Chinese scientists have designed “NeuroWorm”, an intelligent microfiber capable of traveling freely within the body, demonstrated through lab tests on mice, providing insights into brain-machine interfaces (接口) and neural regulation (神经调节) in treating certain diseases. But further studies are still needed before it enters clinical application formally.
Tests revealed that the microfiber, about 200 micrometers in width and as thin as two human hairs, can monitor neural electrical signals and minute tissue deformations across large areas of the body or brain while moving, unlike similar materials from other studies that remain fixed in one location. “Unlike traditional Parkinson’s disease treatments that require implanting multiple electrodes (电极) in different brain regions, the ‘NeuroWorm’ is planted once and can go freely through various affected areas, monitoring neural electrical signals and even relieving symptoms through electrical stimulation,” said Yan Wei, a lead scientist on the team. For disabled patients, this technology is equally beneficial.
Inspired by the body structure of earthworms, which allows for distributed sensory and motion control, the research team led by Yan, created the “NeuroWorm”. This dynamic, soft, and stretchable microfiber, built in 60 nano-level micro sensors — 15 times the number found in traditional methods, serves as a neural interface, offering significant advantages over traditional neural interface devices that are static and require invasive procedures for repositioning. This allows for precise multi-point monitoring of neural electrical and biomechanical signals while traveling within the body after being implanted in the muscle or the brain of mice, said Yan.
Furthermore, the fiber possesses excellent performance in softness. Long-term experiments on mice showed high biocompatibility (生物相容性), with the microfiber remaining in muscles for up to 13 months without adverse reactions, the researchers said.
“A key innovation lies in the fiber’s ability to travel within the body. Using an open magnetic control strategy, we achieved initial controlled movement and steering within tissues, allowing the fiber to move like an earthworm through soil and record neural signals all along the path without the need for additional surgeries,” said Yan.
4.Where is “NeuroWorm” currently at in its progress
A.The hot-selling stage. B.The experimental stage.
C.The conceptual phase. D.The clinical application phase.
5.What is the most striking feature about “NeuroWorm” according to paragraph 2
A.Its mobility. B.Its recyclability. C.Its reliability. D.Its affordability.
6.What can be learned from paragraph 3
A.The microfiber bridges neural cells. B.Old neural devices prove ineffective.
C.Nature can inspire innovation. D.The microfiber requires repositioning.
7.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.NeuroWorm: The End of Brain Surgery B.NeuroWorm: Controllable Neural Interface
C.Neural Regulation: Novel Cure for Diseases D.Fixed Electrodes: Tool for Neural Monitoring

Based on a three-year-long study on millions of phones in ninety-eight countries, researchers found the global network of Android smartphones makes a useful earthquake early warning system, which can detect (探测) earthquakes and give users valuable seconds to act before the shaking starts.
Many countries have used traditional earthquake early warning systems with networks of earthquake sensors (感应器) to detect quakes and issue warnings across the affected area. Building such networks is expensive, and many areas where earthquakes are common do not have them. What they do have, however, are smartphones, which have built-in movement sensors. Using Android smartphones — which account for 70% of the global smartphone market — researchers developed the Android Earthquake Alert (AEA) system. “Although AEA is not always as timely as the traditional network detection, it can still detect small shaking during strong earthquakes,” says Allen, the leader of the study.
Working in the same way as traditional earthquake detection systems, the AEA system will transmit two types of alerts (警报) to the phone after detecting an earthquake. For earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or higher, the system sends “Take Action” alerts to users. These alerts are designed to draw users’ attention immediately and remind them to take protective actions. It also delivers “Be aware” alerts to areas expected to experience a shaking of magnitude 3 or 4.
To test how effective these alerts were, the researchers used search engines to collect voluntary answers. Results from around 15.5 million people showed that 87% of them did indeed experience shaking, with 36% receiving the alert before the ground began to move, 28% during and 23% after.
Now, the researchers are focused on improving the AEA system. “We think that we can continue to improve the quality of earthquake detection, and also improve on our strategies to deliver effective alerts.” says Allen. In the future, Allen and his teammates hope to use the same information to produce other disaster-reducing tools. Maps of ground shaking, for example, could help the emergency rescue after an earthquake.
8.What is AEA’s advantage over the traditional earthquake early warning system
A.It uses more advanced sensors. B.It is cheaper and more widely accessible.
C.It can prevent earthquakes from happening. D.It is more exact in detecting every small quake.
9.Which word can replace the underlined word “transmit” in paragraph 3
A.Send. B.Control. C.Train. D.Trust.
10.What is the current focus of the researchers
A.Stop AEA research and switch to new projects. B.Sell the AEA system to smartphone companies.
C.Raise detection quality and improve alert delivery. D.Replace all traditional detection systems with AEA.
11.Which could be a suitable title for the text
A.Worldwide Research on Smartphones B.How to Protect Yourself in Earthquakes
C.The Disadvantages of Traditional Sensors D.Android Phones: New Earthquake Early Warning System

A rocket built by students at the University of Southern California (USC) Rocket Propulsion Lab (RPL) has broken a 20-year record. Aftershock Ⅱ, launched from Nevada’s Black Rock Desert on October 20, 2024, reached an altitude (高度) of 470,000 feet. This was 90,000 feet higher than the previous amateur rocket altitude record of 380,000 feet. The record was set by the Civilian Space Exploration Team’s GoFast rocket in 2004.
The 14-foot tall Aftershock Ⅱ broke the sound barrier within two seconds of launch. It reached a maximum speed of 3,600 mph — 5.5 times the speed of sound — just 19 seconds after launch. This slightly exceeded the speed record set by GoFast in 2004. While its engine burned out shortly after launch, Aftershock Ⅱ continued its ascent. It left the Earth’s atmosphere in about 85 seconds after launch and reached its peak altitude in 92 seconds. At this point, the rocket’s nose cone detached and deployed its parachute (降落伞) for a safe landing in the desert. Here, the eagerly waiting student scientists got it back.
Aftershock Ⅱ’s success can largely be credited to technological innovations developed by the 100-person team at RPL. The rocket’s titanium-coated (钛涂层的) fins and a new heat-resistant paint enabled it to endure the extreme temperatures generated at high speeds. Student-designed computer systems allowed real-time rocket position tracking and sent back live data throughout the flight.
“This was probably the coolest thing we’ve gotten the opportunity to do. We’re just college students who have homework, dishes and groceries to do, and we just sent a rocket to space. We broke the world record and sent a rocket higher than anyone ever has,” said Operations Lead Jayna Rvbner.
RPL was founded in 2005 to launch student-designed and built rockets into space. The student-led group made history in 2019 when their Traveler Ⅳ rocket became the first student-built rocket to cross the Kármán line. This imaginary line, 328,083 feet above the Earth’s surface, marks the internationally recognized edge of space.
12.Which of the following best describes Aftershock Ⅱ
A.The highest-flying civilian-built rocket. B.The first entirely student-designed rocket.
C.The fastest commercially-launched rocket. D.The most technologically advanced rocket.
13.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.The performance of GoFast rocket. B.The flight details of Aftershock Ⅱ.
C.The major achievements of USCRL. D.The design features of Aftershock Ⅱ.
14.What can be inferred from Rvbner’s words
A.The launch earned widespread recognition. B.Aftershock Ⅱ raised students’ interest in rocketry.
C.Students took great pride in their accomplishments. D.GoFast’s success inspired technological innovation.
15.What is the purpose of the last paragraph
A.To provide some advice for readers. B.To add some background information.
C.To summarize the previous paragraphs. D.To introduce a new topic for discussion.
第二节 七选五 (根据短文内容,选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。其中有两项为多余选项。).
My daughter had just returned from a school camp where smart phones were banned, and she couldn’t stop talking about how peaceful it felt. “You should try it, Mom,” she said. “Just a month. See what happens.” 16
I bought a basic phone that could only call and text, and put my smart phone in a drawer. The first few days were difficult. I reached for my phone constantly — waiting for coffee, sitting at a red light, standing in line at the grocery store. 17 I felt empty, oddly anxious. What was I supposed to do with these moments
Slowly, I started to figure it out. 18 For example, the way light fell through the windows in my kitchen, the sound of birds outside my office, the faces of strangers on the street. I also had conversations — real ones — with people I would otherwise have ignored while scrolling.
The month ended, and I took my smart phone from the drawer. 19 That’s not realistic, and it’s not the point. The point is to use it intentionally rather than habitually. Therefore, I made changes. I turned off all unnecessary alerts. I deleted social media apps from my home screen. Small things, but they add up.
20 I learned that boredom is not an emergency. Those empty moments — waiting, walking, sitting — are not problems to be solved. They are opportunities to be present. They are the spaces where creativity happens, where thoughts form, where we connect with ourselves and the world around us.
A.I noticed things I had been missing for years.
B.Whether to give it a try or not became a question.
C.I didn’t throw it away or promise to give it up forever.
D.I missed the happy moments I had experienced before.
E.I found only the phone’s tiny screen and limited functions.
F.More important than the changes, though, is what I learned.
G.I laughed it off at first but decided to go without mine for a month.

二、语法填空 (共 10 小题,每小题 1.5 分,共 15 分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Imagine feeding nearly one-fifth of the world’s population with less than one-tenth of its farmable land. That’s the challenge facing Chinese agriculture today, and climate change, which has brought increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, is making it even 36 (tough). Traditional farming methods that 37 (pass) down through generations are no longer enough.
The secret to meeting this challenge Innovation at every level. Today’s agricultural scientists look on seeds 38 the “microchips” of farming — small but 39 (incredible) powerful tools that can make or break food security. In research labs across the country, teams are working around the clock 40 (develop) new crop varieties capable of surviving droughts, resisting pests, and producing higher 41 (yield) even in harsh conditions.
But seed technology is only part of 42 story. Step onto a modern farm and you’ll find yourself in what looks more like a technology hub than a traditional field. Drones equipped with advanced cameras fly overhead, 43 (capture) detailed images that reveal which plants need water and which ones are fighting off diseases. Meanwhile, automated machines guided by GPS systems plant and harvest with precision. Farmers who once 44 (rely) purely on experience now make decisions based on real-time data streaming from sensors buried deep in the soil.
This technological revolution represents a fundamental shift in what we think of farming. It’s no longer just about how much you can grow, but 45 smartly you can grow it. As one farmer recently put it, “We’re not just growing crops anymore — we’re growing solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems.”

47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Winston Sinclair’s quiet evening was interrupted by a squat grey robot at his door. The machine delivered an apology video from Karl Anderson, a former colleague who sabotaged Winston’s job application at Future Industries nine years prior. Karl confessed to spreading rumors that Winston was “impossible to work with,” driven by fear of competition.
Initially furious—“THAT SCOUNDREL!”—Winston recalled his dashed career hopes. Yet his wife Elizabeth reminded him: missing that job led him to IndustriCorp, where they met, married, and had their daughter Rachel. “Things worked out just fine,” she said. Winston accepted Karl’s apology, realizing life’s unexpected blessings.
The robot then demanded Winston record his own apology, calibrated to match Karl’s in “value.” His trivial confessions—scratching a hover-bike, childhood theft—were rejected as “insufficient.” Finally, Winston recalled breaking Cherisse’s heart at 22. The robot approved: “Value is sufficient.”
As Winston apologized for fleeing love out of fear, he felt “lighter,” mirroring Karl’s catharsis. The robot departed to deliver both messages. Watching it vanish into the night, Winston—inspired—declared: “I’m going to build a robot.”
This encounter bridged past regrets and present gratitude. Winston’s journey from resentment to forgiveness, and his resolve to create his own reconciling machine, underscored the transformative power of accountability and serendipity.

47. With tools scattered across the workbench, Winston stared at the blueprints of his homemade robot, determined to create a machine that could heal broken relationships. Winston’s robot, designed with emotional recognition algorithms guiding users to vulnerability over hollow apologies, emerged from nights soldering circuits. Testing staged a sandbox quarrel, the bot asking, “What hurt your heart ” sparked tearful reconciliation. Yet doubting machinery’s capacity for human messiness, he added a “silent listening” mode, inspired by Karl’s video resolving rage.
However, when he activated the robot for the first time, its screen flickered unexpectedly, displaying a familiar face from his past. Cherisse’s aged yet unmistakable features materialized, eyes filled with tears. The machine had tracked her down, cross-referencing Winston’s apology with her digital footprints. “Message pending delivery,” it intoned. Winston’s hands trembled. Before he could abort, Cherisse’s live response played: “I waited years to hear that.” Her voice softened. “But seeing you build this… maybe some fractures make room for better things.” The camera captured Winston’s stunned reflection beside Rachel’s crayon drawings, weaving past and present into a single frame of healing.
