My name is Emma, and drawing is my favourite hobby. I started drawing when I was 8 years old. At first, I drew simple things like cats and flowers. Now, I draw more detailed pictures, such as my family’s garden.
Drawing makes me happy. When I feel sad or stressed, I take out my pencil and paper. After drawing for 15 minutes, I always feel better. It also helps me see the world differently. I notice small beautiful things, like a butterfly on a leaf, that I didn’t see before.
Last month, I joined the school drawing club. I made new friends there who love art too. We share our drawings and give each other ideas. My art teacher says drawing teaches me patience—good pictures take time to finish. I think my hobby is not just fun, but also helps me grow.

All About Sneezing
You might not think sneezing is a way to protect yourself, but it is! Sneezing helps your body get rid of germs, dust, and smoke—things that might harm you. It’s the body’s natural way to stay healthy.
People can’t control sneezes easily. If something tickles the inside of your nose, your brain sends a message to your body to get it out. When you sneeze, many things happen fast: your eyes shut, your tongue presses against the top of your mouth, and your chest muscles get tight. Then a blast of air comes out of your lungs and nose, carrying germs and dust with it.
Some unusual things can make people sneeze. For example, some people sneeze when they look at bright lights. If you have an allergy, certain plants or animals might make you sneeze too. But sneezing can spread diseases. Germs from a sneeze can travel up to 8 metres at 160 kilometres per hour! So remember to cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze, and wash your hands afterward.

When I was in Grade 7, I was very shy and afraid to speak in class. I always sat at the back of the classroom and never raised my hand to answer questions. One day, our English teacher, Ms. Li, asked me to read a passage in front of the class. My face turned red and my voice was so quiet that almost no one could hear me. After that, I felt even more scared to speak in public.
But Ms. Li didn’t give up on me. She often talked to me after class and encouraged me to practice speaking more. She told me that everyone makes mistakes and it’s okay to be nervous. She also asked me to join the English speech club. At first, I was worried that I would do badly, but with Ms. Li’s help, I started to feel more confident.
After a few months, I took part in the school English speech competition. I practiced every day and Ms. Li helped me improve my speech. Finally, I won the third prize. That day, I felt so proud of myself. Now, I’m not shy anymore. I love speaking in public and I even want to be a speaker in the future.

I’ve been thinking about how helpless and upset I felt just a few months ago, sitting at this same desk. I was having trouble not just with math, but also feeling alone. I remember that time so clearly: I kept comparing myself to others, which added so much pressure. I felt nervous about every exam and let down by every grade.
But today I see something important. I am not helpless. That afternoon, when I found the courage to talk to my teacher Ms. Li really changed things. She was so helpful. She told me to manage my time better and not stay up too late. I still remember her words: “You need to deal with stress in a healthy way, like taking a deep breath or going for a jog.”
I also followed her advice on making friends. I began talking to my classmates more openly, and I even lent a good book to a friend. Slowly, I wasn’t left out anymore! When my classmates gathered to chat or work on group tasks, they started inviting (邀请) me to join them.
Joining the basketball team was challenging at first, but I learned that it’s okay to make mistakes—that’s how we learn. Little by little, I grew more confident and hopeful.
Looking back now, I don’t regret those difficult days. They taught me how to balance school and life. I’m thankful for this period of time, and I believe I can shine in my own way.
I’m closing today with this thought: I’m doing better than I thought.

① There may be no place more dangerous than Death Valley (死亡谷). Death Valley is the hottest and the driest place in North America.
②Death Valley isn’t an easy place to live in. It gets less than two feet of rain a year and it’s hot, too. In July, temperature often gets over 46℃. Even a lake there has turned into salt crystals (晶体). But it is cold at night. When it gets cold enough, the water on the ground will turn into thin ice. Then the strong wind—like a large hand—can move the rocks along the icy ground. That is why the rocks can “walk” on their own in Death Valley.
③The weather condition in Death Valley is terrible, but there is still full of lives. Nothing can stop plants and animals from making it their home. People have found more than 1,000 kinds of plants there. It also has 51 kinds of mammals (哺乳动物), 6 kinds of fish, and more than 300 kinds of birds. The animals aren’t all small, either.
④Finding water is the biggest challenge for anything that lives here. To survive, some plants’ roots (根部) can go fifty feet under the ground to find water. Kangaroo rats (更格卢鼠) get the water they need from flowers.
⑤Death Valley really makes a lot of surprise!

1.What is the main purpose of sneezing
A.To cool down the body. B.To get rid of harmful things.
C.To relieve tiredness. D.To show illness.
2.What happens when people sneeze

C.Their chest muscles get tight. D.Their hands shake.

From childhood, Li went to the mountains with his father to pick herbs, gaining wide knowledge about animals, plants and medicine. Although Li’s father hoped his son could get a government (政府) job, Li failed the exam three times. He then turned his attention to medicine.
At the age of 33, Li became famous for curing Prince Zhu Houkun’s son. A few years later, he was invited to work at the Imperial Medical Institute (太医院) in Beijing. During that time, he read many ancient medical texts, and noticed a mess in the naming and categorization (分类) of herbs. To deal with it, he decided to leave his job and focus on writing a book about herbs.
After that, Li travelled to many places and got much first-hand experience. He also read hundreds of medical books and collected different kinds of herbs. Li Shizhen was famous for his book Compendium of Materia Medica (《本草纲目》) . He spent 27 years writing the book. Unluckily, Li Shizhen died before the book officially came out. It is such a successful book. Now it is still one of the most important medical books in China.

A Bike with Square Wheels Sergii Gordieiev, an engineer, has put his skills to the test by creating a bicycle with square wheels. The bike works like a tank but is powered by its pedals. Rather than going round, the square wheels stay still. But the tyres around them slide along the ground like the caterpillar moves on a tank. This might make the bike slow to ride. Sergii also has a popular YouTube channel where he posts his other inventions. “Prison” Break A team of scientists has created a tiny robot that can melt itself down and then rebuild itself back into its former shape, allowing it to do jobs in small spaces or even escape from prison. While such a robot sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, the team actually found their inspiration in the sea cucumber. They recently tested out the robot’s special abilities and published the results in Matter. ____________ Researchers from Tongji University in Shanghai have developed a new kind of drone (无人机) named TJ-Flying Fish. The drone weighs 1.63kg with a wheelbase (轴距) of 380mm. It can fly in the air for 6 minutes or swim underwater for 40 minutes with a maximum dive depth of 3 meters.

The Yangtze River is the longest river in China and the third longest river in the world. 1 It is about 6,300 kilometres long. It starts from the Tanggula Mountains and runs through some provinces. 2
During the long history of ancient China, this river helped feed millions of people and develop ancient cultures. Many important cities such as Shanghai and Nanjing are sitting along the river.

A program was set up in 1989 to protect the water and land around the river. It was successful because it helped improve the environment. 2 It helps protect white-flag dolphins, one of the rarest animals in the world. The number of white-flag dolphins in China dropped because of the pollution in the Yangtze River.
