B C and D. Choose the best answer to each question.
Passage One
What could a poem writer and a movie director share More than you think! Langston
Hughes began writing poems in high school and soon became one of America's greatest writers.
Most of his writing is about his experiences as an African American. He wrote poems about
people who worked hard throughout life but still found things to be happy about. He wrote plays
and books about justice for all people, and he wrote kids' books, too. The Sweet and Sour Animal
Book is a book of his animal poems. Pictures and photos were used in the book. "Hold fast to
dreams" is a line in a famous Hughes poem. That's exactly what he did throughout his life.
When Steven Spielberg was in middle school, he wanted to make a film. He had an idea for
a movie, but no money. He started a tree-planting business and made his film with the money he
earned. Spielberg never stopped making films, even after many film schools refused him. Today
he is one of the most popular and important filmmakers in the world. His movies are about people
who are adventurous, brave, and kind. His characters often fight for what is good. Some of his
films are about his Jewish background, such as Schindler's List. Spielberg once said, "I don't
dream that much at night because I dream for a living." In different ways, both Hughes and
Spielberg have encouraged people of all ages to reach their dreams.

Passage Two
The Garbage (垃圾) Project started at the University of Arizona in 1973. Since then, the
students and teachers in it have studied modern garbage in different cities.
To study the garbage, the students had to travel to landfills (填埋场),the places where
cities bury (填埋) their garbage. While the students were studying the garbage they wore
special clothes. Students were very careful when they opened bags of garbage.
One important thing the students have learned from studying the garbage is that the garbage
in landfills disappears very slowly. That was surprising to both the students and many scientists
who had thought that about 70 % of the garbage in landfills would disappear quickly. Even in
cities where it rains a lot, the students found newspapers from 1948, 40-year-old hot dogs, and
三年级《英语》试卷 2 / 11
vegetables from 1970. And the students also found many more empty bottles of cola than they
expected.
How to dispose of our garbage well depends on what kind of garbage it is: regular garbage,
dangerous materials, or recyclable materials, such as newspapers and glass bottles. Regular
garbage goes to regular landfills. Dangerous materials are harmful to people's health and the
environment. They shouldn't go into regular landfills.
Homes are full of dangerous waste. One kind of the dangerous waste in homes is batteries.
When batteries are buried directly in a landfill, they often break open. The poison inside them
moves through rainwater to the bottom of the landfill. Then it can pollute the natural water in the
ground.
Another dangerous waste from homes is motor oil. When people pour old motor oil on the
ground or throw it in the garbage, it pollutes the environment.
Our garbage problem is not new, but as the world's population continues to grow, it will
become a bigger problem.

Passage Three
There are many older people in the world and there will be many more. A little-known fact
is that over 60 percent of the older people live in developing countries. According to the World
Health Organization, by 2020 there will be 1 billion, with over 700 million living in developing
countries.
It is a surprising fact that the population ageing is particularly rapid in developing countries.
For example, it took France 115 years for the proportion of older people to double from 7 percent
to 14 percent. It is estimated to take China a mere 27 years to achieve this same increase.
What are the implications of these increased numbers of older people One of the biggest
worries for governments is that the longer people live, the more likelihood there is for diseases
and for disability. Attention is being paid to the need to keep people as healthy as possible,
including during old age, to lessen the financial burden on the state.
Another significant problem is the need for the younger generations to understand and value
the older people in their society. In some African countries, certainly in Asia, older people are
respected and regarded as the ones with special knowledge. Yet traditions are fading away daily,
which does not ensure the continued high regard of older people. As society changes, attitudes
will change.
Much needs to be done to get rid of age discrimination(歧视) in employment. Life-long
learning programs need to be provided to enable older people to be active members in a country's
development.
Social security policies need to be established to provide adequate income protection for
older people. Both public and private schemes are vital to building a suitable safety net.

marked A,B,C and D. You should choose the ONE that best fits into the passage.
Of all the websites, one that has attracted attention recently is . Most of this
attention has come from the media and tells every reason 31 the website should be 32 . The threat
of Internet predators(窃掠者) is indeed a tough reality, 33 shutting down the site is not the
answer. If 34 shut down, another site would quickly 35 its place. Therefore, the
right way is to teach teens how to use the site safely and educate them 36 who may be predators
and how to 37 them.
The key to 38 safes on the Internet is to make sure that your profile is secure. The 39 way is
to change the privacy setting on your profile to "private”, which protects your information 40
only the people on your friend list can view it. Although this is 41 , it is not perfect. Predators can
find ways to view your profile if they really want to, 42 through backing in(黑客入侵) or
figuring out their way onto your friend list. Thus, you should never post too many personal 43 .
Some people post their home and school addresses, date to birth, and so on, often 44 predators
know exactly where they will be and _45_.
The most information that is safe is your first name and province. Anything more is
basically 46 a predator in your life.
Another big problem is photos. I suggest skipping 47 photos and never posting a photo of a
friend online without his or her 48 .
Most important, never, 49 any circumstances, agree to a real-life meeting with anyone
you meet online, 50 how well you think you know this person. There are no guarantees that
they have told the truth.

Nowadays, many middle school students are taking all kinds of after-school
classes at weekends or on holidays. There are two different opinions about it.
Some people think that students can get better exam results and go to better
senior high schools by taking extra classes. They also believe that students can avoid
watching too much TV or playing computer games in this way.
But others have a different opinion. They think that students need more time to
rest. If they take too many classes, they might feel too stressed. That's not good for
their health. As for me, I don't think taking extra classes is necessary. Learning hard
in class is enough. We just need to go over our lessons after class. We can also teach
ourselves as it is very important for us to have a lifelong learning ability
