Earthquakes: What We Need to Know
Hi everyone! Let`s start with a sad fact: On May 12, 2008, a 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit Wenchuan, China. It killed over 80,000 people and destroyed thousands of homes. Today, we`ll talk about what causes earthquakes, how to prepare for them, and how to stay safe when they happen.
First, let`s understand earthquakes. They are caused by tectonic plate movement—the big ‘plates’ under the Earth`s surface bump or slide past each other.
Can we prevent earthquakes No, but we can reduce damage—for example, building earthquake-proof houses (like using strong steel instead of weak bricks).

How to Stay Safe During an Earthquake
When an earthquake hits:
If you`re inside: Drop, Cover, and Hold On (hide under a desk, stay away from windows);
If you`re outside: Run to an open area (away from buildings or power lines).
After the earthquake, survivors need medical help, food/water, and temporary shelters.
