一、理解概念
在复合句中充当表语的从句叫表语从句。表语从句一般用在“主语+系动词+表语”的结构中,它最明显的特征是跟在连系动词be之后。
表语从句的常用引导词有:
1. 连词 that, whether;
2. 连接代词:what, who, which, whom, whose, whatever, whoever, whomever, whichever等;
3. 连接副词:when, where, how, why等;
4. 其他连接词:as if/though, because。
What the place impressed me most was that it has many places of interest.
这个地方给我印象最深的是它有很多的名胜。
This is where I don't agree with you.
这就是我不同意你的地方。
That is why he was late for class again.
那就是他又一次上课迟到的原因。
二、语法规则
1. that引导的表语从句
that引导表语从句时只起连接作用,在句子中不作任何成分,也无任何意义,但通常不能省略。
The fact is that he is old enough to go to school.
事实是他已经到了上学的年龄。
The trouble was that they couldn't agree among themselves.
问题是他们内部意见不统一。
当主句的主语为advice,suggestion,proposal,recommendation,order,command, request, requirement等表示“建议、命令、要求”的名词时,表语从句的谓语动词要用“should+动词原形”结构表示虚拟,其中should可以省略。
His requirement was that the floor (should) be kept clean.
他的要求是保持地板干净。
My advice is that your homework (should) be finished in time every day.
我的建议是你每天要及时完成作业。
2. whether引导的表语从句
whether意为“是否”,引导表语从句时只起连接作用,在句子中不作任何成分。
His first question was whether Mr Smith had arrived yet.
他的第一个问题是史密斯先生到了没有。
The question is whether he has passed the test.
问题是他是否通过了测试。
whether引导表语从句时一般不用if替代。
3. 连接代词引导的表语从句
连接代词在表语从句中作主语、宾语、表语或定语。
The question is what caused the accident.
问题是什么造成了这次事故。
My trouble is who (whom) I can turn to for help.
我的麻烦是我能向谁求助。
My question is whose turn it is to be on duty today.
我的问题是今天该轮到谁值日。
what引导表语从句时在从句作主语、宾语、表语或定语,相当于定语从句中的“先行词+关系代词”的形式,表示“……的事情(内容、地点、样子等)”。
What he told you was what (=the thing that) had been discussed at the meeting.
他告诉你的就是在会上讨论的内容。
The mountain is no longer what (=the form that) it used to be.
这座山已经不是过去的样子了。
This is what (=the place that) was once called the paradise.
这就是过去曾经被叫作天堂的地方。
4. 连接副词引导的表语从句
连接副词在表语从句中作时间、地点、原因、方式等状语。
The question is when he can arrive at the hotel.
问题是他什么时候可以到达酒店。
This is where he was born.
这就是他出生的地方。
That is why you see this old woman before you now, Jeanne.
珍妮,这就是现在这个老妇人出现在你面前的原因。
5. as if/though引导的表语从句
as if/though引导的表语从句常置于连系动词look, seem, sound, appear等后面。
It looks as if/though it is going to rain.
天看起来要下雨。
It sounds as if/though someone is knocking on the door.
听起来好像有人在敲门。
as if/though引导的表语从句如果描述的是事实,从句谓语动词就用陈述语气;如果与事实不符,就用虚拟语气(表示与现在事实相反时,从句动词用一般过去时,be动词通常用were;表示与过去事实相反时,从句动词用过去完成时;表示与将来事实相反时,从句动词用would/could/might+动词原形)。
They talk very loudly as if nobody were around.
他们说话声音很大,好像周围没人似的。
They talked as if they had met before.
他们交谈着好像以前见过面似的。
6. because引导的表语从句
because引导的表语从句通常只用于This/That/It is because ... 结构中。
I'm very angry now. That is because you haven't called me for a long time.
我现在很生气。那是因为你好长时间没给我打电话了。
(1)This/That/It is because ... 强调原因;This/That/It is why ... 强调结果。
He was sent to the hospital. That's because he was ill.
他被送往医院,是因为他生病了。
He was ill. That's why he was sent to the hospital.
他生病了,所以被送往医院。
(2)reason作主语时,表语从句只能用that引导,而不能用because,即构成句型:The reason why ... is that ...; The reason for ... is that ... 。
The reason why he was late was that he missed the early bus.
他迟到的原因是他错过了早班公共汽车。
