Detailed-reading
Make a summary.
The four-day journey offered them an opportunity to explore, to engage, to reach.
Deep thinking
Version A: They decided to fly to Vancouver and then take the train across Canada.
Version B: Rather than travel by commercial airline all the way, they decided to fly to Vancouver and then take the train.
Version A: They saw a very open country and were amazed.
Version B: At school, they had learnt that Canada’s population is small. However, they did not anticipate seeing such an open country, and were truly amazed.
Which version better explains WHY they took the train
Which version better explains WHERE the “amazement” came from
It shows a contrast; It explains they had an option (airline) but chose another; It makes their choice deliberate and meaningful.
It highlights the gap between knowledge and experience. The “amazement” isn’t just about the view.
Use discourse markers to show relationships
Discourse markers are more commonly known as “linking words”. They are used to show relationships between ideas. Such as
①to add something (e.g. also, besides, additionally)
②to show contrast (e.g. however, on the other hand)
③to explain a reason (e.g. because, since)
④to show a result (e.g. therefore, as a result)
Without discourse markers, the connections between sentences and paragraphs in a text would be less obvious.
