Maddi Koch loves to spread her thoughts of a good movie. Her favorites are little-noted
movies with few stars but juicy concepts or dig-your-nails-into-the-sofa plot twists. On an online platform, where Koch has three million followers, her review of“What Happened to Monday”
about a world where seven identical sisters share a single identity, has drawn over 24 million views. “If I were to die tomorrow, I’d watch this tonight,” she said.
Koch, who is sometimes paid by film companies to promote their work, says she makes
videos to connect people and to spare them “the pain of arguing over finding a movie or not
knowing what you’re really looking for”. (Most of her videos, including the “What Happened to Monday” review, are not sponsored.) When asked, she’ll describe herself as a “random girl” who loves movies, a “content creator”, or, sure, even an “online opinion leader”. But one title that she would never use might be the most obvious: “critic”. “I just don’t see myself in that light,” she
said.
Koch, 22, is among dozens of personalities on the online platform, along with peers like
Straw Hat Goofy and Cinema.Joe, who reach millions of people by reviewing, analyzing or
promoting movies. Several earn enough on the platform — from posts sponsored by Hollywood
studios (many have taken a break from working with them since the actors’ strike), through one of
the platform’s revenue (收益) sharing programs or both — to make their passion for film a full-time job.
But the new school of film critic doesn’t see much ofitselfin the old one. And some
principles of the profession—such as providing judgments or making claims that go beyond one’s personal taste — are now considered abandoned and objectionable.
“When you read a critic’s review, it almost sounds like a computer wrote it,” said Cameron Kozak, 21, who calls himself a “movie reviewer” and has 1.5 million followers. “But when you
have someone on the platform who you watch every day and you know their voice and what they like, there’s something personal that people can connect to.”
4 .What kind of movies does Koch like best
A .Thrillers. B .Romances.
C .Comedies. D .Documentaries.
5 .How does Koch define herself
A .A critic. B .A teacher.
试卷第 5 页,共 13 页
C .An influencer. D .An advertiser.
6 .How do Straw Hat Goofy and Cinema.Joe make money
A .By ranking movies. B .By making films.
C .By getting online tips. D .By cooperating with companies.
7 .What’s Kozak’s attitude to critics’ reviews
A .Unclear. B .Disapproving.
C .Tolerant. D .Positive.

How to Read a Book was first published in the early months of 1940. To my surprise and, I confess, to my delight, it immediately became a best-seller. Why, then, attempt to recast and
rewrite the book for the present generation of readers The reasons for doing so lie in changes that have taken place both in our society in the last thirty years and in the subject itself. Today many
more of the young who complete high school enter and complete four years of college; a much larger proportion of the population has become literate in spite of or even because of the
popularity of radio and television.
The year after How to Read a Book was published, a parody of it appeared under the title
How to Read Two Books; while Professor Richards wrote a serious essay entitled “How to Read a Page”. I mention both of them in order to point out that the problems of reading suggested by both of these titles are fully treated in this rewriting, especially the problem of how to read a number of related books in relation to one another and read them in such a way that the complementary and conflicting things they have to say about a common subject are clearly grasped.
Of the four parts, only Part Two, demonstrating the rules of Analytical Reading, closely
parallels the content of the original, and even that has been largely recast. The introduction in Part One of the distinction of four levels of reading is the basic and controlling change in the book’s
organization and content. The exposition in Part Three of the different ways to approach different kinds of reading materials is the most extensive addition that has been made. Finally, the
discussion of Syntopical Reading in Part Four is wholly new.
In the work of updating, recasting, and rewriting this book, I have been joined by Charles Van Doren, and we acquired many of the new insights that have gone into the rewriting of this

book.

The problem with a catchy name is that sometimes it catches on too well. Take the hygiene hypothesis (卫生假说), outlined in 1989 by David Strachan of St George’s, a hospital and medical school in London. It suggests that the rise of allergenic (引起过敏症的) sensitivity observed in
rich countries over the course of the 20th century may have been caused by a corresponding
decline in childhood infections, and also by a shift from rural to urban living, so that children are no longer routinely exposed to farm animals.
Dr Strachan’s work still has much to recommend it. What the catchy label has developed is a false belief that cleanliness is not necessarily a health benefit. In reality, says Thomas Marrs, a paediatric allergist in London, hygiene is usually about bugs causing infection — and the
beneficial bugs are different from those which do that. But it is obvious why alternative
descriptions, such as “the high turnover and diversity hypothesis” or “the microbial deprivation
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
hypothesis”, have not caught on, more accurate though they may be.
To collect further data, Okabe Hisao, a professor, and his colleagues have read through the Japan Environment and Children’s Study, which tracked up to 100,000 pregnancies for the first time. They observed connections between household pet ownership before and after a child’s
birth, and any food allergies diagnosed in that child’s first three years.
Of nearly 66,000 children they chose to observe, 22% had been born into households with pets, and were exposed to microbes and other potential allergens from those animals. Children in households with dogs, the researchers found, had lower rates than average of allergies to eggs,
milk and nuts. Those cohabiting with cats seemed more tolerant of wheat and soyabeans.
However, children whose parents kept turtles appeared unaffected. And, curiously, those exposed to hamsters (仓鼠) appeared more likely than average to be allergic to nuts.
What this means is unclear. Confirming or denying this will need more study. Nevertheless, Dr Okabe’s contribution is an interesting addition to the debate about Dr Strachan’s brainchild.
12 .What can be inferred from Strachan’s hygiene hypothesis
A .Urban living benefits children a lot.
B .Exposure to animals may reduce childhood allergies.
C .Cleanliness matters a lot to keep healthy.
D .Childhood infections will increase in rich countries.
13 .What did Okabe refer to the Japan Environment and Children’s Study for
A .Its authority on allergens. B .Its focus on households.
C .Its animal models. D .Its enormous samples.
14 .Which of the following may Okabe agree with
A .Dogs and cats are the best choices as pets.
B .Children with hamsters are less probably allergic to nuts.
C .Children with cats are less allergic to wheat than average.
D .Children’s immune system is largely affected by where they live.
15 .What does the author think of Okabe’s theory
A .Imaginative. B .Outdated.
C .Favorable. D .Ridiculous.

Lee sensed that Minji had a lot of potential, but something was holding her back.
One day, Mrs Lee decided to talk to Minji after class. She asked her how she was doing and if she needed any help with math. Minji looked down and said she was fine. She said she didn’t
like math and she didn’t think she was good at it. Mrs Lee smiled and said that math was not easy, but it could be fun and useful if she gave it a chance. She offered to tutor Minji after school and
help her with her homework. Minji hesitated, but agreed to try.
The next day, Mrs Lee and Minji met in the library after school. Mrs Lee brought some
worksheets and a calculator. She explained the concepts in a simple and clear way, and gave Minji some examples and exercises to practice. She praised Minji for every correct answer and
