To most people, the “Mind the gap” announcement is just the daily chatter on the London Underground. But for McCollum, the three words bring back the voice of someone she loved and lost: her husband, Oswald Laurence. Laurence passed away in 2007, and McCollum would often travel to Embankment tube station just to hear his voice. Eighteen years later, she continues the journey.
In the 1960s, Laurence was selected by the London Underground to record the “Mind the gap” announcement, heard by millions of commuters for decades. Over time, most stations adopted a new voice, but Embankment retained the original — it was McCollum’s special spot to remember her husband. Yet in November 2012, Laurence’s voice was unexpectedly replaced during system upgrades.
“I used to wait for the next train to hear his voice,” McCollum recalled. “Suddenly one day it wasn’t his voice. I said to my friend, ‘What happened to Oswald’s voice ’ The tape had broken ” She added, “I felt slightly panicky and a bit anxious.” McCollum spoke to the guard on the platform, who confirmed they had a new PA system and voice. Shocked and tearful, McCollum contacted Transport for London and asked if it could restore the original announcement.
Moved by her story, the staff at Transport for London promised to try and help. They made good on their promise. Just two weeks later, the staff had created a CD of the original recording and restored Laurence’s voice to the announcement. “I love the fact that he’s back there and I can listen to him,” said McCollum. “It does bring him very close to me.” She added, “I would have been heartsick if they had not managed to bring him back.”
Laurence’s legacy and love live on. Passengers on the northbound Northern Line at Embankment station can still hear his iconic voice telling them to “Mind the gap.” And the station remains a comforting place for McCollum, who continues to visit whenever she wants to feel close to her late husband.
4. Why did Margaret McCollum often go to Embankment tube station
A. To take the Northern Line train. B. To listen to her late husband’s voice.
C. To meet her friend who worked there. D. To report a problem with the PA system.
5. What can we infer about the staff at Transport for London
A. They always keep old recordings. B. They responded warmly to the story.
C. They often change station announcements. D. They knew McCollum’s husband personally.
6. Where could passengers still hear Laurence’s original voice after 2012
A. Nowhere: the voice was permanently deleted.
B. At all stations that had kept the old PA system.
C. On every line of the London Underground tube station.
D. On the northbound Northern Line at Embankment station.
7. The best title for this passage could be ________.
A. A Famous Voice B. A System Upgrade
C. Love, Lost and Found D. London’s Tube History

What’s best: a new phone or a day out with friends Is it better to spend money to buy things or to do things A UK study found six in ten consumers would rather spend their money on experiences than material possessions (物品). Those aged 18-34 reported spending the highest amount on entertainment activities.
Possessions can last for many years, while experiences are temporary. This, however, might be the wrong way to look at things. Psychology professor Thomas Gilovich discovered the happiness that objects provide can fade quickly. We adapt to having new possessions, so that rather than being something we are excited by, they just become our new normal.
A holiday or a day out may have a short duration, but the happiness it provides can last much longer. Waiting for our latest purchases to be delivered is frustrating, but waiting for an exciting event gives us a feeling of anticipation. Experiences are often shared, so we gain pleasure from social connection and time spent with other people.
Memories of our experiences become part of our identity. As Gilovich points out, we are the sum of our experiences. Indeed, the very fact that experiences last for a limited time can give them value. Physical goods deteriorate over time, while our memories of an experience can give us pleasure year after year.
Of course, it’s not always that simple. Other studies have suggested that happiness gained from experiences might depend on your personality type, and how many possessions you already have. People with more quiet personality types may get less benefit from social occasions and those with few possessions may get greater benefit from objects.
However, for many of us, it could be that when choosing how to spend our spare income, we’ll get far more benefit by spending on something to do, rather than something to have.
8. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph
A. To introduce the topic. B. To give an example.
C. To provide a definition. D. To present an argument.
9. Why does the happiness from objects fade quickly according to Thomas Gilovich
A. Objects are not as meaningful as experiences in people’s life.
B. People get used to new possessions and they become ordinary.
C. People often compare their possessions with those of other people.
D. Objects start to lose their value the moment they are bought by people.
10. What does the underlined word “deteriorate” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Get worse. B. Stay the same. C. Prove practical. D. Become better.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards spending money on experiences
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Negative.
D
Fields Medal winner Akshay Venkatesh was once asked: “In a world where AI can answer everything for you, is mathematics still worth studying ” He presented AI as a chance to address a fundamental gap that has grown between how mathematics is practiced and what we truly value-understanding.
Mathematics is often called a “universal language”. Yet, as the field has expanded far beyond the basic numbers and shapes learned during the pre-college years, there is no single chart can be used to explore the vastness. Mathematics has become increasingly divided. It is now organized into 63 major categories and 529 subfields, each with its own language that takes years to learn.
In a mathematical research paper, authors use the word “we”, which refers to both the writers and the readers. Because to really understand a mathematical argument, readers must recreate it for themselves in their own heads. In other words, mathematical communication goes at the pace of mathematical understanding.
Mathematician William Thurston wrote, “We should focus much more energy on understanding and explaining the basic ideas of mathematics, rather than only on the latest results.” He suggests developing “mathematical language that is effective for conveying ideas to people who don’t already know them” and providing more opportunities for communication training and practice.
In a world where AI is getting smarter and smarter, Venkatesh asked, “Why do we still need to prove things ” Thurston put it simply: people will always want to understand why something is true, not just a machine’s confirmation. What truly matters is how mathematical ideas enrich and change the way humans see and relate to the world. Even if an AI can tell people what is true, there will always be more to understand about why.
12. Why does the author mention the numbers “63” and “529” in the passage
A. To prove that mathematics is a universal language.
B. To compare the development of AI and mathematics.
C. To show the great expansion and division of mathematics.
D. To emphasize the goal of mastering the specialized languages.
13. What does the use of “we” in papers indicate according to the text
A. The joint efforts of mathematicians and readers.
B. The author’s attempt to stimulate readers’ curiosity.
C. A common way to write mathematical research papers.
D. The need for readers’ mental involvement to understand.
14. According to the passage, how does AI change the role of mathematicians
A. It makes them focus more on checking the results.
B. It requires them to learn advanced computer skills.
C. It turns their focus to explaining why things are true.
D. It causes less communication between them and the public.
15. Where is the passage most likely taken from
A. A science fiction. B. A science magazine. C. A textbook. D. An encyclopedia.

I have been teaching the identical course to undergraduate and graduate students from various majors, like finance and medicine for 15 years. Although my lecture materials and teaching methods have stayed unchanged, student evaluations last year hit a record high. ____16____ What, then, led to this remarkable improvement
The key change was the introduction of a strict policy on electronic devices. Laptops and smartphones were banned for note-taking, with just one exception: devices were allowed only if students were writing with a digital pen. ____17____ They claimed devices were essential for notes or reference, arguing that digital tools were indispensable for study efficiency. However, after a short period of adaptation, almost all students noticed their ability to concentrate had improved positively.
To explain why this policy worked, I shared relevant research with the students. One study showed that students who took notes by hand remembered about 35% more content than those who typed on portable computers. ____18____ The mental effort required for handwriting helps students gain a deeper understanding of the material. In addition, another study with 480 participants found that students who placed their phones on their desks scored 18% lower on focus-related tasks than those who put their phones away. ____19____
More evidence demonstrates that cell phones, even in a powered-off state, reduce individuals’ mental capacity and weaken the quality of face-to-face conversations. ____20____ I hold the view that universities should take the same measures to boost students’ academic performance, since this simple but powerful approach creates a more attentive and interactive learning environment for everyone.
A. This data shows focus needs a boost
B. They feared losing notes or urgent calls.
C. Most middle and high schools have become phone-free.
D. Constructive remarks on focus and course quality poured in
E. Writing by hand requires active thinking; typing is often mindless.
F. This proves that phone nearby has an effect on students’ performance
G. Predictably, students immediately doubted and opposed this decision at first.

My walk home through our town park used to be the best part of my day. My favorite thing in the park was the mural (壁画) — a huge, colorful picture painted on the wall. It showed children playing under a bright sun, and it felt like the heart of our community. But that heart was fading. The colors were washed out, and ugly marks were everywhere, ruining the beautiful picture. I felt like a happy memory of my town was being destroyed.
One day at school, my history teacher asked the class to look at old news about our town. I found a very old article on the computer. It was about the day the mural was finished. The article said the town would always take care of the mural. It even promised to provide funds to keep it beautiful. I was surprised. Nobody was taking care of it now. The promise was broken.
When I saw a large new black mark right in the middle of the mural, I felt angry and decided to do something. I remembered my civics teacher taught me, “To make a change, you need good proof.” He often said young people should take responsibility for the community instead of waiting for adults to fix problems. I had an idea. I would find proof that people still love the mural and let Mr. Davis, the park manager, know we should save it.
I used my phone to take many clear photos of the damaged mural. I saved the old article. Then, I wrote a few simple questions on a piece of paper including “Do you want the mural to be cleaned ” After school, I went to the park and asked people these questions. Almost everyone I asked said they loved the mural and wanted it to be saved. Many people told me their own stories about the picture.
I put everything together: the photos, the old article, and a survey of what people said. With the proof that the mural was important to the town, I stood outside Mr. Davis’s office. Would he listen to a young student

A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Negative.

【答案】
Dear Editor,
I am writing to share my suggestions on how to enrich our school’s labor education programs. Such programs are vital for developing our practical skills and sense of social responsibility.
First, we can set up a school garden. Second, a class “Labor Duty Week” can be launched. With clear work division, we will take turns to clean classrooms, water plants and sort rubbish, which fosters our responsibility and teamwork spirit. Besides, holding labor skill contests, like cooking or handcrafting, will make labor more interesting and encourage us to show our talents.
I hope our school will consider these suggestions so that labor education can become more engaging and meaningful for every student.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Taking a deep breath, I knocked firmly on the door. Mr. Davis welcomed me in with a smile, and I nervously handed him my collection of proof. I explained how the mural had faded, showed him the photos of the ugly marks, and read the old article about the town’s promise. When I shared the survey results — how almost everyone wanted to save it — his eyes lit up. “You’ve done amazing work,” he said happily, patting my shoulder. “This mural is part of our town’s history, and you’ve reminded us to keep our promise.” He told me he’d apply for the funds right away to restore it.
Two weeks later, I stood in front of the restored mural. The colors were bright again — vibrant blues, warm yellows, and vivid greens that made the children in the picture look alive. The ugly marks were gone, and the mural shone like it did in the old article. Many townspeople gathered around, taking photos and sharing stories. Mr. Davis walked over and handed me a small brush. “Want to add the final touch ” he asked. As I painted a tiny sunbeam, I felt proud. I’d learned that young people could make a difference — all it took was courage, proof, and love for the community.
