2 What can you learn from the story
The Three Brothers and the Chopsticks
Once there were three brothers who often argued. Their father gave them one chopstick each—they broke it easily. Then he gave them a bundle of chopsticks—they couldn’t break it. The father told them: Together, you’re strong; divided, you’re weak.
We learn that working together (teamwork) gives us great power. When people cooperate, they can overcome difficulties that they can’t handle alone.

the questions. Use the words

(pointing at the board) and guiding the discussion about their task.
Guiding the team to solve problems together.
Giving advice to team members.
Organizing and promoting good teamwork to finish tasks well.
From: Tony
To: Ms White
Subject: What can I do !
Dear Ms White,
1 Thank you for making me director of our drama, Snow White. It is a great honour for me. I've never been a leader before. But a problem appeared during the very first task —giving out the roles. Lisa and Mary both wanted to play the princess. Some of the team thought Mary was better. The others went with Lisa. Everyone looked at me and expected me to decide. But I just froze. Actually, I thought Mary was better, too. But what if I was wrong What if I hurt Lisa's feelings
T
2 My silence made Lisa angry. “I'm out!” she shouted and stormed off. Then the whole team was silent. My first day as a leader was awful! What should I do Could you please advise me
Yours,
Tony

W
Dear Tony,
1 I completely understand your difficulties. Sometimes good teamwork
is hard to achieve! So the leader should take responsibility in times
of disagreement.
2 Here is my advice:
3 First, you should discuss the matter with Lisa. Why does she want to
play Snow White What are her strengths and weaknesses You
should work with her to find out.
4 Then, why not have Lisa and Mary both try two roles For example,
Snow White and the queen. All the team members can vote for the
most suitable person for each role.
5 Remember:You're the director, but you don't have to deal with all
the problems yourself. You have a whole team, so ask them, too!
6 I hope my advice is helpful.
Best wishes,
Ms White
Read the emails and find out Tony's problems and Ms White's advice.
Tony's problems:
As the drama director, he faced a conflict when Lisa and Mary both wanted to play the princess. He felt unsure (afraid to choose wrong or hurt Lisa) and froze, which made Lisa angry and leave.
He didn’t know how to handle this problem as a new leader.
Ms White's advice:
Talk with Lisa to know why she wants the role and her strengths /weaknesses.
Let Lisa and Mary try two roles (e.g., princess and queen), then have the team vote for the best fit.
Don’t solve problems alone—ask the team for help.
Choose the best summary of the emails.
a Tony made a wrong choice and doesn't feel like a real leader.
b Tony isn't a confident team leader and Ms White encourages
him.
c Tony has a problem as a team leader and Ms White makes
suggestions.
Complete the table with the correct form of the words and expressions from the emails.

1 Why did Tony freeze
Learning to think for question 1
To understand another person's feelings, you need to "put yourself in that person's shoes". That is, try to imagine your feelings in his /
her position.
Tony froze because it was his first time as a leader and he was faced with a difficult decision. He didn’t want to hurt Lisa’s feelings. And he wasn’t sure if his own opinion (that Mary was better) was right. Besides, Everyone was looking at him and waiting for him to decide, which made him nervous and unsure.
2 Which piece of advice do you find most helpful
I find the second piece of advice most helpful. Because:
It is fair — both get a chance to show their ability.
It takes pressure off Tony — the team helps make the decision.
It can help everyone see who really fits each role better.
Besides Ms White’s advice, what is another solution Tony could try to solve this conflict
Tony could ask Lisa and Mary to work together on a short scene. They could both practice being Snow White for a few minutes. Then, everyone watches and gives friendly feedback. This way, both girls feel heard, and the team can see for themselves who might be better — without voting right away.
