八、阅读理解
Jim and I were like brothers. We walked to school together, shared lunch every day, and both dreamed of winning the school’s basketball game. That’s why I felt so excited when our teacher said we’d be the main players of the team.
But everything changed a week before the game. I passed Jim’s desk after class and heard him say to our teammate, “He’s not ready for the big game. He always misses the key shots (关键投篮).” My face turned red. I didn’t let him explain—just shouted angrily, “I thought you were my friend!” and ran away. After that, we didn’t speak a word. When we passed each other in the hallway, we’d look away. I felt lonely, and even my basketball skills got worse without my best friend practicing with me.
Mom noticed my sadness. “You look like you’re carrying a heavy bag,” she said at dinner. I told her everything. “Did you ask Jim what he really meant ” she asked softly. “Misunderstandings are like knots (结)—you need to talk to open them, not pull harder.” That night, I wrote Jim a note asking to meet at our usual basketball court.
When I saw Jim, I was nervous but started first: “I’m sorry I shouted at you.” Jim was surprised. “I’m the one who’s sorry! I was talking about your old shoes—they’re too slippery (容易打滑的), so you sometimes miss shots. I wanted to buy you a new pair but didn’t know how to say it.” We both laughed. I realized how silly I was to misunderstand him.
We practiced together that afternoon, just like before. In the game, we won the second prize. But the real win was getting our friendship back. I learned that good communication isn’t just about talking—it’s about listening, too. It’s the best way to keep relationships warm and strong.

九、任务型阅读。
Wang Qian was a lovely girl, who never argued with her parents. But when she became an eighth-grader, things started to change. “We often argue, sometimes because of unimportant things,” she said.
Maybe Wang got the “eighth-grade syndrome (综合症)”. Some experts think eighth-graders usually go through a lot because of the changes in their body and mind. A survey shows that the lack (缺乏) of support from parents is also a reason. Wang’s classmate Liu Shijin is an example. “The exams in Grade 8 are difficult, but my parents still don’t support me,” she said sadly.
As eighth-graders enter the rebellious phase (进入叛逆期), they want to be free and have their own ideas. The survey shows that about 47 percent of eighth-graders try to persuade (说服) their parents when they have different ideas. Wang feels this deeply. “I think I am an adult. I can make decisions by myself,” she said. For example, she thinks there is nothing wrong with playing with boys, but her parents don’t agree with her. They often argue about this.
To deal with these problems, an expert from Nantong gives useful advice to eighth-graders. “First, calm down and pay more attention to your studies. Second, develop some interests and share them with your parents. Finally, learn about your changes and know yourself well. Then try to accept them,” she said.
1.Why do students have “eighth-grade syndrome”

I hope you’re both well. I want to talk to you about how I’ve been feeling lately.
I know you have very high standards for me, and that makes me feel upset and worried. When you compare me with Kate, I feel hurt because I try my best, too. I was afraid to talk to you in person because I thought I would cry.But I also know you love me and want me to do well. I love you both very much.
Can we have a gentle talk later, maybe over dinner I hope we can understand each other better. Love, Judy

Work in pairs. Imagine one of you is Judy and the other is her parent. Role-play a conversation after Judy's parents read the letter..
OK, Mum / Dad. I'm feeling a lot of pressure because ...
I'm sorry, Judy. I didn't realize you were so stressed. Would you like to talk about it
Useful Expressions:
For parents:
We realize now that we might have put too much pressure on you.
We want to apologize for comparing you with Kate. It wasn't fair.
Reading your letter helped us understand your feelings better.
We love you for who you are, not just for your grades.
Useful Expressions:
For Judy:
I feel pressure when you constantly compare me with others.
It makes me feel like I'm not good enough.
I worry that I'll disappoint you if I don't get top grades.
Sometimes I just need to know that you're on my side.
I felt really sad and alone when I thought you loved Kate more.
