The Taklimakan Desert in the Tarim Basin is the largest desert in China.
For a long time, its sand has moved with the wind and harmed oases(绿洲). Controlling(控制) the sand and stopping its spread are among Xinjiang's biggest environmental challenges.
The journey around the Taklimakan Desert is 3,046 kilometres long. After over 40 years of hard work, people built a 2,761 kilometre long green shelterbelt(防护林带) around the desert through the Three North Shelterbelt Forest Programme. This green shelterbelt is like a “scarf” holding the sand.
The “Three North”areas cover 84% of China's desertified(沙漠化的) land. The Three North Shelterbelt Forest Programme started in 1978 to fight desertification.
On the morning of 28 November, 2024, workers finished the last 10 metre green belt around the Taklimakan Desert. Now, the green belt is all around the whole desert.
One important thing for making this “scarf” is plants that can hold the sand. In a plant garden in Bayingolin, there are over 200 kinds of plants. Researchers would pick the best ones to plant in the desert to stop the sand.
Besides plants, people also use photovoltaic(光伏) ways to control sand. They put solar panels in important places. The panels stop sand moving. They also make electricity and meet the area's energy needs.
( )1.What is the main environmental challenge caused by the Taklimakan Desert
A.It pollutes rivers in Xinjiang.
B.Its sand harms oases over time.
C.It stops the roads of local people.
D.Its strong winds hurt mountain areas.
( )2.Why did the Three North Shelterbelt Forest Programme start in 1978
A.To fight desertification.
B.To build more green parks for tourists.
C.To make a green “scarf” to make the desert beautiful.
D.To study different types of desert plants.
( )3.What is the advantage of using solar panels in deserts
A.They help scientists study desert winds.
B.They make the desert cooler for workers.
C.They stop sand moving and make electricity.
D.They reduce the need for planting trees.
( )4.What is the main idea of the text
A.Scientists are discovering new plants in Xinjiang.
B.Xinjiang's deserts are becoming tourist attractions.
C.Xinjiang uses both plants and technology to control deserts.
D.New cities are being built in deserts in Xinjiang.

Ⅰ.短文阅读
It's often said that animals are our friends. This story happened to Brantley Harrison and her family. Living in South Carolina, the Harrisons often take care of the injured(受伤的) animals and send them back into the wild when they feel better.
One October, a rescue group found a 4 week old injured squirrel(松鼠) and placed her with Brantley and her family. The Harrisons named the squirrel Bella. The little squirrel, along with three others, all lived together in a little “house” outside Brantley's home.
They stayed there until spring. In April of the next year, the Harrisons set the squirrels free. The other squirrels soon went back to nature, but Bella didn't, because she wasn't ready to leave her human family.
“Bella usually sits at the front door, waiting for someone to notice her,” Brantley said. Her husband John often brought Bella food, as she was usually waiting for him by the door. Bella became a member of the family.
The Harrisons said goodbye, but Bella had other plans. For eight years, she kept coming back to visit, never straying(偏离) too far into the wild.
( )1.What do the Harrisons often do for animals
A.They look after some injured animals.
B.They catch animals for meat in the wild.
C.They sell the animals to other families.
D.They send the injured animals to the zoo.
( )2.What made Bella different from the other squirrels after they were free
A.She was much stronger and healthier.
B.She could not live in the wild alone.
C.She knew how to find more food.
D.She didn't want to leave the Harrisons.
( )3.细节排序What is the RIGHT order of the following events
①Bella lived with the Harrisons.

When you think of a desert, what comes to your mind first Maybe a huge sea of golden sand. But guess what Recently, something amazing has happened in the Taklimakan Desert. It has a new colour—pink—because 100,000 rose plants are blooming(开花) there.
Last November, in Yutian County, Xinjiang, desert workers finished a big job. They planted 100,000 roses along the desert's edge(边缘). These roses are like green scarves around the desert. It's a new wonder of China's sand control work. More importantly, planting roses shows how much the workers truly care for the desert.
“People usually think of roses as flowers in vases(花瓶), but our roses are protectors of the sand hills!” said Maitusun Yibulayimu, a villager from Yutian County. He's right—these roses are beautiful, and their strong roots also hold the sand in place, and stop it from blowing away.
For over ten years, people in Qiemo County have also been working hard. They have built 93,700 mu(about 8,700 football fields) of grassgrids(草方格) in the desert.
Planting roses along the desert's edge is not the end. The real goal is to stop the sand from spreading. And soon, people and sand will live together happily. People work to build a “Green Great Wall”. These roses show that with hard work, even the desert can become a place of life.

①Following this law brings great benefits(for us).
②it protects the fish population, so that we can keep having fresh fish later.
Step 4
Living by the Laws of Nature
Nature has its own laws, and living by them makes our lives better. For example, there's a natural rule about fish breeding: fish lay eggs from May to September.
To follow this rule, people stop fishing during these months. They wait until the baby fish grow up. This is a common way people live in harmony with nature.
Following this law brings great benefits. To begin with, it protects the fish population, so we can keep having fresh fish later. It also shows us that respecting nature's rules benefits both humans and the environment.
四、The Wisdom of Small Reservoirs
A clever way people change nature is building small reservoirs.
They are man made water pools. When it rains, these small reservoirs collect and store rainwater. They can prevent water waste and keep water for dry days. Farmers can use the stored water to water their crops easily during dry seasons. This not only helps plants but also prevents water shortage.
Small reservoirs are very important because they greatly improve life in dry areas. In the future, they will still play an important role in helping us use water wisely and live a more comfortable life.第二课时 Understanding ideas(Grammar)
