In 2013, at 79, Jane Goodall helped return a chimpanzee(黑猩猩) named Wounda to the wild. As Wounda stepped nervously out of her cage, she suddenly leapt into Goodall’s arms, hugging and kissing her — a moment of pure grace that Goodall would carry forever. It felt like a thank you from all chimpanzees.
For decades, Goodall had lived among chimpanzees in Gombe. She had watched them swing and feast in the trees, delighted when they no longer ran away from her, and cherished the day when David, a gray-bearded chimpanzee, gently reached out to hold her hand. But what amazed Goodall most was when she saw David prepare a grass stem to fish — he was making tools. That single observation erased the line between humans and animals, shaking anthropology to its core. She had no scientific training. Drawn to Africa since childhood by Tarzan’s tales, she arrived in 1957 and, urged by Louis Leakey, immersed herself in the wild. Over 25 years, her careful records made her the world’s foremost authority on chimpanzees.
Her naming of them unsettled some of the scientists who preferred cold numbers. But Goodall could not reduce them to digits. They were individuals — Goliath, the fallen king; William, scarred and gentle, whom she nursed through fever; Figan, bright and brave. She noted every gesture, every call, every curious look directed at her, a pale stranger oddly blessed with endless bananas.
In 1990, she returned, only to find that Gombe’s borders were ruined — trees felled, earth barren, villagers desperate. Humans, gifted with language and foresight, should have been nature’s guardians. They were not. In 2002, she became a UN Messenger of Peace, though she preferred “messenger of hope”. From her youth, she had sensed a purpose. In Gombe, she found it. Among the shouts and screams, she would stop to watch sunlight pass through the treetops — moments that carried her beyond time, into life’s deep mystery. Hopeful and fearless, she knew her next great adventure awaited: dying.
24. What does Wounda’s hug of Goodall indicate
A. It was a carefully trained behavior.
B. It was not their very first encounter.
C. It represented gratitude from the chimpanzee.
D. It marked the start of Goodall’s conservation work.
25. What is a discovery of Goodall
A. Chimpanzees can make and use tools.
B. Chimpanzees are more active than expected.
C. Chimpanzees master various hunting techniques.
D. Chimpanzees naturally prefer to stay with humans.
26. What do the three chimpanzees mentioned in paragraph 3 suggest
A. Chimpanzees share similarities with humans.
B. Goodall had genuine affection and respect for them.
C Goodall faced many challenges in her research work.
D. Naming chimpanzees contributes to scientific research.
27. Which words can best describe Goodall
A. Hopeful and cooperative. B. Professional and humble.
C. Sensitive and conventional. D. Determined and courageous.

When danger approaches, many creatures seem to follow the ancient proverb that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”. Researchers have recently been finding surprising ways that animals communicate with other species in this kind of cooperative defense agreement.
For example, a recent study in Nature Ecology & Evolution documented more than 20 bird species on four continents that make virtually identical “whining” calls when they spot brood parasites (巢寄生鸟类) such as cuckoos. “That call is essentially the word for ‘cuckoo’ — gathering individuals to come together against this common enemy,” says study co-lead author James Kennerley.
Brood parasites lay eggs in other birds’ nests, tricking the host parents into raising their chicks for them. At a field site in Australia, Kennerley has witnessed individuals from a dozen or more species attack a cuckoo in response to a chorus of whining calls, which can be so ferocious that Kennerley and his colleagues need to cage the model cuckoo used in their experiments to protect it. Otherwise the attacking birds would have “just completely torn it into pieces”, Kennerley says.
Many birds also share a common vocabulary for enemies. Wildlife ecologist Erick Greene and others find songbirds and red squirrels use high-pitched “seet” calls to warn of flying hunters — too high for the hunters to hear. If the hunter lands, they switch to “attack” calls that, as Greene puts it,“draw in the group to drive that hunter out.”
Monkeys, lemurs, and chipmunks recognize other species’ alarm calls. In coral reefs, unrelated fish exchange visual and chemical signs to avoid predators (捕食者). But cooperative defense is not the only reason for cross-species communication. It may help birds migrate and enhance food intake among mixed-species monkey groups and dolphin groups.
“However, unlike with alarm calls, researchers aren’t sure if they give warnings on purpose or just randomly follow other birds. But clearly, very complex multi-species communication networks are common,” Greene says. “It develops a sense of connection among animals, encouraging them to keep an eye on one another in their shared surroundings.”
28. Why does the author mention the proverb in paragraph 1
A. To show that animals are similar to humans.
B. To explain how animals identify their friends.
C. To introduce the topic of cross-species cooperation.
D. To prove the changeability of cross-species relationships.
29. What does the underlined word “ferocious” in paragraph 3 most probably mean
A. Organized. B. Intense. C. Brief. D. Cautious.
30. What can be learned about the cooperative defense
A. It mainly happens among bird species.
B. It relies on researchers’ intervention to be effective.
C. It involves different species responding to a shared threat.
D. It requires animals to use the same type of sound to send warnings.
31. Which of the following may Greene agree with
A. Animals may not signal intentionally.
B. It’s urgent to protect certain species’ habitats.
C. Songbirds tend to use loud calls to frighten away hunters.
D. The multi-species communication is too complex to track.
D
The placebo effect, where a patient’s belief influences treatment effectiveness, was once dismissed as unscientific but is now recognized as a genuine therapeutic tool. In a new study published in Nature Medicine, researchers have begun to uncover its inner workings by revealing that positive expectations can boost the immune (免疫的) system’s response to vaccination (疫苗接种).
To explore the brain’s role in immunity, researchers from Tel Aviv University focused on the mesolimbic network, a brain region associated with reward-related behavior and also known as an area linked to immune function in mice. They gathered 85 volunteers for brain training that allowed them to influence nervous processes normally outside conscious control.
The volunteers were divided into three groups; one trained to activate the brain’s reward system, another trained to activate an unrelated network, and a third that received no training. Each group completed four sessions, in which those in training groups developed and improved their individual strategies to shift activity to the assigned region. Immediately after the final session, everyone received a hepatitis B vaccination.
Blood tests showed a strong connection between brain activity and the immune system. Higher activity in a brain region linked to pleasure and reward was associated with higher antibody levels. The researchers suggest this is the first direct evidence of a brain-immune regulatory (调节) system in humans.
The researchers found that sustained activity in the ventral tegmental area of the brain was specifically linked to positive expectations — hopeful thoughts about the future — and that this connection strengthened with training. In contrast, general positive emotions, such as pleasure or love, did not display such a relationship. The team’s research provides convincing evidence for the brain’s influence on physiology (生理学), and also helps to understand the biological mechanism of the placebo effect itself. Positive expectations have long been linked to placebo responses, but researchers have now observed their specific role. While more trials are needed, this brain-body link gives a potentially underused clinical tool a firmer scientific basis.
32. What does the study published in Nature Medicine mainly find
A. The placebo effect is unscientific to some extent.
B. Positive thinking can improve the body’s defense.
C. The mesolimbic network is directly linked to immune function.
D. Brain training is an effective way to influence nervous processes.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The process of the experiment.
B. The standard for participant selection.
C. The wide variety of volunteers’ strategies.
D. The difficulty in controlling brain activity.
34. What is the significance of the research
A. It supports the clinical use of the placebo effect.
B. It shows training strengthens general positive emotions.
C. It explains how pleasure directly influences physiology.
D. It identifies the brain activity linked to positive expectations.
35. Which would be the best title for the text
A. Hepatitis B: Vaccination Saves Lives
B. Brain Training: Thoughts Affect Health
C. The Placebo Effect: Mind Influences Body
D. The Placebo Effect: Immunity Promotes Happiness
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

As we are highly social creatures, social approval is embedded (嵌入) in our DNA. ____36____ The diverse experiences and perspectives can sometimes create conflicts. Although being disliked can feel upsetting, you can find value in it. Accepting that you won’t be everyone’s cup of tea can be empowering — especially when you learn to like yourself unconditionally.
It’s important to acknowledge and validate your own feelings. Recognize this: The fear of being disliked is a common response to the threat of social rejection. ____37____ Knowing this can help reduce the sense of shame that often accompanies it.
It can also be beneficial to reframe “all-or-nothing” thinking in a more realistic way. Ask yourself what is the worst thing that could happen if someone dislikes you — more likely than not, you’ll realize the fear is disproportionate (不成比例的) to reality. Remind yourself that others’ opinions are shaped by their own experiences, biases, and insecurities. ____38____
What also helps is coupling consistent acts of self-care and finding people in your life who make you feel understood, recognized, celebrated, and loved. Instead of reflecting on who might not like you and why, focus on building healthy, supportive relationships with others.
At some point, you’ve probably taken a dislike to someone. ____39____ Or the reasons are often superficial (表面的). If someone else dislikes you, it might be for similarly minor reasons. And most likely, it is not a reflection on you.
____40____ “When you develop self-acceptance, others’ opinions lose their power to control your emotional state,” explains Tina.“With practice, you can embrace the freedom of being your true self.”
A. They’re not always about you.
B It’s also completely understandable.
C. That feeling of dislike often stays with you.
D. And you might not even be able to explain why.
E. Ultimately, learning to please others is the key to happiness.
F. However, we often have to spend time with different people.
G. Overcoming the fear of being disliked starts with liking yourself.

Umbrellas dotted the white sands of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Beach, where we’d come for a family outing for the first time. The sun in the sky shone brightly, making everything feel like pure fun. After some effort, we found a good spot and spread out our towels. Nearby, an elderly couple sat under a large umbrella, the husband gently fixing his wife’s sunhat.
Looking up from his book, my son reminded my two grandsons — David and John — not to swim alone. “A rip current (离岸流) can pull you away from the shore,” he said. “Stick together.” Actually, he’d said that many times before, and I understood his worry. Still, I thought such a thing was unlikely to happen. Anyway, I was glad to spot a lifeguard high up in his chair, watching over everyone’s safety.
“We’re going in!” David said.“Wanna come ” He didn’t have to ask me twice, because I immediately kicked off my shoes and grabbed my sunglasses. Together, we ran ahead and splashed into the ocean. Soon we were all in water up to our thighs.
The boys rode the waves rolling into the shore, which is certainly not a game for a grandfather like me. So I stood there still, happy to watch them belly surf and tumble (翻滚) around. Each wave gently lifted me before setting me back down.
The boys swam back out for the next wave. It passed me first, lifting me up. A big one. I lengthened my foot, my toes ready to touch the ocean floor as I came down. I stretched in search of the bottom but nothing appeared. By that moment, I hadn’t realized the ocean had been pulling me slowly away from the beach. A rip current. Not good.
I tried my best to swim towards the boys, who were closer to the shore. In a few strokes (划水), I’d surely be able to stand again. But no matter how hard I tried, I didn’t seem to be getting closer to the beach.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Worse still, nobody heard my shouts for help.
