课文原文
Last but not least
1 It was the last minute of the 2022 Beijing Marathon. However, 86-year-old Zhang Shun was still about 100 metres from the finishing line. People watched him move slowly. All of them held their breath. Would he make it
2 Zhang felt confident before the race. But he had a stomachache on the way. This made him fall behind. "Shall I take a rest or stop ”he thought. Either choice seemed fine for someone at his age. But Zhang chose neither of them. He just ran on. With people cheering, he finally crossed the finishing line!
3 Marathon running is Zhang's lifelong dream. "In 1989, I saw Beijing Marathon runners go past my home. I just wanted to become one of them," he said. For years, he trained every morning in the park. He filled over 30 notebooks with his running records. None of his family members worried or tried to stop him. They knew he enjoyed every moment.
4 Zhang Shun was the oldest and the slowest runner to finish the 2022 Beijing Marathon. But it didn't matter to him. For Zhang, running isn't about winning - it's about enjoying the sport itself. He has no plans to stop.“If possible, I will keep running.”

The 2024 Guangzhou Marathon attracted more than 30,000 runners from all over the country. Among the crowd, 82-year-old Chen Hua stood out not only because of his age, but also because he finished the full 42.195-kilometre marathon for the 15th time. What's more, he did it even though he had a slight knee pain during the race.
Chen's love for marathon began in 2008, when he watched the Beijing Olympic Games. He was deeply touched by the runners' spirit of never giving up. At that time, he was 66 years old and had never run a long-distance race before. Most people around him thought it was impossible for an old man like him to take up marathon. Some even advised him to give up the idea, saying it would be too hard for his body. But Chen didn't listen. He made a strict training plan for himself: he ran 5 kilometres every morning and 10 kilometres every weekend in the city's sports park. He also kept a detailed running diary, writing down his speed, distance and how his body felt after each run. Over the years, he has filled more than 40 diaries with his running stories and records.
His family has always been his strongest support. His wife prepares nutritious food for him every day to make sure he has enough energy for training. His son often runs with him on weekends and helps him check his physical condition. On the day of the 2024 Guangzhou Marathon, the whole family went to the track to cheer for him. At the 35-kilometre mark, Chen felt a sharp pain in his right knee. He slowed down and wanted to stop for a while, but when he saw his family waving and shouting his name, and heard the strangers around him saying "You are the best!", he kept going. He told himself, "I have come so far, and I can't give up now."
Finally, after 6 hours and 45 minutes, Chen Hua crossed the finishing line. The crowd burst into loud cheers and applause. When asked how he kept running for so many years, Chen said with a calm smile, "Marathon is not just a sport. It's a test of willpower. For me, running is a lifelong journey. It's not about how fast you run or how many races you win. It's about sticking to your goal and enjoying every step of the way. As long as my body can stand it, I will never stop running."
Chen's story has inspired many young people. A 22-year-old runner said, "Mr Chen is my hero. His spirit tells me that nothing is impossible if you have a dream and work hard for it. Age is just a number."
