The story of fireworks dates back more than 1,000 years in China, and it all began with an accident.
During the Tang Dynasty, around 850 AD, alchemists were attempting to find a way to make people live forever. They mixed sulfur, charcoal and saltpeter together. Instead of creating a medicine for longevity, the mixture exploded when ignited (点燃). Thus, gunpowder was invented by chance.
At first, gunpowder was used for military purposes. However, the Chinese soon found that this powerful powder could also be used for celebrations. They filled gunpowder into bamboo tubes and threw the tubes into fires. The tubes exploded with a loud bang, which people believed could drive away evil spirits. These were the earliest fireworks.
Today, fireworks have become a symbol of joy and celebration worldwide. In China, the best place to enjoy fireworks is Liuyang, a city in Hunan Province. Known as the “City of Fireworks,” Liuyang has a history of fireworks-making that can date back to the Tang Dynasty.
Every October, Liuyang hosts the International Fireworks Festival. During the festival, the night sky is transformed into a magnificent picture. Fireworks of various colors, shapes and sizes light up the sky—some resemble blooming flowers, while others look like falling stars. The festival draws millions of tourists from across the globe.

Dear Peter,
Since you were invited to spend the Spring Festival with a Chinese friend, I think there is something important you should know.
First, let me tell you about some common celebrations. People usually clean their houses to sweep away bad luck. They also put up red couplets and enjoy a big family dinner on New Year’s Eve. Besides, children often get lucky money in red envelopes.
As for Chinese table manners, remember two things. You should wait for the elders to start eating first. Also, it’s polite to try a little of every dish offered to you.
Hope you can enjoy yourself that day!
Li Ming
