Cornell University raised the 3 P’s for effective (有效的) reading. The 3 P’s—purpose (目标), preview (预览), plan—allow students to get into their reading and learn more actively.

Alice and her sister were sitting under the tree. Alice felt bored and sleepy. She was thinking when suddenly a Rabbit ran past and said, “Oh dear! I shall be late!” Alice felt surprised because she never saw a rabbit with both a pocket and a watch to take out of it. So she followed him down a rabbit-hole and fell slowly into a long and dark room. She found a tiny door to a beautiful garden but she was too big to get through it.
Looking for a way to get through Alice came to a forest. Then, she met a large mushroom with a Caterpillar (毛毛虫) on top smoking. “Who are you ” It asked. “I don’t really know,” said Alice. “I’ve changed so often today.” The Caterpillar said, “One side of the mushroom will make you taller, the other shorter.” By eating from both sides, she finally became 25cm high and went on her way.
After that, Alice met the Hatter, the Rabbit and a Dormouse at a crazy tea party. By chance, she went back to the long and dark room, picked up the small key, and opened the door to the garden. There, gardeners were painting roses red for the Queen. The Queen arrived and invited Alice to play croquet (槌球)—but the game was strange, with birds as sticks and hedgehogs (刺猬) as balls.

In 1894, Hiram Maxim drew a picture of a car. It looked like a bird and had four wheels (车轮). His idea later inspired an amusement park ride (游乐园设施), but it was not what he really wanted.
Now, a company in California called Alef Aeronautics is making Maxim’s dream come true. Four founders (创始人), Jim Dukhovny, Constantine Kisly, Pavel Markin, and Oleg Petrov first thought of the idea in 2015. They got the idea from the movie Back to the Future and drew their first design on a napkin (餐巾纸). Their goal was clear: the car can drive on roads, run on electricity (电力), and take off straight up. In less than a year, they built a small model, and it helped them get money from investors (投资者).
Alef has two designs. One is the Model A, and the other is the Model Z, which is still being developed. On December 9, 2025, Alef started making the first Model A cars. These cars are built by hand using light objects. Each car will take months to complete. It has electric engines and fans, so it will take off without a runway. When flying, the car moves its body to a 90-degree angle. This allows the sides to act as wings. On the road, flying cars will be able to travel at a top speed (速度) of 40 km/h. In the air, they will fly at up to 177 km/h.
However, it will still be a long time before we see them in the sky, because they are only allowed for tests and research. Alef still needs to get safety permission (许可) for public roads and regular flights. Even so, over 3,500 people have already pre-ordered the cars at $300,000 each.

① drive on roads ② run on electricity ③ fly in the air ④ take off straight up
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④ D. ①③④
33. What can we infer from the passage
A. Investors helped the founders build a small model.
B. It will only take a short time to complete a flying car.
C. The founders got the idea from the movie Back to the Future.
D. Flying cars are able to drive faster in the air than on the road.
34. What problems are flying cars facing
A. Few people want to buy them. B. They are too expensive to buy.
C. They can’t fly in the sky for a long time. D. They don’t have the permission for free use.

Listen, the ocean is calling for our help. Can you hear that Many changes are happening in the ocean, and they all come from human activities.
One serious problem is the growing number of jellyfish (水母). They love warm water. And the number of them is rising because the weather is becoming warmer. Sometimes they gather in large groups and eat fish, which causes seals (海豹) to have less food. This shows that all things in nature depend on each other, and what we do has an influence on all living things.
Another worrying change is happening to coral reefs (珊瑚礁). Many sea animals need clean and warm water to live. But when the water gets too hot or dirty, the coral reefs turn white and die. As a result, the colorful underwater world is becoming lifeless.
The ocean is also becoming dirtier than before. People throw too much waste into the water. The waste is often seen as food by sea animals. Among them, turtles (海龟) are especially in danger because they sometimes eat plastic (塑料) bags, thinking they’re jellyfish, their favorite food. This mistake can kill them.
But there’s good news. Everyone can help! Here are some simple ways to protect the ocean. For example, we can pick up rubbish near the ocean. At the same time, don’t throw rubbish into the ocean, especially plastic bottles. What’s more, we can use reusable shopping bags instead of plastic ones. Most importantly, never buy the gifts made from sea animals.

When people watch movies, they often care about what to see. However, what to hear is also very important. The voices of the characters help to bring them to life. Lu Yanting, 38, is the voice actor for little Ne Zha in the movie Ne Zha 2. She uses her voice to create a strong Ne Zha who fights against his fate (命运).
“Dubbing (配音) is a lot like acting,” says Lu. “Voice actors get the story first. After reading it, they have their own understanding of the story and characters. During dubbing, Lu needed to show the character’s feelings. She must match her voice with the scenes. The director was very important. He explained the whole story to me carefully. With his help, I could give a wonderful performance.”
Lu believes it is necessary to keep learning. “We need to understand life better, gain more experience, and develop views. Then, we can successfully act out different roles.” Lu is thankful to be part of this movie. She can use everything she has learned. But she also thinks that getting such a chance needs some luck. It is always hard to find roles that fit her well. “ You can’t depend on just one perfect role in your career (职业).” She adds, “As a voice actor, you need to be able to create different new roles.”
For young people who want to become voice actors, Lu says, “If you truly love it, give your all to it. You may not know what the future holds, but you can make the most of the present.” Using a line from Ne Zha 1, she says, “Who you are is only for you to decide.”
