Unit 4 Helping out
Starting out & Understanding ideas
Learning Objectives
In this lesson, you will:
1. understand Leah’s story by reading the passage and
identifying her problems, solutions, and the impact of her
actions.
2. practice reading comprehension skills using vocabulary and
expressions from the text.
3. reflect on the theme of helping others by analyzing Leah’s
qualities and the meaning behind details like "brighter pictures".
Look and say
What does the picture tell you
It shows a scene of people helping each other.
It also highlights the theme “helping out”.
Starting out
Look at the picture and answer the questions.
1. Do you know any stories about
helping others
Yes. I know the story of Lei Feng—he often helped people around him, like mending clothes for villagers or carrying luggage for strangers.
2. Can you share one with the class
Read the quotes and answer the questions.
1. What do the quotes mean
2. Which quote do you most agree with Why
人的生命是有限的,可是,为人民服务是无限的。
我们必须明白,没有什么事比为他人付出更有意义的了。
Man's life is limited, but there is no limit to serving the people.
— Lei Feng
We must learn that there is nothing greater than to do something for others. — Martin Luther King Jr.
A kindness is never wasted. — Aesop
善举永不白费。—伊索
I most agree with Aesop’s quote "A kindness is never wasted."
Last semester, I helped a classmate review English grammar after class. Later, when I forgot my science project materials, she lent me her extra set. Small kind acts always come back.
Understanding ideas
Look at the pictures on the right and answer the questions. Use the words and expressions to help you.
1. What can you see in the picture
I can see a patient lying in a hospital bed, and some people sorting donations (like clothes) in boxes—they seem to be preparing to help those in need.
2. What can you do to help
E.g. I can prepare small gifts to cheer up the patient in
the hospital and help them get through the hard time.
I can also join activities to raise money for those in need, and work with others to help collect donations (just like the people in the picture).
Read the passage. What did Leah do to help other patients
She planned to buy 500 boxes of crayons for the hospital. She used her pocket money and held many activities to raise money for the crayons.
Choose another suitable title for the passage.
a A grey area
b Out of the blue
c A little life colourer
Read the passage again and answer more questions.
1. Why didn’t the hospital have enough crayons for young patients
Because crayons may carry viruses and can only be used once. Besides, the hospital had many new patients every day, so it couldn’t afford new crayons for everyone.
2. How did colouring help Leah
Leah was often in great pain because of her serious disease, and colouring helped her get through that hard time.
3. What did Leah do when her pocket money wasn’t enough for 500 boxes of crayons
She held activities to raise money with the help of her family and friends.
4. What does the nurse mean by saying "She’s added colour to this hospital"
It means Leah’s crayons have made the young patients in the hospital happier, and her kindness has brought warmth to the hospital.
Complete the table with the words and expressions from the passage.
hospital visits
nurse
young patients
