On January 14, 2026, Chinese Go master Nie Weiping passed away at the age of 74. His death brought great sadness to the whole country, but his spirit will live on forever.
Nie Weiping was born in 1952. He started learning Go when he was a little boy. In the 1980s, the Chinese Go team was not as strong as the Japanese team. Japanese players were considered the best in the world at that time. However, Nie Weiping changed history. During the China-Japan Go duel (中日围棋擂台赛), he achieved an unbelievable 11-game winning streak (连胜). He beat several top Japanese players by himself and led the Chinese team to win the championship three times. This great success not only made him a national hero but also encouraged millions of Chinese people to learn Go. In 1988, he was given the title "Go Saint" (棋圣) by the country.
Even when he grew old, Nie didn't leave the Go world. He opened Go schools to train young players. Many of his students later became world champions. He was very open-minded. When AI technology appeared, some people worried that AI would destroy the game. But Nie actively embraced it. He told young players to learn from AI to improve their skills, while reminding them that human creativity is the most important.
