Jin Ying, 26, is a lover of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
She took part in a three-month training course on acupuncture and tuina
(针灸推拿) in the winter of 2023 at Beijing University of Chinese
Medicine.
Jin’s life has been different since the training. She changed her life
habits after learning the Five Elements theory. For example, she avoided
sweating too much during exercise in winter because the cold of winter
means people should slow down, according to TCM. For her, learning
these skills and theories was not about becoming a TCM doctor but
rather about embracing (拥抱) a new lifestyle.
She is not an unusual example of young people becoming interested
in TCM. A survey by China Youth Daily showed that 93.3 percent of
the 1,000 young people who took part had tried different TCM
treatments.
“I have seen a rising number of young people come to me for neck
and back pains, which are usually related to the elderly,” said Ma
Huifang, a TCM doctor at Guoyitang, a TCM hospital affiliated with
Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
“Between Western medicine and TCM, young people often choose
TCM because of its efficacy (疗效),” according to Ma. Some people
question why TCM treats the same illnesses with different prescriptions.
“This is actually an advantage of TCM, rather than a shortcoming, as
it can be a more accurate (精准的) treatment for different patients,”
Ma explained.
Younger age groups are embracing TCM, and, at the same time,
TCM is also benefiting young people. As Jin noted, “It helps young
people understand Chinese medicine and learn why it is believed to be a
treasure of our Chinese culture.”

Nan Rendong (南仁东) was an excellent Chinese scientist who
became known as the “father of FAST (500米口径球面射电望远镜)”,
the world’s largest radio telescope. His amazing life shows how strong
will and clear goals can achieve a big thing.
Nan was born in 1945 in Jilin Province. In 1963, he entered
Tsinghua University to study radio technology. There, he stood out not
only for his intelligence but also his strong will. Besides his major,
Nan worked hard to master English, believing it would help him learn
from international research. After graduating from Tsinghua University,
Nan worked at several research centers. In 1993, he suggested building
China’s first great radio telescope—a challenging project that many
foreign experts doubted whether it could succeed. From 1994 to 2015,
Nan led his team across China’s mountains to find the perfect location.
Finally, they chose a natural low land in Guizhou Province.
During the process of building FAST, Nan and his team faced lots
of difficulties, including bad weather, technical problems, and limited
funding. There were times when the project nearly stopped, but Nan
often worked late into the night and could always find the solutions.
When completed in 2016, FAST became China’s most important
astronomical achievement. It can pick up weak radio signals from faraway
star systems, helping scientists search for alien life and study the origin
of the universe.
Unfortunately, Nan passed away in 2017 because of cancer, but
his influence has continued. An asteroid (小行星) was named after
him in 2018. The Chinese government awarded him the national honor of
“People’s Scientist” in 2019. More importantly, he inspires countless
young people to study hard. His story proves that with great passion and
strong will, even the greatest dreams can come true.#1.4

Shanxi is full of amazing natural and cultural treasures. The Yellow
River runs along its western and southern parts, and the Taihang
Mountains stand tall in the eastern part. This area has a rich history,
with many ancient buildings.
Shanxi is home to over 28,000 ancient buildings, including
temples (庙宇), grottoes (石窟), bridges and more. Many of
these buildings date back to the Yuan dynasty and even earlier. They
show the history and culture of different times. Yungang Grottoes in
Datong is one of the most special ancient Buddhist (佛教) grottoes in
China, with a large number of amazing stone statues (雕像) and rich
historical stories.
Why is Shanxi a perfect home for these amazing ancient buildings
In the past, Shanxi’s rich forests provided enough wood to build these
buildings. At the same time, its dry weather and few natural disasters
(灾害) helped keep them out of danger for hundreds of years. Also,
people’s hard work played an important role in protecting them.
Last year, the video game Black Myth: Wukong made Shanxi
become more popular. In the game, 27 out of its 36 scenes come from
Shanxi’s ancient buildings. As a result, more and more people expect to
visit these places in real life.#1.4

Guotuan. He was the first Chinese to win the World Table Tennis

starting the golden era of Chinese table tennis. He was born on August
10th, 1937, into a fisherman family in Guangdong.
Rong showed great interest and talent in table tennis from a young

Rong Guotuan continue to live on in the Chinese table tennis teams and
all the other Chinese sports.
Rong’s ways of training and practical skills have been passed down

With the development of technology, the use
of smartphones for learning among middle school
students has become a hot topic of discussion.
A 2024 survey shows that 65% of students
use social media when doing homework on their phones. Supporters argue
that using phones saves time. Teachers can check homework quickly,
and parents receive quick and direct comments about their kid’s progress.
58% of parents believe digital check-ins have made progress in tracking
(跟踪) study habits. Students also like to use various apps to practice
English and work out difficult math problems. Educational apps like
Study Master can even correct mistakes automatically (自动地),
making learning more efficient.
Doctors warn that long screen time harms children’s eyesight. Some
middle school students now spend over 3 hours daily on educational apps,
leading to eye strain and fatigue. The blue light from phones also
influences sleep patterns, making it harder for students to fall asleep.
Li Ming, a 14-year-old student, says, “I want to finish my
math homework first, but I always end up watching funny videos
instead.” This distraction reduces the quality of work. What’s more, as
students write less by hand, the reliance (依赖) on digital tools may
have long-term effects on their ability to write clearly and effectively.#1.1.3
Some teachers are trying to solve the problems. Ms. Zhang from
Beijing, for example, only asks students to send voice recordings for
English homework. She believes, “Phones are tools. We need to teach
kids to use them wisely.” A few schools have developed rules limiting
phone use for homework to 30 minutes per day. This method helps
students stay focused while reducing health risks.

The Little New Year, usually a week before the Lunar New Year,
falls in January or February. It is also known as the Festival of the
Kitchen God, the deity (神) who oversees the moral character of
each household. Here are five things you should know about the Little
New Year.
1.Offer sacrifices to the Kitchen God
One of the most distinctive traditions of the Little New Year is the
burning of a paper image of the Kitchen God, who will report on the
family’s conduct over the past year. The offerings to the Kitchen God
include the pig’s head, fish, sweet bean paste, melons, fruit,
boiled dumplings, barley (大麦) sugar, and Guandong candy. Most
of the offerings are sweets of various kinds. It is thought that this will
seal the Kitchen God’s mouth and encourage him to only say good
words about the family when he rises to Heaven to make his report.
2.House cleaning
According to Chinese folk beliefs, during the last month of the
year, ghosts and deities must choose either to return to Heaven or to
stay on earth. It is believed that in order to ensure the ghosts and deities’
timely leave, people must completely clean their houses, down to
every last drawer and wardrobe.
3.Paste paper-cuts to windows
On the Little New Year, old couplets and paper-cuts from the
previous Spring Festival are taken down, and new window decorations,
New Year’s posters, and lucky decorations are put up.
4.Bath and haircut
As the old Chinese saying goes, whether they’re rich or poor,
people often have a haircut before the Spring Festival. The activity of
taking a bath and haircut is often taken on the Little New Year.
5.Preparations for the Spring Festival
People have started to stock up on necessary provisions for the
Spring Festival since the Little New Year. Everything needed to make
offerings to the ancestors, entertain guests, and feed the family over
the long holiday must be purchased in advance.
1.____________ About the Little New Year

head, fish, sweet bean paste.

As a kind of traditional Chinese dress, Ma Mian Qun (horse-face
skirt) first appeared in the Song dynasty and grew popular during the
Ming dynasty. The two sides of Ma Mian Qun are pleated (起褶的),
and there is a smooth part in the middle, commonly known as “Ma
Mian”.
Why is it called “Ma Mian” In fact, “Ma Mian” is a kind of
structure used for protection in the city wall system. However, all the
books about Ma Mian Qun only show that the smooth surface without
pleats in the middle is called “Ma Mian”. But there is no more
explanation of how Ma Mian Qun got its name. Ma Mian Qun is
colorful, mostly red and blue. Red means good luck and joy. According
to Han customs, women usually wore red skirts during celebrations of
festivals. In the Qing dynasty, blue was also common and popular,
paired with black and yellow.
Ma Mian Qun has different kinds of patterns with different meanings.
For example, loong and phoenix (凤凰) patterns show the love
between a man and a woman or a beautiful marriage. The peony (牡丹)
is a symbol of wealth and honor.
Recently, Ma Mian Qun has become a popular form of skirt for
hanfu fans. More and more modern fashion designers (设计师) find
ideas from Ma Mian Qun. For example, some get ideas from the
patterns. Some combine (结合) the styles of Ma Mian Qun with T-
shirts or blouses, which are more suitable for everyday wear. Even
western fashion has been influenced by Ma Mian Qun for many years.

Xiangsheng is one of the most popular performances in China,
attracting people of all ages—old and young.
No one is sure when exactly xiangsheng was born. But most people
believe that it became an independent art form in the middle and late
Qing dynasty. Performed mainly in Beijing dialect (方言) or standard
Mandarin, xiangsheng is known for its humorous and satirical (讽刺的)
nature. It could be a comedic monologue (喜剧独白), dialogue or
multi-player sketch (多人小品).
As the earliest form of xiangsheng, dankou, or monologue, is
performed by an actor who mainly makes jokes or simply tells humorous
stories. It is known as qunkou when it is performed by three or more
people. But most of the time, xiangsheng is performed by two actors
and is called duikou. The lead actor is called dougen, while the one
playing the supporting role is called penggen.
There are four key skills in xiangsheng, namely, shuo (talking),
xue (imitating), dou (teasing) and chang (singing). The
xiangsheng skills are usually passed on from masters to followers.
1.Xiangsheng is popular and loved by people of _________.
2.The third paragraph talks about ________________________ of

Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Step 4
代词(this/that/these/those/it等)会指代前后文提及的内容,如:人称、
(because/but/for example等)或语义判断衔接关系,从而准确而快速地答
1.总结句:找有“so”“as a result”“all in all”等连接词的选项,或和前
