After retiring from professional soccer in 2013, Amir Lowery returned home and began
coaching at a youth club. He knew that the city's immigrant (移民) communities included many
soccer enthusiasts, but girls and boys from such communities were nowhere to be seen on the costly
club circuit. Two years later,Lowery co- founded the Open Goal Project to help talented young
players who could not afford club fees. The program supports about 500 children who play on eight
free club teams, in a mini- league, and at summer camps. Beyond soccer skills, participants learn
nutrition, financial knowledge, and receive academic and college guidance.
Joining his first soccer program at age 4, Lowery played for youth clubs and his parents
sacrificed time, money and energy to transport him to games and tournaments. He had a social
network of people who backed his passion and really wanted to see him succeed. That foundation
helped him earn a full scholarship to Wake Forest University, where he captained the men's team
before joining Major LeagueSoccer.
The Open Goal Project operates on an annual budget of roughly $700,000. Local officials- say
the families it serves would otherwise have no access to high- level soccer. Lowery also hopes the
program will broaden the soccer talent pool, and argues that rising costs- often near $1,000 a year per
child preclude many skilled players. Removing financial barriers, he believes, would reveal much
untapped talent.
On a sunny afternoon, Lowery leads a practice on a field, where dozens of kids train and parents
sit in chairs, watching proudly. Loach Preeons Ogu, once an early Open Goal Project participant,
understands how priceless such sense of belonging is. Feeling out of place in a wealthy suburban
club shaped her belief in the Open Goal Project's mission. As practice ends and the children walk off
the field, it's clear they leave with more than ball skills.
24. Why was the Open Goal Project established
A. To lower fees of the soccer club. B. To inspire talented soccer players globally.
C. To equip children with multi-skills. D. To fire soccer dreams of gifted poor kids.
25. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The influence of sports. B. Lowery's achievements.
C. The value of assistance. D. Lowery's love for soccer.
26. What does the underlined word“ preclude” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Transform. B. Prevent. C. Rejuvenate. D. Disappoint.
27. Which aspect of the project matters most to Precious Ogu
A. It forms closer family bonds. B. It thinks highly of welfare services.
C. It opens the path to the future. D. It creates a harmonious atmosphere.

Deep in a protected nature reserve in Northern Guatemala's Sierra del Lacandón National Park,
shade from the trees and a light wind from the Usumacinta River offer people relief from the heat.
Here in theMaya Biosphere Reserve, there are not only thousands of species, including the Ramón
and Copal trees providing shade, but also Romario Ramírez, one of the many humans who live in the
park. Ramírez is a tour guide; he knows this forest and its creatures like the back of his hand.
But guiding tourists through the park is just part of his work. Nearly 20 thousand people live
within this park, almost all of whom play a role in caring for the forest.
Forest fires are the largest threat to the reserve. Set mostly by outsiders, the fires are usually
intended to clear the forest to expand cattle and soy farms. While the fires are started by humans,
their intensity and ability to spread are made worse by climate change. In response, everyone in this
community is trained to use a number of tools to discourage the fires, including cameras and other
similar equipment, which are also used to monitor biodiversity. According to a report, collectively they have reduced 369,000 tons ofCO emissions and protected 870 species of wildlife between 2012 and 2014.
To keep visitors engaged, guides lead hikes within the jungle and excursions (远足) to ancient
sites.Sustainable tourist programs, or ecotourism, have become increasingly popular as a way to help
the remote community become self- sufficient. In this model, every visit from a traveler directly
translates into greater capacity to preserve the forest.
The local tourism commission in this small Northern Guatemalan community hopes to guard the
area by inviling tourists to think about the reserve as more than a site to visit and to see how they live
and develop as a community.
28. What phenomenon is described in paragraph 1
A. Man and nature coexist closely. B. Biodiversity is vital to the forest.
C. The locals rely on nature to live. D. The reserve is popular with tourists.
29. Why does the author cite a report in paragraph 3
A. To show risks of widespread forest fires. B. To prove effectiveness of fire prevention-
C. To praise the use of devices to tackle fires. D. To reveal the reason for discouraging fires.
30. What can tourists' engagement with the site bring
A. More potential for ecotourism. B. More insight into ancient life.
C. More collaboration on the economy. D. More support for local protection.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Guided Tours, Guarded Forest B. Fire Threats, Local Responses
C. Local Guides, Global Visitors D. Ancient Forest, Modern Guardian s

A new study from the University of Sheffield is investigating how social robots can help to
reduce anxiety and worry in children during their stay in hospital.
Researchers will explore the types of interactions between social robots—— which interact
with humans through speech and movements—— and patients aged five to twelve at Sheffield
Children's Hospital. Led byBrenda Littler, the Sheffield team will assess the reaction and emotional
impact of meeting the robots which are thought to help reduce negative feelings in children who
often feel nervous about going into hospital.
Ten- year- old Brandon goes to Sheffield Children's Hospital every two weeks for treatment for eczema(湿疹) which he has suffered from since the age of two. Brandon's appointments with his
doctor can last four hours, but meeting the robots has helped to make them a lot more interesting. He
met Pepper, a tall humanoid robot, and MiRo, an animal- like robot. Pepper can be programmed to
move, talk, and even dance, while MiRo can make animal- like sounds and has sensory and motor
abilities.
“Sheffield Children's Hospital is committed to advancing the care of the children and young
people we look after,” said Paul Dimitri, Professor of Child Health and Consultant in Paediatric Endocrinology atSheffield Children's Hospital, who is supervising (监督) the project.“Brenda's work
is helping us to understand how our patients react and respond to different types of social robots, and
how we best use them in children's healthcare, all of which are new to us. Using such new insights,
Sheffield Children's Hospital can develop a diverse range of novel technologies to support the
development of world- leading technologies for children's healthcare.”
The robots have visited four areas of Sheffield Children's Hospital. Despite the promising signs,
this study points to the need for more research and development. Large- scale tests that compare
social robots in different hospital settings and long- term studies with child patients are needed to
gain deeper insights and make using social robots in child care more practical.
32. What is the Sheffield team's primary concern
A. Robots' role in speeding recovery. B. Child patients' emotional well- being.
C. Social robots' wide use in healthcare. D. Kids' awareness of social interaction.
33. How do social robots help patients like Brandon
A. By reducing their fear of doctors. B. By shortening the time in hospital.
C. By making their hospital visits fun. D. By providing entertaining treatment.
34. What does Professor Paul Dimitri say about the research
A. It is patient- inspiring. B. It pioneers social robots.
C. It is ground- breaking. D. It stresses diversified care.
35. What does the author imply about the robots in the last paragraph
A. Their hospital value needs further proof. B. Their use in child healthcare lacks practice.
C. Their influences may vary with the setting. D. Their long- term benefits might go
unnoticed.

Practical Rules of Gardening
You may find nothing is worse than a garden that won't grow. You're not alone—— many
gardeners face the same struggle. 36 Either way, these problems can make a
garden truly annoying. Check out these tips if you' re sick of a problematic garden and want to see
your efforts pay off.
You should make a maintenance schedule. Plants appreciate loving care and will reward you for
your providing it. On the contrary, ignoring garden maintenance can do lasting damage to them. You
should first familiarize yourself with the needs of your plants. 37
You must visit your garden frequently. If you ask experienced gardeners for advice, they will
often say,“38 ” It means that the gardeners who spend a lot of time in their gardens
notice problems while they are still small and manageable. Regular monitoring is an effective way to
detect destructive insects and diseases before they get out of control, and what could be nicer than a
daily walk through your own little wonderland
39 Most garden plants prefer a constant amount of soil moisture (水分). To
make the job easy, set up a simple irrigation system and put it on a timer. The watering will take care
of itself, and your plants won't have to survive on the changeability of the weather.
It's best to group plants with similar maintenance needs. People tend to be with others like themselves,as we all know. 40 Plants that need good drainage (排水) should be
planted together. They should not be mixed in with plants that need very wet soil. Keep this in mind:
Group them by their growth and care needs.
A. And it's true for plants, too.
B. Keeping the water flowing is crucial.
C. It might be poor soil, or disturbing insects.
D. Plants need healthy soil and natural watering.
E. But you can turn things around with right actions.
F. The best thing for a garden is the shadow of the gardener.

Oliver was a small and introvert (内向的) boy who kept to himself. He was quiet and preferred
indoor activities. Sitting in the corner of the class, he was very much a loner.
At the beginning of the semester, Oliver had a new classmate, Alan, who had just returned to
England. Alan was assigned a seat next to Oliver. To his surprise, within weeks, he became good
friends with Alan even though they were poles apart in personality. Alan was popular, outspoken and
artistic. “Alan is all that I want to be,” Oliver thought to himself. He began listening to the music
Alan listened to and having similar haircut. He even quit his drama club and started playing the
online games that Alan played. He seemed to have been out of his loneliness.
It was not long before Oliver was introduced to Alan’s “cool” friends. He told himself that he
would try all means to be part of the group. He would follow them to the football games and join the
art club after school so he could spend more time hanging out with them. Oliver followed them
around laughing when they told jokes, agreeing when they had opinions—most enthusiastically at
the ones he disagreed with. He did not dare to differ in opinions as he would not want them to think
badly of him. This continued for several months. At last, Oliver felt relieved that he had finally fitted
in.
One day, Oliver overheard Alan and his cool friends talking. “Oliver is such a loser,” one boy
commented in a playful tone. “He just follows you around trying to be you. He copies you; he does
not have a personality of his own!” another boy exclaimed. Alan laughed, to make matters worse, he
added, “That fellow wears me out. I wish he would leave me alone. He thinks we are best friends. A
thorough fool!”

67. 【答案】Paragraph 1:
Oliver stood still to the ground and could not believe his ears. Trembling and sobbing, he collapsed on
the ground, feeling alone and betrayed. He had no choice but to cry all the way back home. Seeing his mother,
he couldn’t contain his sorrow, pouring the incident out to her, who would always be there for him whenever
he felt down. Stroking her trembling boy, the mother said gently, “just be yourself, Son! People will like you
for who you are. ” Oliver had heard the remarks a million times before, yet he never truly got the point.
Suddenly, it all clicked.
Paragraph 2:
Oliver decided to change himself after hearing his mother’s words. He bought a new schoolbag and chose
a haircut he fancied. He dropped his art class and joined the drama club. He made new friends who liked him
for who he was. He rediscovered himself. If he had not been given the chance, he might have been too
concerned with “fitting in” desperately to experience some of the “best” times of his life. It dawned on him
that despite the pain he felt that day, it was a gift they had given him, which taught him to be himself.
