WHY DO WE CELEBRATE FESTIVALS?
Festivals are celebrated all around the world. They have a wide range① of origins②, such as the seasons of the year, religions③, famous figures④, and important events.Every festival has its different customs and unique charms⑤.However,[1] no matter how different they may seem, all over the world, the spirit of sharing joy⑥, gratitude⑦, love, or peace is common in all festivals.
Of all the traditional festivals, the harvest⑧ festival can be found in almost every culture.[2]This important agricultural⑨ festival takes place after all the crops⑩ have been gathered in. People celebrate to show that they are grateful for the year’s supply of food.In ancient Egypt, the harvest festival was celebrated during the springtime — the Egyptian harvest season. It featured a parade and a great feast with music, dancing, and sports.Today, in some European countries, people decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and get together to celebrate over a meal.During the Mid-Autumn Festival in China, families gather to admire the shining moon and enjoy delicious mooncakes.
Customs play a significant role in festivals, but sometimes they can change over time. With the development of modern society and the spread of new ideas, some traditions may fade away and others may be established. One example is the typical Chinese Spring Festival custom of lighting firecrackers to drive away the evil spirits and celebrate the new year.Nowadays, many big cities have given up this custom in order to avoid air pollution.[3]Another example is Halloween, which slowly became an exciting festival for children, in spite of its religious origins.
[4]Festivals are becoming more and more commercial , with businesses taking advantage of the celebrations.Online shopping websites and social media apps have made it much easier for the public to spend more on gifts for their loved ones.Although some believe festivals should not be commercialised , others believe the increase in spending is good for the economy and public happiness.
Festivals are an important part of society. They reflect people’s wishes, beliefs , faiths , and attitudes towards life. They are occasions that allow us to relax and enjoy life, and forget about our work for a little while. They help us understand where we came from, who we are, and what to appreciate. And if you study festivals carefully, you may be surprised to find that different cultures actually have a lot in common after all.
  [4]句中使用了with复合结构,即“with+宾语+宾语补足语”;动词-ing短语taking advantage of the celebrations作宾语补足语,用于补充说明宾语businesses的情况。

Stallone was so poor at one point that he sold his wife’s jewellery. He ended up becoming homeless, sleeping in a bus station, and struggled to afford food.He even managed to get a small amount of money in his pocket by selling his dog for $25.
Soon after, Stallone decided to take his career into his own hands and write a movie role for himself. After watching a boxing match, Stallone wrote the script (脚本) for Rocky very quickly, and soon a studio wanted to buy the screenplay to make.
Stallone was offered $125,000 for the Rocky script, but the trouble for the studio was that Stallone wanted to star in the movie.Stallone was penniless, but he still turned down $125,000 in order to chase his dream.
After being refused on the idea that he “looked and talked funny”, Stallone was then offered $250,000 for the screenplay. He refused unless he could star.He was then offered $350,000.Again he refused.
The studio wanted this screenplay so badly, but was not willing to risk the money on this unknown actor.Stallone stayed strong, and eventually the studio gave him a small amount for the script and let him star.
With his fortunes up, Stallone went to buy back his dog, but the guy he sold it to would not sell him back.Stallone offered the man $1,000 for the dog, but the man refused.Eventually, the man accepted $15,000 for the dog.
And this is why Stallone has deserved his success and why he is on this list of the best inspiring stories — because he was willing to do whatever it takes to realise his dreams.

As my car was inching forward, I saw her.She was a young, thin woman with black skin. She was holding up a cardboard sign that read:“Homeless. Please Help!” I watched as car after car drove past her while their drivers averted (移开) their eyes.
As I came closer, my better angels whispered in my ear and I quickly grabbed my wallet and pulled out the little cash I had left.I stopped next to her, rolled down my window, and quickly put it in her hand. She looked at me with a small, sad smile and whispered “Thank You” before the car behind me forced me to drive on.I drove away saying a prayer for her and hoping that I had helped her even a little.

You might think it’s absurd (and maybe it is), but Oxford English Dictionary (OED) editors recently revealed that “run” has indeed become the single word with the most potential meanings in all of English, boasting no fewer than 645 different usage cases for the verb form alone. How could three little letters be responsible for so much meaning?
Context is everything.Think about it: When you run a fever, for example, those three letters have a very different meaning than when you run a bath to treat it.You’d do things differently if you ran the world.Maybe you should run for office.
It bears mentioning that “run” didn’t always have the run of the dictionary. When the OED’s first edition came out in 1928 (after 70 years of editorial research), the longest entry belonged to another three-letter juggernaut:“set.” Even today, the print edition of the OED contains some 200 meanings, beginning with “put, lay, or stand (something) in a specified place or position”, and continuing on for about 32 pages.
So what happened? Why is “run” suddenly the Swiss Army Knife of verbs? British author Simon Winchester fancies it “a feature of our more energetic and frantic times”, making words like “set” seem almost boring and passive by comparison.“Run” appears to have earned some major lift during the boom of the Industrial Revolution, when all manner of mechanized innovation adopted it as their verb of choice.“Machines run, clocks run, computers run—there are all of those (meanings) which began in the middle of the 19th century,” Winchester says.
So, ready to run through the whole list of definitions? Alas, to read all 645 meanings you’ll have to wait for the next edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. The print run is expected in 2037.

To understand how much we rely on ecosystem services, imagine a world where humans are the only species — perhaps in a spaceship far from the Earth.
There are no plants releasing oxygen, so you have to engineer a way to make it yourself. So straight away you need a chemical processing plant on board your ship. That same plant will have to make water too.
There is also nothing to eat, so you must artificially make food. You could synthesise (人工合成) chemicals like sugars and fats, but making it delicious would be extremely hard.As of 2015, we can’t even make an artificial burger that everyone finds convincing.
Let’s not even get started on the microorganisms (微生物) living in your gut, many of which are beneficial. The point is that, while we could in theory do all these things artificially, it is far easier to let the existing wildlife do them for us.
The scale of these ecosystem services, when you add them up, turns out to be extraordinarily large.
In 1997, ecologist Robert Costanza and his colleagues estimated that the ecosystem provides services worth around $33 trillion a year. For comparison, they noted that the entire global economy at the time produced around $18 trillion a year.
Five years later, the team took the argument a step further by asking how much we would gain by conserving biodiversity. They concluded that the benefits would outweigh the costs by a factor of 100.In other words, conserving nature is an unbelievably good investment.
By contrast, letting species decline and go extinct looks like a bad move.A 2010 study concluded that unchecked species loss would wipe 18% off global economic output by 2050.
You may perhaps be feeling that all this talk of economics and growth is strange. It’s all rather cold and heartless, without any of the love for the natural world that we were talking about earlier.Well, many environmentalists feel the same way.

Dear Jack,
I’m writing to tell you something about China’s Winter Solstice.Winter Solstice is one of the 24 solar terms of the year in China. And eating jiaozi, or Chinese dumplings, is a tradition in North China.
On Winter Solstice this year, as soon as I went back home after school, I saw my parents preparing for materials for jiaozi in the kitchen. Then I joined their effort, which included making the fillings, rolling jiaozi wrappers, and making jiaozi.Having finished all the processes, we began to enjoy our fruit of labour. The jiaozi we made turned out to be extremely delicious and we all ate to our heart’s content.
Hope you’ll come to China to experience China’s Winter Solstice together with us!

Middle school was a difficult time for me.I felt ugly and kids teased me every day, which only made me upset.
The friends I’d had for many years claimed I’d changed and wouldn’t hang out with me anymore. Then a funny thing happened. One of the “cool” kids started inviting me to hang out.Her name was Dina, and she invited me to parties and over to her house.Dina may have seen that I needed a friend.Or maybe she just thought I was nice.Either way, when kids teased me about being ugly, she told me they were crazy.
Middle school graduation was approaching and I couldn’t wait.I knew there was a chance that high school might be as horrible as middle school, but maybe it would get me away from all the bad memories of middle school.
Unexpectedly, the day we were taking graduation pictures turned out to be a life-changing moment for me.I came to school like I always did, and I was definitely not wearing make-up, although many of the girls were.Make-up was forbidden at my house until I reached high school, and I didn’t think much of it — that was who I was. That was who I thought I would always be.
I was getting ready for the photographer when Dina grabbed me.She laughed and said,“Not like that, you’re not!” dragging me into the girl’s bathroom.Dina and her friends pulled out some supplies and started giving me a makeover (装扮).They changed my hair, put make-up on me, and took away my oversized glasses.
I couldn’t see how I looked, but they said I looked great and I was just hoping it wasn’t all a big joke.I let them lead me to where I had to stand for the pictures, hoping the photographer would tell me if I looked like a clown or something. The flash went off and Dina gave me back my glasses.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
When I got home that day, my mother was pretty upset about the make-up.

A few weeks later, the pictures came back from the photographer.

When I got home that day, my mother was pretty upset about the make-up.She yelled at me for a while and told me that I didn’t look like myself. She was so angry that she said something unpleasant.“Have you forgotten that make-up is forbidden at our house? Remove it and wash your face at once!” said my mother. However, I didn’t care about what she said.I didn’t want to look like my old self.I didn’t want to be my old self.
A few weeks later, the pictures came back from the photographer. They did look great, and I looked like a new, happier person.I was surprised to see that I looked pretty and felt glad that I could now look back on middle school with one really good memory.I will always be grateful to Dina for what she did for me.She helped to bring me out of my shell and discover a better version of myself.

M:Hey, Sarah! This year I’m going to the rock festival for all three days!
W:Oh, lucky you, Leo! Are you going with your cousin again?
M:Not this year.My brother has promised to take me there now.My sister’s too busy with her college work.
W:How will you get there?
M:We wanted to drive, but Dad said no.And it’s too far from the city for us to cycle there, but there are special buses so we’ll take those.
W:What do you have to take with you?
M:Just a tent and clothes, really. We’ll need lots of water, but we’ll buy that and all our meals there.Hey! Come with us!
W:Maybe I will!
(Text 2)
M:Hey, Jenny, the Summer Festival is happening in the park.Don’t you know about it?
W:No.Is it a music festival?
M:Well, in fact, it’s a festival of food and art.
W:Oh, that sounds interesting. When does it begin?
M:On Friday.Last year it finished on Saturday, but this year the festival will run for three days, not two.
W:Great! I’d like to go.Is it open all day?
M:The gates open at eleven in the morning, and they stay open until midnight.
W:I don’t think I’ll stay that long. But I might go in the afternoon at about three o’clock and stay there until seven o’clock.
M:Well, please don’t come by car.The city center will be very busy.Take the bus.The No.15 goes to the park every 15 minutes.
W:Thanks a lot for reminding.
(Text 3)
W:The festival is great, isn’t it?
M:Yes.I have never seen such a good art festival before.
W:But I have a question — why is the festival only held in winter rather than in other seasons? I prefer it is held in summer.
M:Summer? It’s not a good idea.
W:Why not?
M:As there are many travelers in summer, if there is an art festival, the town will be crowded. But in winter, there aren’t enough travelers. For the town’s development, the government organises the festival.
W:It sounds more reasonable.
(Text 4)
W:Attention, please! There will be a free art exhibition on Friday 18, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 December in the Center Park of the town. The opening hours are from 10:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m., and there is an opening night only on Friday, from 7:30 p.m.to 10:00 p.m.Different from other exhibitions, this art exhibition is really a special one because the public will have the chance to watch the paintings which are from the town’s school. And all the paintings are created by the students.
It is great that the Festival is going to host a wonderful sound of music in the Main Exhibition Hall this year. This program aims to show some of the musical talents that we have in town.Everyone watching the performance had better not wear formal clothes, but fancy dress. And in the program, you will hear classical music, pop music, rock music and operas.

Henry:(entering the shop) I’d like to have a suit coat.
1st Clerk:(in a rude manner) See him there.(pointing to another clerk)
2nd Clerk:Ready-made suits? Downstairs.
Henry:(after going down some stairs) Can you show me a suit, please?
3rd Clerk:Yes, I can, sir. This way, please.Ah, here we are, the very thing you need.
1st Clerk:(pulling the 3rd clerk aside and whispering) Mr Reid says you’d better serve him quick and get him out quick!
3rd Clerk:I know what I’m doing.I’ve got eyes, haven’t I?
Henry:It’s a little too bright, isn’t it?
3rd Clerk:(looking at him with a frown) It’s all we have in your size.
Henry:Well, I suppose it ought to do for now.I’ll take it.
3rd Clerk:Good.Shall I put it in a box?
Henry:No.I’ll wear it.Oh, I’d rather not pay you now.I’d like to pay in a month. You see, I don’t have any small change.
3rd Clerk:(trying not to show he’s angry) I suppose a gentleman like you only carries very large bills.
Henry:Now, you shouldn’t judge people by their clothes.I just don’t want to cause you trouble with a large note.
3rd Clerk:It’s no trouble at all.
Henry:In that case, there’s no problem.(He gives the clerk the bank note. The clerk drops Henry’s coat. Then he folds the bill and slowly unfolds it again, as if looking at something he can’t believe is there.)
Owner:Well, what seems to be the trouble?
Henry:I’m just waiting for my change.
Owner:Give him his change, Todd.Get going ...(after getting the bank note from Todd) Would it ...could it be the one I saw in the papers last week? I remember thinking that never would I hold such a note as this ...(to Henry) Oh, take off this coat, sir.(to Todd) Go get the others, Todd! (to Henry again) Allow me, sir! This way, sir.
(in another part of the shop, where there is a wide range of options for Henry to choose from)
Henry:This is nice, but I really don’t need it.
Owner:Never mind.(with a broad smile) Oh, it’s perfect! It was made for some king but he’ll just have to wait. You’ll need many suits for many occasions.Yes, indeed you will.
Henry:Wait a minute.I only came here to get a suit coat to wear today.I dare not buy all these things. You would have to wait a long time to get paid.
Owner:A long time, sir? Why, you don’t have to worry about that!
3rd Clerk:Yes, we can wait forever!
Henry:Well, all right.I’ll take the suit coat for now and get the others later.
Owner:Fine, fine.Your address, sir?
Henry:I don’t have one.Er ...I’m moving.
Owner:Of course you are! That’s very normal! A busy man, I’m sure.
Step 2
Never mind.(with a broad smile)中broad一词形象生动地表达了店主满脸微笑、见钱眼开的态度。
This is nice, but I really don’t need it.
(1)Narrator的台词中holding the bank note in his hand为动词-ing短语作伴随状语,很好地描写了亨利对the bank note视若珍宝。
I’ve got eyes, haven’t I?
The clerk drops Henry’s coat. Then he folds the bill and slowly unfolds it again, as if looking at something he can’t believe is there.,此句中用drops来描写店员由于吃惊而产生的动作;slowly描写他对待大额钞票小心翼翼的动作;用as if 这样一个比拟来表达他内心的惊奇。

(2024·重庆高一下月考)A recent survey of wealthy investors by global financial services firm UBS found 70% of rich people don’t consider themselves wealthy and happy. However, people living in poverty are already accustomed to finding ways to improve their life satisfaction and wellbeing, which go beyond money and material possessions.
“Rich people, just as the less well-off, make upwards comparisons, rating their incomes, homes, investments or possessions against those of even richer friends and colleagues, rather than the rest of the population,” Jolanda Jetten explains, who is a professor in social psychology at the University of Queensland in Australia.
“In developing nations, while much smaller amounts of money can make a huge difference to a person’s lifestyle — helping them move beyond very basic needs — those who don’t have much can also be much less frightened of what they’ve got to lose,” she adds.
Krishna Prasad Timilsina, a mountain tour guide in Nepal, says he noted high levels of tenacity (坚韧) in the worst earthquake in his country’s history in 2015.It cost 8,000 lives and left thousands more homeless.Yet by making downwards comparisons, many residents were able to count their blessings.
“In the earthquake a lot of things got destroyed but people were still happy because if they had not lost their family ...it could have been a lot worse,” says the 36-year-old.
In fact, while Nepal’s main industry, tourism, suffered a lot after the tragedy, the country climbed eight spots to be ranked 99 out of 155 nations on the World Happiness Index in 2017, ahead of South Africa, Egypt and even neighbouring India, one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.
However, Timilsina doesn’t believe his homeland is completely immune (免疫的) to the kind of upwards comparisons that appear to be stressing out the rest of us.
“In the city, more educated people are more worried about life.My parents have no money but they are happier than me,” he laughs.

A.Comparison is the thief of joy.
B.He who laughs last laughs best.
C.Things can always become better.
D.Aim for the moon, and you may hit a star.

7.What made people in Nepal count their blessings after the earthquake?( )
A.Forgetting about the disaster.
B.Thinking of something worse.
C.Expecting something wonderful.
D.Remembering the good old days.
8.What can we learn about Nepal in 2017?( )

In a small Chinese village, a young girl named Mei lived with a deep love for painting. Her artworks, filled with lively colours, caught the beauty of her surroundings.Despite her talent, Mei often battled with self-doubt.She wondered if her skills were truly excellent or if she was just fortunate.
One day, Mei heard about a painting contest in the town called the “Sunlit Art Challenge”.Determined to prove herself and remove the doubts, Mei quickly signed up for it.The contest stirred a mix of excitement and nervousness in her.Mei spent countless hours perfecting her painting technique, pouring her heart and soul into her works.
For the contest, Mei painted a beautiful sunrise over the sea.The sun just started to rise above the horizon (地平线), its bright light beginning to shine over the ocean. The sun’s rays looked like golden light, spreading across the water and making it shine like a giant mirror. As the sun rose higher, it looked like a bright ball of fire, warming the sea and making the waves shine brightly. The sky changed colours too, from a soft blue to bright oranges, pinks and reds.It was like watching the day begin right there on her canvas (画布).Mei’s painting captured the peaceful yet lively scene of the sun’s first rays touching the vast ocean, symbolizing hope.
On the day of the contest, the village square was filled with excitement.Artists from near and far displayed their works.Mei set up her painting, feeling both proud and anxious. As the judges judged Mei’s painting, her heart raced with nervousness.Since their expressions were hard to read, Mei felt like her doubts were right that she wasn’t as good as she hoped.
When the host started to announce the winners, Mei listened with hope and curiosity. But sadly her name wasn’t called.Disappointment washed over her, and she forced a smile, applauding the winners. After the contest, Mei felt disheartened. She thought her painting had failed to impress anyone, and she lost her motivation to lift her brush. At that time, Mr Zhang, a villager, approached Mei.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Mr Zhang told Mei that Mei’s painting was excellent and moved him.

Mr Zhang’s recognition of Mei’s works renewed Mei’s interest in painting.

Mr Zhang’s recognition of Mei’s works renewed Mei’s interest in painting. She started to see her art not just as a means to achieve personal recognition, but as a tool for healing and bringing joy to others.Mei began to paint with a new purpose, creating artworks that depicted scenes of hope and beauty. Her art soon became a source of warmth and inspiration in her community.Through her journey, Mei discovered the true essence of her art.It was not just about creating beautiful scenes on canvas, but about touching hearts and warming souls.

(2024·浙江四校高一下联考)I don’t remember exactly what grade I was in when it happened. All I remember is that suddenly maths was no longer fun.Since the first grade I had always loved maths.I got 100 percent on almost every paper I did.All at once, we were doing something called multiplication (乘法) and I was no good at it.I struggled on my first few worksheets until the teacher gave us each a card.On it were written the multiplication tables.I stared at them and smiled. Here were all the answers I needed.I read them over and over until they became stuck in my head.On our next test I did great again.
I also began to notice how multiplication flowed through God’s creation.I saw how a tiny handful of seeds could produce a garden full of food.I saw how having two rabbits could soon give you twenty.I saw how tossing a little stone into a pond could produce ripples that seemed to go on forever.I also saw how a few caring words could heal a hurting heart. And I saw how a single act of loving-kindness could travel from person to person, heart to heart, and soul to soul until it circled the world.
The truth is that we are all multipliers (乘数) in this life. The only question is: what are we going to multiply? Are we going to multiply the fear, anger, and distrust that exist in this world?Or are we going to multiply the love, kindness, and forgiveness?I choose the latter and I hope you will do the same.
