What colour are polar bears You might think they are white. But actually, this is not true. According to The Washington Post, although polar bears usually look white, their fur isn’t white at all. And their skin (皮肤) is black!
Our hair gets its colour because of something called pigment (色素). Different kinds of pigments make different colours. But polar bears’ fur has no pigment. The fur is hollow (中空的). If you look at the hollow hairs with a microscope (显微镜), you will find they are transparent (透明的). When polar bears stand in the sun, the hollow hairs reflect (反射) the sun’s light. This makes them look white.
Some scientists think that the hollow hairs help polar bears look the same as the bright white snow, making it hard for their prey (猎物) to see them.

Animals get energy from the things that they eat. Some animals eat plants. Some eat animals. Some eat plants and animals. By looking at what eats what, we can learn how energy moves from one living thing to another.
How does energy move from animal to animal There are three levels (层次) in nature. At the first level, plants make their own food. Animals are usually in the second level. These are living things that eat things from the first level. Sometimes, they eat things from the second level, too. Some animals eat plants, and then another big animal eats them. Very small animals that you can’t even see are part of the third level.
We can imagine something like these three levels in the water, too. Some kinds of small marine animals use the sunlight to make food. Then another kind of small marine animal eats them.
