Kites usually have light frame covered with paper or cloth. They are often provided with a balancing tail, and created to fly in the air at the end of a long string. The kite is usually held high by wind. Its name derives from a kind of bird, which is called kite (鸢), a member of the hawk family.
Kites have been in use in Asia from an ancient time. In a famous experiment in 1752, Benjamin Franklin hung a metal key in a kite string during a storm to study electricity. Kites were used to carry weather-recording devices (设备) in the sky before the appearance of balloons and airplanes. Types of kite commonly in use today include the hexagonal , the diamond, and the box kite invented in the 1890s. Newer wing-like kites, with pairs of controlling strings for easily moving, are also flown.
