It was a sunny Friday morning in Socastee, as 80-year-old John Farr put on his bicycle gear (装备) outside Habitat for Humanity of Horry County ReStore.
“Here we are just cranking it out,” laughed Farr, as he prepared for his 800-mile Bike 2 Build ride. “Spending the whole day outside like that is really a nice experience.” This was his 20th and the longest ride for Habitat for Humanity.
Farr traveled from his hometown to Chicago in the past, as well as other shorter rides. His wife Catherine said he even rode coast to coast, but he was accompanied by a friend. For this journey, Farr was riding alone. He said it was important to spread awareness for the organization. “I think a family that lives in a decent home has a crack at a better life,” said Farr. “I think Habitat for Humanity is a real foundation-building organization, a real contributor to the welfare of our nation.”
Farr’s 14-day trip started in Horry County on Friday morning. For his first leg, he planned about 70 miles daily. He said he hoped to average about 10 miles for each hour he was pedaling (踩踏板). “I’m really into wildlife,” said Farr. “So I’m looking for birds. I’ll stop for road kill. I’m sort of a wacky (古怪的) person, maybe.”
He said it took a few days to get settled on his bike. He said bicycling away from roads with heavy traffic could be difficult. But it was a task he was willing to take on, as he tried to inspire others. “I’m certainly not superhuman or anything. I’ve had a hip replacement. I’ve had heart surgery. I’ve had prostate cancer,” explained Farr.
Starting as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in his hometown of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, he’s now president of his chapter. Farr raised more than $23, 000 last year and more than $100, 000 in his two-decade rides.

Dreams can indeed be emotional and sometimes scary. But dreams can be enjoyable, too — maybe you’ve had a dream so delightful that you were disappointed to wake up and realize it wasn’t reality.
Are the images in your dreams in vivid color Perhaps you had a dream about playing Candy Crush and can remember the brightly colored red, purple and yellow candies falling like a cascade (瀑布) in your dream.
As a neuroscientist who studies sleep, I can tell you that about 70% to 80% of people report dreaming in color, as opposed to those whose dreams are just in shades of black and white. But this estimate may be low, because scientists can’t actually see what a dreamer sees. There’s no advanced technology showing them exactly what’s happening in a dreamer’s mind. Instead, they have to rely on what dreamers remember about their dreams.
To study dreams, researchers ask people to sleep in laboratories, and they simply wake them while they’re dreaming and then ask them what they were just thinking about. It’s pretty simple science, but it works.
How do scientists know when people are dreaming Although dreams can occur in any sleep stage, research has long shown that dreams are most likely to occur during rapid eye movement sleep, or REM sleep.
Scientists can identify REM by the electrical activity on your scalp (头皮) and your eye movements. They do this by using an electroencephalogram, which uses several small electrodes (电极) placed directly on the scalp to measure brain activity. During REM sleep, the dreamer’s eyes move back and forth repeatedly. This likely means they’re scanning — that is, looking around in their dream.
That’s when dream researchers wake up their participants. Dreams are really tricky to study because they disappear so quickly. So instead of asking participants to remember a dream — even one they were having a moment ago — we ask them what they were just “thinking”. Dreamers don’t have time to think or reflect; they just respond — before the dream is lost.

Every year, monarch butterflies travel thousands of kilometers as they migrate from Canada to Mexico in the fall, just to head back north again in the spring. This is possible thanks to the natural structure of their wings, which makes them lightweight, flexible, and excellent at flying — a unique combination the researchers wanted to copy in their robots.
Despite their small size, the natural design of monarch butterfly wings is very complex, evolving to stand extremely long journeys. One of the fundamental principles that make these wings so efficient during flight is that they don’t just create thrust (推力) by actively moving, but also by passively bending their natural shape, which allows them to ‘glide’ without spending additional energy.
To achieve this, the research team, led by Oliver Gutfleisch at TU Darmstadt, built the robotic butterfly wings by putting magnetic particles (磁性粒子) into a flexible plastic material. “The wings are made from a magnetic composite material that responds to external magnetic fields,” said Kilian Schāfer, co-author of the study. “When a magnetic field is applied, the magnetic particles cause the wings to bend, copying the movement of real butterfly wings.”
Using 3D printing, the researchers created 12 different wing designs with different sizes to test their behavior using a mix of experimental tests and computer simulations. Some of the designs also recreated vein (翅脉) patterns in their design that copied those found in monarch butterfly wings to test if these structures could improve their performance. What they found was that larger wings — about 28 mm long — with vein patterns were less rigid and easier to bend, making them better at adapting their shape during flight.
In their tests, the scientists also found that butterflies that were 3D-printed using higher energy laser (激光) settings were thinner and better at bending. However, they were also more delicate and easily damaged. “The biggest challenge was creating thin, flexible structures with vein patterns that were still functional while being less than a millimeter thick,” said Schāfer. “Ensuring that these features were preserved required fine-tuning 3Dprinting process, particularly the laser energy settings, to achieve the desired mechanical properties.”
