Gen Z is changing the rules of work, and the results are redefining what professional success looks like in 2025. According to a new Glassdoor report, “career minimalism” is at the heart of this shift.
In Glassdoor’s survey of more than 1,000 U. S. professionals, a striking 68% of Gen Zrespondents said they wouldn’t pursue management if it weren’t for paycheck or title, signaling a rejection of the traditional corporate climb favored by previous generations and a belief that management is something of a poisonous chalice (圣杯).
The survey, however, is somewhat at odds with other data collected by Glassdoor. Daniel Zhao, chief economist for the company, told Fortune that an earlier report had found Gen Zentering the ranks of management at the same rates as older generations did. “Management is not for everybody, and that’s okay,” he said, “but it is still seen as the best path for climbing the career ladder.”
What the new survey suggests is that management is now seen as a career-ladder move, not something good in its own right. Gen Z approaches life’s traditional milestones with “reasoned skepticism”. They are hungry for coaching and welcome in-office collaboration yet also desire the death of the nine-to-five mentality and embrace flexibility.

Growing up in Cyprus, Elena felt she was different from other girls — she was interested in biology. But it was a family tragedy that helped shape her determination to major in medicine. “My parents lost their first child because he had Down’s syndrome. He passed away when I was about seven years old,” she says. “And I guess that’s always been playing on my mind and I gradually formed the idea of studying medicine.”
At about 14, she set her sights on studying medicine in the UK. “Despite being a student from a foreign country, I achieved A-levels in all my subjects, considered suitable for medicine,” she says. Now as a consultant surgeon at one of the busiest major trauma (创伤) units in England, Elena has spoken of her successful career and the challenges she has encountered as a female doctor including sometimes having to remind patients suspicious of her that “I am the surgeon”.

Elena does not shy away from the fact that being a woman has sometimes felt like a disadvantage. “Find what you love doing day after day, because your professional career is a long time, and it takes a lot — probably like 20 or 30 years of your life. A few weeks ago, an article by Nathan Heller in The New Yorker indicated “the end of the English major”, examining the trend of declining English departments nationwide and the cultural factors that lead students away from spending four years with the passion for Dickens and Shakespeare. Like every other humanities-lover on a college campus that day, I was swept away in the mass panic. My major was, according to a reputable English-major-loved publication, dead.
Heller focused on Arizona State University (ASU) and Harvard University, large “indicators”(higher education. I initially thought he ignored small liberal arts (文科) colleges, assuming English majors were safe at Allegheny College, where students supposedly came for the love of learning, not for middle management when they graduate. But data ruined this hope: Allegheny had 84 English majors (9% of all majors) in the spring semester of 2003, but just 20 (2.5%) now — a 72% drop in about 20 years matching the national trend.
Allegheny’s website fuels optimism, asking, “Why put your mind to just one thing ” and define itself as a “safe place of learning”, unlike ASU, which sees degrees as career stepping stones, or Harvard where, according to Heller, even an “unusual major” finds work. Yet campus reality in Allegheny differs Students get locked into majors early, “mind over major” loses to closed-off departments, and English majors fear unemployment, thinking they wasted time and money.

I major in Mechanical Engineering and Political Science. When someone hears what I study, I usually met with two reactions. First up is a small smile with the word “overachiever” on the tip of their tongue. The second is a look of confusion, followed by an exaggerated (夸张的) “why ”. The short answer: I want to be a problem solver, and engineering teaches me how to become that type of person. In addition, I also want to be able to look at the bigger picture.

What is going to make you impressive is the passion that you have when it be in your study, career, or something else your career and study will enable you to do.
