The World’s Most Beautiful Buildings Ranked
Architecture has always been a form of art perfected by few, yet appreciated by many. Unlike playing an
instrument or writing a novel, designing and building a livable structure requires more than just imagination, but
also ingenuity and craftsmanship. We have ranked some of the most amazing buildings based on their beauty.
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Angkor Wat translates to “City of Temples” and was built as a Hindu temple in the 12th century. Its
architecture combines temple-mountain and galleried temple styles, both of which originated from the architectural
period of the Khmer Empire which ruled between the 8th and 15th centuries CE. Most structures of the period were
built similarly to this one, and all were made of stone.
Potala Palace, China
This current World Heritage Site and museum was formerly the dwelling place of the Dalai Lama before the
1950s. The palace got its name, which translates to “brilliance,” from Mount Potalaka, the mythical home of the
bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, who “represents the compassion of all Buddhas.”
Hagia Sophia, Turkey
The many phases of Hagia Sophia began when it was built in 537 AD. First it was a Greek Orthodox Christian
cathedral, then during the Ottoman Empire was converted into a mosque, and now it’s a museum. The city of its
location—formerly Lygos, Byzantium, Augusta Antonia, New Rome, Constantinople etc. currently Istanbul,
similarly went through many changes.
Westminster Abbey, United Kingdom
The former cathedral used to be called the Collegiate Church of St. Peter at Westminster until it lost cathedral
(or abbey) status in 1556. For centuries Westminster Abbey has served as a wedding and burial place for the British
monarchy (皇室).
21. What is a common feature of the buildings from the Khmer Empire period mentioned in the text
A. They were all used as tombs. B. They were all built with stone.
C. They all had different functions. D. They were all in different countries.
22. Which function is NOT mentioned concerning Hagia Sophia
A. A royal palace. B. A Christian cathedral.
C. A mosque. D. A museum.
23. What can we learn from the text about these buildings
A. They are all still used for religious activities today.
B. They are all the tallest buildings in their countries.
C. They were all built in the same century.
D. They have all experienced changes in function.

Canadian musicians Jenn Beaupre—better known as Rozette and JKAI never anticipated that their “reaction”
videos, a project they initiated nearly three years ago, would achieve widespread popularity in China.
Rozette, a singer-songwriter and vocal coach, responds to live performances by Chinese singers on popular
music shows. Her honest reactions, fresh viewpoints, and sharp yet professional and humorous comments have
drawn millions of followers in China.
Born in Alberta, Canada, Rozette made her debut (首次亮相) as a singer about 20 years ago. With a diverse
musical style mixing elements of pop, soul and jazz, she earned praise for her powerful vocals, impressive stage
performances and accomplished singing. JKAI, who plans the videos, has also been active in the music industry for
about two decades, writing hundreds of songs licensed to record labels, games, films and TV commercials across
Asia.
Humbly describing themselves as “small players”, the two told China Daily they started posting videos simply
for fun and as an experiment. JKAI, who has Chinese ancestry, was curious about how his best friend Rozette, who
knew little about China, would respond to the nation’s music that he loves.
They do little preparation or research about the song or singer to be reviewed, ensuring Rozette’s reactions are
natural, honest and spontaneous. With her expertise in vocal skills, she shares her immediate feelings about the
singer’s performance, the song’s production values and even the singer’s personality.
Such honesty is valued by an audience seeking a refreshing view of China. “I was so distant from all of this
music and culture that made it easier to speak my mind. This project gave me a fulfilling opportunity to use my
skills without other’s influence.” says Rozette.
Since initiating, they have filmed around 800 videos. On Bilibili alone, their videos have accumulated over
630 million views and attracted nearly 2.4 million followers. In 2024, they were listed among Bilibili’s top 100
creators and presented with the Overseas Content Creator of the Year award in 2025.
24. What is Rozette’s professional background according to the text
A. A video planner and producer. B. A music producer and vocal coach.
C. A record label manager and composer. D. A music critic and television host.
25. What can we know about JKAI
A. He has a personal connection to Chinese culture.
B He is less experienced in the music industry than Rozette.
C. He prefers not to appear in front of the camera.
D. He was initially doubtful about the project’s success.
26. Why are Rozette’s reactions considered natural and honest
A. She carefully studies each song beforehand.
B. She is already familiar with most Chinese singers.
C. She makes little preparation before filming.
D. She follows a strict script written by JKAI.
27. What is the main idea of the text
A. Chinese music shows are gaining international fame.
B. Cross-cultural music collaboration is a rising global trend.
C. Bilibili rewards overseas content Canadian creators with annual awards in 2025.
D. Two Canadian musicians became popular in China through honest reaction videos.

Where the Deer and the Antelope Play is a slim yet richly layered novel by Rick Donahoe. The story follows
Stewart Waldon, a man who, after a life-changing medical diagnosis, heads to the Pacific Northwest with a single
goal: to end his life on his own terms. He spends days camping roughly, living off the land and reflecting on his
existence. But an unexpected disturbance thwarts his plan. Ready to give life another chance, Stewart finds work at
a nearby ranch—a decision that ultimately transforms his life.
There, he becomes engaged in ranch work and falls for Annie, the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Yet
his newfound happiness is soon threatened by rising tensions over the fate of old-growth forests. Ned, the elderly
ranch owner, holds deep respect for the land and believes in responsible management. His son Butch, however,
sees only the money that logging and land access would bring. Viewing Stewart as yet another obstacle, Butch
becomes very unfriendly toward him, especially as Stewart draws closer to Annie. As conflicts intertwine (交织)
across generations, ideologies, and romance, the story steadily advances toward a violent outbreak.
Donahoe’s cast of characters is generously drawn, working through familiar struggles layered within this
compact narrative. The writing is lyrical (抒情的), with comfortably paced prose (散文) that beautifully captures
the natural landscape of the Pacific Northwest. The book touches on hot-button issues such as logging and
ecological conservation, but Donahoe’s focus remains firmly on good storytelling. His background in resource
conservation and his lived experience in a mill-town community lend the story a powerful sense of reality. He
clearly cares about every word and the distinct shade of meaning it carries.
For readers who favour good writing as much as a good story, Where the Deer and the Antelope Play is an
easy, satisfying choice. It gives off a timeless atmosphere that will deeply resonate (共鸣).
28. Which word is the closest meaning to the word “thwarts” in Paragraph 1
A. assists B. delays C. prevents D. complicates
29. What is the main source of conflict between Ned and Butch
A. Their disagreement over the value of old-growth forests.
B. Their different views on how to treat Stewart.
C. Their competition for Annie’s attention.
D. Their contrasting attitudes toward ranch work.
30. What mainly contributes to the reality of Donahoe’s novel
A. His lyrical prose and comfortably paced storytelling.
B. His focus on hot-button issues like logging.
C. His personal experience in a mill-town community.
D. His generously drawn cast of characters.
31. What is the best title for the passage
A. Man vs. Nature: A Story of Survival
B. Finding Purpose in the Pacific Northwest
C. Stewart and Butch: A Contest for Love and Land
D. Donahoe’s Novel: Lyrical Prose, Timeless Appeal

Around Christmas, 50-year-old New Yorker Holly Jespersen felt unwell but hesitated to see a doctor. She
turned to ChatGPT, which advised her against visiting. Days later, with a high fever and headaches, again using the
chatbot to decide when, she finally went to urgent care and was diagnosed with influenza A.
Holly is far from alone. According to OpenAI, over 40 million daily health-related enquiry, with 230 million
weekly. In January, it announced ChatGPT Health, allowing users to upload medical records for customized (定制
的) support. The company stresses it is meant to “support, not replace” medical care, not for diagnosis or treatment,
but to help with everyday questions and pattern recognition.
Yet concerns arise. Family physician Dr. Alexa Mieses Malchuk warns that ChatGPT, like WebMD,
prioritizes being helpful over accurate. A 2023 study found ChatGPT’s cancer treatment plans contained many
errors, some hard even for experts to detect. However, newer research on colon cancer showed its answers on
symptoms and prevention were highly accurate, suggesting LLMs (大型语言模型) may assist patient education
but not clinical decisions.
Beyond accuracy, psychologists highlight anxiety risks. A 2013 study confirmed that online symptom
searches can intensify health anxiety, especially for those intolerant of uncertainty. Clinical psychologist Elizabeth
Sadock notes that ChatGPT, always available and affirming, fuels reassurance-seeking (寻 求 慰 藉 ) behavior,
trapping users in a cycle of anxiety. For some patients, limiting ChatGPT use may now be part of treatment.
Privacy is another puzzle. Biomedical informatics professor Bradley Malin acknowledges OpenAI’s security
efforts, but stresses ChatGPT Health falls outside HIPAA regulation. Patients may unknowingly lose legal
protections when their data flows from secured medical records to an unregulated third party.
Yet some see value. Dermatologist Kumar views ChatGPT Health as educational, clarifying terms like
sunscreen types, not diagnostic. He distinguishes it from WebMD’s curated, reviewed content, while ChatGPT’s AI
may mislead.
Thus, ChatGPT Health enters America’s broken system as a double-edged sword: a round-the-clock assistant
that may empower (赋权) patients, yet risks misinforming, over-reassuring, and exposing them to unregulated data
practices.
32. Why does OpenAI launch ChatGPT Health
A. To replace medical care totally. B. To provide consultation timely.
C. To treat the patients early. D. To diagnose diseases quickly.
33. What can we learn from paragraphs 3-5
A. ChatGPT may lead to more risks than benefits.
B. ChatGPT is always available, helpful and accurate.
C. Psychologists advise people not to use ChatGPT.
D. People will have no privacy when using ChatGPT.
34. How does Kumar find ChatGPT
A. It teaches patients some medical terms.
B. It can be used as an assistant to patients.
C. It can help more patients cure diseases.
D. It has more advantages than disadvantages.
35. What is the author’s attitude toward ChatGPT Health
A. Enthusiastic and supportive. B. Cautious and optimistic.
C. Disapproving and negative. D. Critical and loyal.

How Not to Fall into Despair
Finding meaning and keeping hope through pain and loss is a vital skill. In 1949, the Holocaust survivor,
psychiatrist and psychologist Viktor Frankl coined the term “tragic optimism” to describe this puzzle.
36 The first is pain—we have physical bodies. The second is guilt—we make choices and feel
responsible for outcomes. The third is loss—nothing we love lasts forever. Tragic optimism means accepting that
life will be hard, yet choosing to move forward positively. It understands we cannot force constant happiness.
37 We can feel joy and sorrow, hope and fear—sometimes all in one day.
Hard times often push people to extremes: False positivity or deep despair. 38 Between them lies a
better way: wise hope and action. This means seeing reality clearly, then focusing our energy on what we can
change.
Believing we have control builds hope; hope reminds us we have control. 39 We need this balance
now more than ever. Frankl believed our deepest pains can become sources of meaning. Suffering can lead to
growth; guilt can motivate change. Those who find meaning in hardship survive not just in body, but in spirit.
40 It is what makes suffering bearable.
A. It allows us to feel all emotions.
B. Both stop us from taking useful action.
C. It falsely requires only positive thinking.
D. Extreme emotions are not necessarily bad.
E. Meaning is more than just surviving difficulty
F. This mindset is key to personal and community strength.
G. Tragic optimism is based on three common human struggles.

The last lesson of the day was PE class. Alice was skipping rope on the playground, surrounded by several
classmates watching her. It was her best sport. The rope spun (旋转) quickly as she jumped. When time was up, the
counter showed 201 skips. Smiling, Alice flashed a victory sign to the crowd. Just then, the school bell rang—class
was over. Alice packed up her skipping rope. It was time to give her answer to Ms. Harriet.
That morning, Ms. Harriet had asked her if she would be willing to take charge of the class bulletin board (板
报) for the upcoming competition. The student who usually handled it, Lily, was sick, and someone needed to step
in. Alice was shocked that Ms. Harriet had chosen her. She responded nervously, insisting that her handwriting was
terrible. But Ms. Harriet reassured her, saying she believed in her ability and encouraged her to think it over and let
her know her decision after school.
Now, walking toward the teachers’ office, Alice felt nervous. The thought of her messy handwriting being put
up on the wall for everyone to see made her stomach turn. She had already made up her mind to say no. With that
decision in mind, she quickened her pace and ran across the sports ground.
Alice was about to pass the sandpit (沙坑 ) when someone nearby caught her attention. It was Tom from a
different class. In her mind, Tom had never been good at long jump, but he was practicing it. Curious, she went
over to ask what he was doing. Tom explained that no one else had signed up for the long jump event, and without
a participant, their class wouldn’t get any points in the school sports meeting. So when the headteacher asked if
anyone would give it a try, he volunteered. Alice reminded him that he wasn’t good at it, but Tom simply said that
he knew that and that it wasn’t about being the best, but about trying and doing his part for the class. Then he went
back to practicing. What a similar issue they both faced! “If Tom could face his weakness, why couldn’t I ” Alice
said to herself.

(1)续写词数应为 150 左右;
