿势”可以帮助你感到更自信和乐观)”顺承上文,通过“These “power poses””指代上文描述的具体姿态,并总结了这些姿态带来的积极心理效果(增强自信和乐观),是对本段建议的最终落脚点。故选 F 项。
19 .上文“Compassion is doing something kind for someone else, especially if that person is less fortunate than you are. It can really boost your positivity. (同情心是为他人做一些友善的事,尤其是当那个人比你不幸时。它真的能提升你的积极性)”定义了同情心并说明了其益处。D 选项“Think of ways that you can serve others (思考你可以服务他人的方式)”顺承上文,给出了将同情心付诸实践的具体建议,即思考如何“serve others (服务他人)”。下文“whether it’s on an individual level or in your community, and practice showing compassion. (无论是在个人层面还是在你的社区中,并练习展现同情心)”则是在 D 选项基础上的进一步说明(服务的范围和练习)。故选 D 项。
20 .上文“A common misperception is that people only need to see a therapist when there’s
something wrong. G 选项“Actually, you go to the doctor for annual checkups even if you’re not sick (事实上,即使你没有生病,你也会每年去看医生做体检)”通过类比(看医生做体检),有力地反驳了上述误解,说明了寻求专业帮助也可以是预防性的、维护整体健康的正常行为。这与下文“seeing a therapist can also be a helpful preventive technique (看治疗师也可以是一种有用的预防技巧)”的观点完全一致,并为该观点提供了生动的例证。

故填 is
sweeping。
故填 and。

46 .Dear teachers and classmates,
Today, I am honored to deliver a speech on the theme of cultural confidence and language spread.
Nowadays, more Chinese-style English words like “add oil” and “hongbao” are included in the OED and widely used globally. This is mainly because China’s rapid development has made its culture increasingly influential, and these vivid words perfectly carry unique Chinese cultural connotations that are hard to replace by existing English expressions.
In my view, this trend is a reflection of our cultural confidence. It shows that Chinese
culture is integrating into the world, and we should continue to inherit and innovate our culture to let it shine brighter globally.
That’s all my ideas. Thank you!

The next day, Jack went to the teacher’s office. His hands trembled as he knocked on the
door. When Ms. Cathy looked up, he took a deep breath and confessed, “I didn’t write the essay
myself— I used AI.” Tears welled up in his eyes as he explained his struggle with writing and his regret. To his surprise, Ms. Cathy smiled gently. “Honesty takes courage, Jack,” she said. “Let’s work together to improve your writing skills. The competition is about growth, not just winning.” Relieved, Jack felt a weight lift off his shoulders.
The day to announce the results of the contest came. Though Jack’s essay was disqualified, Ms. Cathy praised his integrity in front of the class. Later, she handed him a new assignment — a handwritten essay on “The Value of Honesty.” This time, Jack poured his heart into it. Weeks
later, his revised work won a school award. Standing on the stage, he realized true success came not from shortcuts, but from effort and honesty. The applause he received felt sweeter than any trophy.
The next day, Jack went to the teacher’s office, his heart heavy with guilt. Hanging his head and with his voice shaking slightly, he summoned up all his courage to confess the truth to Ms.
Cathy. He honestly admitted that he had turned to AI to generate the essay and apologized
earnestly for his dishonesty and cheating in the competition. Much to his astonishment, Ms. Cathy didn’t scold him; instead, she patted his shoulder gently, praising him for his bravery to face his
mistake. She emphasized that honesty was far more precious than any honor and encouraged him to rewrite the essay independently. Jack nodded firmly, a strong determination welling up in his heart to make amends for his fault through his own efforts.
The day to announce the results of the contest came. Though Jack failed to win any prize
with his own written essay, he felt a great sense of relief and genuine pride from the bottom of his heart. Ms. Cathy approached him with a warm smile, telling him that he was the real winner
because he had chosen honesty and courageously corrected his mistake. At that moment, Jack

came to realize that the true significance of the competition was never about winning a prize, but about challenging himself, adhering to integrity and growing through his mistakes. From then on, he devoted himself to improving his writing skills diligently and resolved never to take shortcuts in his study again.
