Last month, our class decided to adopt a young ginkgo tree in the school park, and we called it “Our Class Tree”. It is a small sapling with thin branches and fresh green 11 , and it stands next to the stone bench near the playground. We made a small wooden card for it and wrote our class name on it, which made us feel very 12 .
We made a duty list to take care of it. Every day, two students are in charge of 13 it and checking its growth. Once, a strong wind broke one of its small branches, and we were all sad. We asked the gardener for help, and he taught us to use a small stick to 14 the broken branch and tie it with soft cloth. We did as he told us, and the branch grew well again a month later.
This experience let us know trees are 15 . We need to be gentle with them and pay more 16 to their changes. When we find pests on the leaves, we tell the gardener at once. We also stop other students from playing around the tree, as their running may hurt the 17 of the tree under the ground.
Now, our Class Tree is growing taller slowly. Every time we pass by it, we will stop to have a look. It has become a special symbol of our class. Taking care of it teaches us to be 18 , and we learn to think about the needs of other living things. We often talk about how it will grow into a big tree with thick 19 in the future, and we promise to protect it forever.
Trees are our silent friends. They give us so much, and it’s our duty to care for them. We believe that if everyone loves and protects trees, our world will be 20 and more beautiful.

(A)
Trees are the silent protectors of the Earth, and their value is far beyond our direct sight. First, they are the key fighters against greenhouse gases. Each tree can absorb carbon dioxide from the air and produce oxygen, which is essential for all living things on the planet. A single large tree can supply enough oxygen for four people per day. Second, forests are the living habitat for over 80 percent of the world’s land animals and plants. Birds build nests in their branches, small creatures live under the roots, and insects get food from the leaves.
Besides, trees offer great support to humans’ daily life. They provide wood for making furniture and paper, and various fruits and drinks come from them, like apples, tea and rubber. Trees also better our living environment, and they cool the air in summer and prevent the wind from blowing away the soil. Without trees, the Earth would become a hot and dry land. It’s no overstatement to say that human life can’t continue without trees. We need to spare no effort to protect them every day, not just on Tree Planting Day.

If you think trees are just lonely plants that can’t pass information, you are totally wrong. Scientists have found that trees have their own ways of communicating and helping each other. They don’t use words or sounds, but rely on their roots and a kind of underground fungus to share information and food. This underground network is just like a “tree Internet” in nature.
When a tree is in danger, such as being attacked by pests or lacking water, it will send chemical messages to other trees through this network. Other trees will then start to protect themselves. For example, they will make their leaves have an unpleasant taste so pests will refuse to eat them. Older and stronger trees also offer help to young and weak saplings. They will transport sugar and water to young trees through the roots, helping them grow better. What’s more, trees usually share resources with the same species, and some even give a hand to different types of trees nearby. Trees are never alone and they live in a big and warm family.
25. How do trees share information with each other in nature
A. By speaking different words and making sounds
B. By building a man-made “tree Internet” together
C. By using roots and a kind of underground fungus
D. By sending light messages to nearby trees directly
26. What will trees do to protect themselves after getting danger messages
A. They will stop growing for a long time to save energy.
B. They will make their leaves taste bad to drive pests away.
C. They will send more water and sugar to harmful pests.
D. They will break the underground network to keep safe.
27. What do older and stronger trees do to help young saplings
A. They build warm nests for young saplings on branches.
B. They teach young saplings how to fight against all pests.
C. They pass sugar and water to young saplings through roots.
D. They grow more leaves to cover young saplings from the sun.
28. Which of the following is true according to the passage
A. Trees will offer assistance to some different trees nearby.
B. Trees always live alone and never share resources with others.
C. The underground “tree Internet” is created by human beings.
D. Trees have no way to protect themselves when facing pests.
