Cuju, the ancient Chinese football, is the oldest football game in the world. According to historical records, it appeared in the Shang Dynasty and the equipment was a stone ball which was encouraged by the army to build up a strong body among the soldiers. In the Han Dynasty, it became even more popular and was written into military(军事的) science. There were no less than 25 kinds of the game.
It is said that the first emperor of the Han Dynasty Liu Bang was proud of his father who was quite good at playing the ancient football—Cuju. In the Southern Song Dynasty, the earliest football club or guild was set up and named “Yuanshe”. At that time, many writings and art works were created on the theme of Cuju, which showed its success. It was popular among all kinds of people—common people, royal families and city people. It was played by adults and children and both men and women. Although women in the old times had a low position and were kept away from many outside activities, the playground seemed to be the exception where they could appear in public.
However, it slowly fell into decline, maybe because of the traditional idea of peace and kindness. Today this game has been part of National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities of the People’s Republic of China.

Five Tips for Safe Running
We all know that exercise is good for our health. But some kinds of exercise may be better than others. Running, for example, may help to protect against heart problems and other health problems.
Running is a good exercise, but it can cause injury. Here are five tips to reduce the risk (危险) of injury.
Do not run too much, too soon or too fast. Most people get running injuries when they push their bodies too hard. The body needs time to adapt (适应).
Listen to your body.
Most running injuries come as expected. You may feel body aches, sore legs and so on.
Get good running shoes.
There is no single best shoes for every runner. You should find the shoes that offer the best fit for your feet. More importantly, you should change your shoes every 500 to 800 kilometres.
Take time after each run to write down what you did and how you felt. Look for things that happen over and over again. These notes will help you find the best exercise for you.
Train in the right way.
So physical fitness experts suggest some forms of cross training to improve balance and to help you stay injury-free. They say swimming, yoga, and riding a bicycle are good exercises. These kinds of exercise are easier on the body.

So we should eat and drink something healthy, ① vegetables and milk.We must drink water in time, especially in hot summer. When a person is hurt or suddenly (突然) becomes ill, people give him immediate care. We call it first aid. When there is a sudden situation, time is very important, so first aid plays a very important role. Immediate action is necessary when someone loses lots of blood or when breathing stops for a short time.
Everyone should know something about how to care for a person with a sudden illness. Even a small injury (损伤) can be very dangerous. And it may result in death, so everyone should know something about first aid.
When first aiders face a sudden situation, they must be able to keep calm and organize other people to help. They must know how to control blood and take care of injuries. Knowing how to move the injured without causing (引起) more injuries is also very important.

An idol (偶像) is someone who we respect or love. However, unlike many of my classmates, my idol is not a movie star, a famous writer or a singer. My idol is my dad.
When I was only a five-year-old boy, I was seriously ill. My mother and father both worked. This was a big problem. My dad knew how much my mum loved her job, so he stopped working to stay at home and look after me. My dad always thinks about others before himself. This made me start to respect him.
My dad later took a job and worked at night. He chose the job so that he would only go out for work when I was sleeping. He helped and supported me in everything I did. I remember when I was learning to ride a bike, I felt so safe because I knew he was running behind to protect me.
My family is not rich, and we do not have a big house or an expensive car. But my dad tells me that something is more important than money. My dad gives me his time. Although he is very busy every day, he always makes time to stay with me. He teaches me we do not need money to make ourselves happy. So we usually make and fly kites, go for walks in the countryside, and even cook together. He also teaches me that I can achieve anything if I really work hard on it.

If you had to list different ways of protecting yourself, sneezing probably would not be on the list. But when you sneeze, that is exactly what is happening. Sneezing helps you protect yourself from things like germs, dust, and smoke. In fact, it is the body’s way of getting rid of things that may harm you.
People cannot really control their sneezes. If something starts tickling the inside of our nose, our brain takes over. It knows that something inside the nose should not be there, so it sends a message to the body to get it out.
When we sneeze, many things happen in a very short time. Usually, our eyes shut, our tongue presses against the top of our mouth, and the muscles in our stomach and chest get tight. Next, a sudden blast of air comes out of our lungs and then our nose. As the air goes out of our nose, it carries germs, dust, and tiny drops of water with it.
Some unusual things can also make us sneeze. For example, some people sneeze when they look at a bright light. If people have an allergy, certain plants or animals might also make them sneeze. If they are allergic to certain plants, they might sneeze a lot in the seasons when the plants bloom but not in others. If they are allergic to dogs or cats, they usually cannot have one as a pet.
While sneezing is good for the person doing it, it can be very bad for the people nearby. Sneezing is one way that diseases spread.
Millions of germs from one sneeze can travel up to about 8 metres at a speed of 160 kilometres per hour! These germs can stay in the air, and if other people breathe in those germs, they can get sick too.
If you sneeze, always cover your nose and mouth. After that, make sure to wash your hands. Sneezing helps your body protect itself, but doing these two things can help you protect everyone else!

Yue was the youngest in the “Climate Action” climbing team. The project’s goal was to make people realize the danger of global warming by visiting snowy mountains.
“I loved nature when I was a kid. I often climbed mountains in Beijing. In recent years more and more news reports have talked about the environment being destroyed (破坏), and I feel quite upset about it,” said Yue.
“Mount Muztagata is an ideal place to research climate change because there are large areas of mountain glaciers (冰川),” said Yue.
Along the way, Yue also collected snow samples, which was part of the project’s tasks. The samples will be given to scientists to study how air pollution forms.
“We say ‘saving Earth’ every day, but I think taking real action is more important than just talking,” said Yue. “I hope my story can draw more young people’s attention to the serious problem of global warming. What I’ve experienced has shown that global warming is really not far away.”

Deserts may seem lifeless, but in fact many kinds of living things have developed special ways to live in the terrible environments. More than one billion people actually live in desert areas.
A place that receives less than 25 cm of rain every year is called a desert. More than one-fifth of the earth’s land area is the desert. Only about 20% of deserts are covered by sand. Some have mountains, rocks or lakes.
The hottest desert in the world, the Sahara Desert, even reached temperatures of up to 56℃. But some deserts are always cold, like the Antarctic Ice Sheet, which is colder than any other desert in the world. The coldest recorded temperature there is about 89℃. The driest desert, Chile’s Atacama Desert, has parts that receive less than 2 mm of rain a year.
Desert animals have their own ways to keep cool and use less water. Camels can go for weeks and don’t need to drink any water. Many desert animals, such as desert foxes, only come out to find food when the sun goes down. Most desert animals spend much of their time underground to keep cool. Desert plants may have to live without freshwater for years at a time. Some plants grow long roots that get water from deep in the earth. Other plants have roots that spread out a long way so they can receive the rain as soon as it falls, such as cacti.

Most people have heard of the Great Wall of China, but not many people outside of China know about the Grand Canal (大运河). This manmade waterway, known in China as Da Yunhe, is 1,700 kilometres long and some parts of it are more than 2,000 years old. It links (连接) the north of China with Hangzhou, a city in the southern part of the country. It’s the longest manmade waterway in the world.
It was built as a way to transport food from the rich land in China’s south to cities in the north. In fact, it’s not one canal, but a system of canals and rivers linked together.
It’s still an important part of the transport system in China. Thousands of boats use it every day to transport food and many other kinds of things.
China is now doing new work on the Grand Canal. It is making part of it deeper, so bigger ships can pass. The canal will also help to move water. There is a lot of rain in the south of China, but not so much in the north. The canal will carry lots of water from the south to the north.
The Grand Canal is much less famous than the Great Wall, and not very many visitors know it. But it sees the changes in Chinese history. It’s possible to go on a trip along some of the oldest parts of the canal. Visitors can see beautiful parts of China that others don’t see.
