Sofia Reznikova is a 31-year-old visitor from Russia. She was amazed by the technology in China. She first knew about China’s 240-hour visa-free (免签) policy online. After watching videos about traveling in China, she became more interested in Chinese technology.
In June, Reznikova visited Guangzhou and Shenzhen to see China herself. She really liked the robot helpers at the hotel. “ Ordering food was fun because a cute robot brought my meal to my door,” Reznikova said. The workers just put the food into the robot’s “stomach” and type in the room number. The robot can take the lift itself and go to the right room. “This service saves workers’ time. It is also safer because guests don’t have to meet anyone,” Reznikova said. She also enjoyed the robot’s friendly words like, “Hello! Your meal has arrived!” She thought it was funny. The robot made her stay more enjoyable.
Reznikova also experienced Augmented Reality (AR) at the Chimelong Safari Park (长隆野生动物世界) in Guangzhou. There, she used the “Chimelong AR Zoo” on her phone. “The app uses AR to let visitors interact (互动) with the park’s wildlife in a new way,” she said.
Using the app, she could see virtual (虚拟的) animals guide her. “It was interesting. The app made sure I didn’t miss any parts of the park,” she said. As she walked through the park, the app told her fun facts about each animal she met.
“I felt a sense of comfort during my trip in China,” Reznikova said.

When it comes to mobile payment in China the QR code (二维码) is king. However, Alipay is trying to change that with Tap!, a new payment way. With Tap!, shoppers no longer need to scan (扫描) a QR code. They simply place their phone close to a tiny machine and the payment goes through quickly. It sounds like magic, right The secret here lies in a technology called NFC, or near field communication.
NFC is built on magnetic field induction (磁场感应). When two devices (设备) with NFC are near each other, a magnetic field is created. This magnetic field helps the devices exchange information quickly and easily. Imagine two devices telling secrets to each other, but only when they’re super close. The “language” they use is in radio waves.
NFC technology has been around for many years. Today, the technology has been used widely in our daily life. You can use a phone with an NFC chip to open the door of your apartment building. It can also be used to send information between devices, like sharing a photo or a video.
Compared with scanning a QR code, “tap and go” is much more convenient. NFC technology is also safer than QR codes. That’s because the payment by NFC uses a special code that only your bank can read.
In fact, experts don’t expect NFC and QR codes to be rivals. Instead, they can help perfect each other. “When paying at the door of a parking lot, for example, QR codes are better,” said Liu Yuanju, a researcher. “QR codes can be used from far away, while NFC only works when the phone is close to a payment machine,” Liu adds.
