Elephants shouldn’t be in captivity(圈养)
Elephants are really fantastic animals. We now have good reasons to believe that they are some of the most clever and social animals around. This makes us think about how we should take care of them.
In the past ten years, there have been stories about elephants with surprising skills. Scientists (科学家) have found that elephants are even cleverer than we thought before.
Elephants in the wild show their intelligence (智慧) in many ways. For example, they remember where water holes (坑) are and go back there to drink later. They can use their trunks to get food and water in hard-to-reach places. They might even know who they are.
New studies tell us that wild elephants have many other special social skills.
They talk to each other in different ways and make decisions together. They work together to solve problems. Also, elephants are very helpful to each other. Mothers and children stay together in families. They take care of each other’s babies and protect the young ones. What’s more, elephants have strong friendships. They are sad when one of them dies. When one elephant is sad, others try to make it happy. When they succeed (成功), they celebrate together.
Some scientists think elephants shouldn’t be in captivity. Zoos can’t give them the right living environment like the wild. Their great intelligence means they need more space. We should think about setting them free. Keeping such clever animals in captivity is wrong. In the future, we might look back and be surprised that we ever did this.

Ron Clark is the writer of The Essential 55, a book about teaching students the rules for life. In 2000, he was named Disney’s American Teacher of the Year. He helped a lot of students who had a hard time and made a big difference in their lives.
Clark started teaching at a primary school in North Carolina, the USA.When he started teaching the fifth grade’s students, he faced many challenges (挑战) . The kids weren’t into learning and often played or slept in class. To help them, Clark wrote 55 rules. Soon, the students started to get better in school and in life. They learnt to love others and to be the best of themselves.
Some Rules from The Essential 55Rule 1: Look people in the eye when you talk to them. Rule 2: Do your homework every night. Rule 3: If someone asks you a question, ask one back. Rule 4: Learn the names of other teachers and say hello. Rule 5: Always say “thank you” when someone gives you something.
Clark didn’t find it difficult to teach his students these rules. He explained each rule and then the students did role-plays. The first week is for practice (实践) . If they forgot a rule, he helped them remember. Clark hoped when his students left this classroom, they could have skills that would help them for the rest of their lives.

Hi, I’m Fu Zai, a 6 -month- old corgi (柯基). I’m China’s first corgi police dog! Some people think I can’t be a great police dog because of my short legs. But I’m here to show they are wrong!
I was a pet dog before. When I was 2 months old, one day while I was playing with my owner in the park, a policeman saw me and thought I was a gifted (有天赋的) police dog. Then, I started my training.
