When a theatre puts on a show, someone has to make the stage look like a castle, or a forest, or a school. That person is the set designer. But before building the real set, they create a small model.
Lizzie Bracken designed the set for a play called You Think It’s Easy Being The Tooth Fairy (精灵) at Lifeline Theater in Chicago.
Ophelia: ________
Lizzie: I think almost every set designer in the world starts with a model. It’s a fast way to see what the set will look like. You can take apart (拆解) a model and put it back together and play with it and make sure everything works before you build it for real.
Ophelia: What’s the model made of
Lizzie: Mainly foamcore (泡沫板). If I’m working on a set with lots of furniture, I’ll just buy models online from a dollhouse or model train company. I love model train stores. You can find some really great things there: trees, furniture and cool lighting. Then I slightly change them the way I want.
Ophelia: The play is about a three-inch-tall tooth fairy. How did you make a grown-up actor look that tiny
Lizzie: Oh, we have lots of tricks! For example, the prop (道具) designer, Jenny Pinson, made some huge coins for the tooth fairy to collect. That made her look small. We also made a giant kid’s hand, about four feet long and a giant cat. Then the rest is left to the audience’s (观众的) imaginations.
Ophelia: What would you like to do next
Lizzie: Maybe Frankenstein… that would be so fun to work on.
Ophelia: Thanks for talking with me!

A.A script of a theatre play. B.A story about the tooth fairy.

A.By playing tricks on the audience. B.By making stage props larger.
C.By finding some shorter actors. D.By asking the audience to imagine.

A.Why do you make models B.Why do you become a set designer

It was Saturday morning. I moved my cart (餐车) around table after table of hungry customers. “Char siu bao, yummy baozi!” I called out. It wasn’t long before I handed out the last dish. And it was time to enjoy some of my grandma’s cooking. Just at that time, I noticed something strange. Our bin was knocked over!
How could it have fallen I wondered. Rubbish and half-eaten baozi littered the ground.
Could it have been the wind As we cleaned up, I looked at the darkening sky. A storm was coming our way, but the tree leaves were hardly moving. So what had caused the bin to fall over I found three heavy stones and placed them on top of the bin. “Let’s see if it will still fall over,” I said to myself.
KABOOM! I awoke early the next morning. I thought it must be a storm. But when I looked out of my window, I found the bin overturned (翻过来的) again!
“Why does this keep happening ” I complained as it started to rain. That’s when I noticed two yellow eyes staring back at me. I jumped out of bed and raced after it.
“So you’re the one that keeps leaving messes for us to clean up!” I said, finally understanding.
I watched as the cat was trying to get the half-eaten baozi inside. Cats aren’t supposed to eat baozi, because garlic (大蒜) could be harmful to cats.
I carefully walked toward him when there was suddenly a loud KABOOM above us. This time, it really was the storm. The cat jumped back into the bin. He was too scared to come out of his new hiding place. Luckily, I had an idea.
I went back to the kitchen to get a few things. Then I slowly made my way to the garage (车库) beside the bin and placed the blanket on the floor. Sure enough, the cat followed me inside, happy to be out of the rain. Then I took out the can of cat food and poured some into a bowl.
It wasn’t long before Grandma appeared. Ashley, what are you-wait, is that a cat
“Grandma, meet my new friend. He loves the smell of your cooking,” I said.
Grandma laughed. Well, it looks like I need to include some cat-friendly baozi on the menu.
“If you do, I think we know who will be first to get up every morning!” I said. The cat “meowed” at me, agreeing with the idea.
31.How might Ashley feel when she found the bin fell over again on the next morning
A.Nervous and scared. B.Surprised and unhappy.
C.Curious and excited. D.Impatient and scared.
32.What can you infer from the passage
A.Ashley was afraid of the storm. B.Ashley would only look after the cat by herself.
C.The cat knocked over the bin to avoid rain. D.The cat would become Ashley’s family member.
33.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage

It’s fun to visit the monkeys at the zoo, watching them play and climb. Sometimes when they sit and look at us, we laugh at how cute they are and talk about how much they seem like us.
But in some countries, monkeys live in cities around people. It might sound fun to have monkeys in the town, but in some cases it isn’t pleasant at all.
Monkey business
In New Delhi, India, thousands of small rhesus monkeys (猕猴) live in the city. They steal food from shopkeepers and break into people’s houses and leave a mess. Sometimes they even bite (咬) people. It’s a big problem.
New Delhi used to have forests around it where monkeys had plenty of space to live in the wild. But more and more people are moving to the city. Every year the city grows and more of the forest is cut down. In fact, in many cases, the city is approaching (接近) the monkeys. Monkeys are smart animals who can adjust to new conditions. And now monkeys are learning to live in their new homes.
Monkey, go!
The city has tried many ways to keep monkeys away. One way is to pay workers to catch monkeys and take them to wild areas far from the city. To keep the monkeys from returning for food, trucks bring food out to them.
More recently, the city has trained larger monkeys to scare away smaller rhesus monkeys. But it doesn’t work. They will come back in a short time.
Whose home
The problem of monkeys living too close to humans won’t be easily solved. Most people like monkeys and don’t want to hurt them—but they don’t want monkeys in their homes either, and they don’t like to be afraid of groups of monkeys. In fact, those monkeys feel exactly the same way about us. But one thing is clear—if we don’t find some ways to protect the homes of wild animals, they may end up in ours.
34.What does the underlined phrase “adjust to” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Get close to. B.Get used to. C.Pay attention to. D.Make a difference to.
35.What can we know about rhesus monkeys from the passage
A.They are not afraid of larger monkeys. B.They are often poorly treated by people.
C.They are curious about the life in the city. D.They don’t have enough food and living space.
36.The following sentence can be best put at the end of ________.
But the wild areas aren’t large enough for all the monkeys anymore.
A.Paragraph 4 B.Paragraph 5 C.Paragraph 6 D.Paragraph 7
37.What’s the writing purpose of this passage
A.To remind people to protect the forest for animals.
B.To introduce rhesus monkeys in India to people.
C.To call on people to help monkeys in the city.
D.To ask people to guard against rhesus monkeys.

Have you ever considered walking through a giant puzzle In a corn maze (玉米迷宫), people can follow miles of winding (弯曲的) paths and run into lots of dead ends before they finally find their way out. For many farmers, showing families the way out can give the farm a lot of extra money.
Simple corn mazes began appearing in the 1980s. In 1993, the first big corn maze created for the public to enjoy was made in Annville, Pennsylvania, by Don Frantz!
During the opening weekend, 6,000 visitors came to get lost in the maze. Charging (收费) only $5 per person, Mr. Frantz earned almost $32,000 in two weeks. The creation was named the world’s largest maze by Guinness World Records! Since then, thousands of corn mazes have been created around the world, and several have broken that record.
“Corn mazes help people connect with their roots (根),” Don Frantz said. “People are so far away from farm life that they are drawn (吸引) to something real and natural.”
About 30,000 visitors a year make that connection at family-owned Harvestville Farm in Donnellson, Iowa. That’s where owner Adam Hohl once got lost in his own maze as he led a family the way out.
Today, Harvestville Farm’s corn maze is as big as nine football fields. Mr Hohl said, “When we see families having fun on the farm, we know that they are making memories that will last a lifetime.”
