一、阅读理解
Last Saturday morning, I was walking to the sports center to exercise when I saw an old man sitting on the side of the road, looking very uncomfortable. He held his chest with one hand and looked pale. A few people were standing around him, but no one knew what to do. I ran up to him quickly and asked him what was wrong. He told me he had a bad chest pain and couldn’t walk. I remembered what my mom told me: if someone has a chest pain, we should call 120 first and then let him rest in a comfortable position.
I took out my phone and called 120 at once. While I was waiting for the ambulance, I asked the old man to lie down on the ground and put his head on my bag to make him comfortable. I also asked a passer-by to get a bottle of water for him. The old man thanked me again and again, and he said he was on his way to the park to do morning exercise when the pain started. He told me he usually exercised every morning, but he didn’t sleep well last night, so he felt a little weak today.
About ten minutes later, the ambulance arrived. The doctors checked the old man and said he was lucky to get help in time. They took him to the hospital, and I told them my phone number in case they needed more information. When I walked to the sports center, I was a little late for exercise, but I didn’t care. I felt very proud of myself because I helped someone in need.
This experience taught me that it’s important to learn some first-aid knowledge. It also made me realize that keeping a healthy lifestyle is not only for ourselves, but also for the people around us. The world is full of beautiful places waiting for you to explore. You used to promise yourself that you would travel somewhere when you had enough money and time. But scientific research has found that some of them won’t wait around forever because they will probably disappear one day.
The Dead Sea, known for being one of the saltiest places in the world, is in danger of disappearing. Tourists go to the lake to swim in its waters and spread its mineral-rich mud (富含矿物质的泥土) on their skin. However, the water level is dropping more than one metre every year because of nearby mining (采矿) projects and overuse of water. As a result, the Dead Sea is shrinking (缩小) so quickly that if nothing is done, it will be too late to save it by 2050.
Madagascar’s rainforests are also at risk of disappearing some day. They once covered 120,000 square kilometres, but only 20,000 square kilometres remain today because of tree cutting and fires. It is bad news for special animals that call this place home.
There are also many amazing places around the world that are at risk of being damaged. One of them is Machu Picchu. It has been in danger because of the city development and too many visitors. If we don’t take action to protect the ancient place, it could lose its historical value in the future.
Another place in danger is the Great Wall of China. Part of the wall, which dates back to the Ming Dynasty, is disappearing. For one thing, wind and rain have weathered (风化) it and plants growing in the wall have weakened it further. For another, in recent years, tourists have also begun exploring the less developed parts of the Great Wall, causing more damage.
If you want to visit any of these places, go before it’s too late!

In our daily life, accidents can happen anytime. Knowing some basic first aid can help us save lives and reduce pain. Here are some common situations and what you should do.
Cuts and Scrapes (擦伤)
If the cut is small, wash it with clean water and soap. Then put a bandage on it to keep it clean. If the cut is deep and bleeding a lot, press it with a clean cloth and raise it. Go to the hospital if the bleeding doesn’t stop.
Nosebleeds
When someone has a nosebleed, tell them to sit down and lean forward. Press the soft part of the nose for about 10 minutes. Tell them to breathe through the mouth. Don’t put the head back because the blood may go into the throat and cause choking.
Burns
For small burns, put the burned area under cool running water for at least 10 minutes. This helps stop the burning and reduces pain. Don’t put ice, oil or butter on the burn. Cover it with a clean, dry cloth. If the burn is large or serious, go to the hospital.
Choking (噎住)
If someone is choking and cannot speak or cough, stand behind them. Put your arms around their waist. Make a fist with one hand and place it above their navel (肚脐). Hold the fist with your other hand and push quickly upwards. This is called the Heimlich maneuver (海姆立克急救法). Do this until the object comes out.
Broken Bones
If you think someone has a broken bone, don’t move them. Keep the injured area still. Use a board or something hard to support it if possible. Call for help and wait for the doctor. Moving a broken bone can make it worse.
Remember, first aid is not a replacement for professional medical care. After giving first aid, always go to see a doctor if the injury is serious. Learning first aid can make a big difference. As the saying goes, “Better safe than sorry.”

Last month, my cousin Leo moved in with my family. It was his first time living away from home, and he was excited to learn to manage things by himself.

“It’s bleeding! What do we do ” Leo cried out in pain, his face pale. Seeing his fear snapped me out of my panic. I took a deep breath, and the first aid and safety lessons from school came back to me. “Stay calm! I know what to do,” I said, trying to sound confident.
We found a nearby public restroom. I held Leo’s arm under the running tap and washed the wound with soap for five minutes. Next, I used a clean cloth from my bag, pressing it firmly against the wound until the bleeding slowed. Then, I covered it with a bandage.

Last Saturday, I went to a coffee shop to meet a friend of mine. I got there ten minutes earlier. So I ordered a cup of coffee and sat by the window, watching people. There were some boys playing football on the street and a small boy was running after the ball as it rolled across the road.
Suddenly, there came a car. It was going very fast. When the driver saw the boy in his way, he braked (刹车) hard. But it was too late. The small boy lay on the street without moving. To everyone’s surprise, the car didn’t stop. It drove away quickly.
People ran to the boy. There was a cut on the boy’s head and he lost a lot of blood. The coffee shop owner telephoned the police. An ambulance (救护车) arrived and took the boy to the hospital. At 6:30 p.m., the police arrived and started questioning people. About half an hour later, they asked me to go to the police station because I saw everything. I gave them all the information I knew because I really wanted them to catch the driver. I didn’t leave the police station until 8:00 p.m. After that I went home because I didn’t want to talk to anyone.
The next day, the boy’s parents called me to say thanks. They also told me their boy was fine and the driver was at the police station now.
