A middle-aged man with a long beard was arrested (逮捕) by the police for disorderly conduct and property damage. “More charges might be added later,” said a police officer.
The man, identified as Bill Wild, checked into the Motel Five last night about an hour after sunset. Telling the receptionist that he would be staying four nights, he paid cash in advance. He then asked her where a grocery store was. She said that the nearest grocery store was John-Johns, which was only two blocks away.
The police said that Wild went to John-Johns and bought three gallons of honey and four gallons of chocolate. The checker asked him what the occasion was. He replied, “I’m trying to become a sweeter person.” The checker smiled at the joke.
Wild drove back to the motel. He opened all seven containers and poured them into the bathtub. He added warm water to the mixture and dipped a finger in it and sucked it. Then he placed his boom box on the bathroom floor next to the tub. He tuned the radio to an opera station. He got undressed, jumped into the tub, bathed and started reciting and singing loudly with the music.
Fifteen minutes later, the guest in the room next door phoned the clerk. She banged on Wild’s door, but he was singing consistently. She phoned his room, but he didn’t answer. Then she called the police, who arrived quickly.
“You just never know about people,” said the clerk. “He seemed so nice and friendly. Who’d have thought he was a bathtub-singing nut ” The police said this was the third time that Wild had been arrested for this kind of behavior.

As consumers rarely buy items alone but shop in sets or groups, either to save on delivery costs and time, to reach minimum purchase quantities for a discount, or simply due to habit, keeping products in the shopping basket, whether it is online or physical, before checking out is the common practice. Still, the existing recommendation systems have only considered product choices at the item level and baskets level by integrating purchase patterns and history with users’ step-by-step behaviour across transactions (交易).
“One critical factor that is often ignored is the price,” says Francisco Cisternas, Senior Lecturer of Marketing at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Business School. “Price is a key factor in consumer decision-making and it varies across consumers and product categories, so integrating price into recommendation systems is challenging due to its intricacy.”
It was because of its complexity that Dr. Cisternas and his co-authors introduced a novel approach that integrates price sensitivity, called the basket-augmented dynamic heterogeneous hypergraph (BDHH). “We aimed to address this gap by integrating price sensitivity and enhancing the connections among users, items and baskets to better match recommendations with real-world shopping behaviour,” he says. Importantly, the model doesn’t just treat each connection equally, but also factors in pricing data. By doing so, the model can accurately understand how sensitive different shoppers are to cost, as well as how this informs what they’re likely to buy.
The team tested their model across a range of datasets and compared it to existing recommendation systems. In nearly all cases, BDHH outperformed traditional models, especially in situations where price sensitivity played a major role. That means it was not only better at predicting what someone might buy next, but also when it comes to understanding why they might buy it.
In practical terms, the system can understand that a particular user often buys a particular cereal (燕麦) when it’s on sale. This ability to recognize deeper purchasing patterns enables smarter basket predictions that matches individual budgets and tastes, which could then translate into an enhanced shopping experience for users.
8. What do consumers usually do before checking out
A. Store selected goods. B. Compare goods prices.
C. Ask for low delivery fees. D. Refer to discount policies.
9. What does the underlined word “intricacy” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Availability. B. Complexity. C. Management. D. Judgement.
10. What makes BDHH differ from traditional models
A. It values users’ shopping moods. B. It offers practical pricing advice.
C. It faster adapts to price changes. D. It better knows causes of buying.
11. What does the example of cereal show about BDHH
A. It cuts spending on groceries. B. It shows users’ real thoughts.
C. It grasps users’ shopping rules. D. It boosts users’ love for cereal.

An experiment in Botswana suggests that painting eyes on the rear ends (臀部) of cows may help protect them from large animals like lions. Protecting cows could also in turn protect the lions from farmers.
Large predators(食肉动物) like lions are under pressure. Much of the land they used to live in has been taken over by humans. Many are even hunted. One serious threat to large predators comes from farmers, who often shoot or poison them after losing farm animals to their attacks. This has long been a problem in the Okavango Delta.
The Okavango Delta is an area where the Okavango River empties out. With its waters spreading out over thousands of square miles, the area is an important location for various wildlife. In the area, there are many small farms, with between 6 and 100 cows. Lions are the biggest threat to cows in the area.
Scientists from the University of New South Wales wondered if painting pictures of eyes on the cows’ rear ends might protect them. Working with over2,000 cows in the Okavango area, the scientists tested their ideas in a four-year study. The researchers separated the cows into three groups. They painted large eyes on the rear ends of one group of cows. The second group got simple Xs. The final group got nothing. The eyes worked well. Of the 683 cows with eyes painted on them, none were killed in the four-year period. Fifteen of the 835 cows with nothing on their backsides were killed. The scientists were surprised to learn even Xs seemed to give the cows protection. Only 4 of the 543 cows with Xs were killed.
Though the results show a simple way to protect cows from lions, the scientists pointed out that the method may have weaknesses. The researchers aren’t sure the fake(假) eyes would work so well if all of the cows had them. Also, over time, predators might learn to ignore fake eyes. Still, for now, it seems like a cheap way to protect cows in the area.
12. What is the biggest possible benefit of proecting cows
A. Improving farmers’ life quality. B. Controlling the number of predators.
C. Balancing the local ecosystem. D. Saving lions from environmental pollution.
13. Why is the Okavango Delta described in detail
A. To draw attention to cows’ safety. B. To introduce possible threats to cows.
C. To show the problem of the location. D. To give the reason for choosing this place.
14. What finding came as a surprise to the scientists
A. Cows’ eyes could scare lions away. B. Many of the cows with Xs were killed.
C. Xs could protect cows from lions too. D. Some cows with nothing on backsides were killed.
15. Which might be the best title for the text
A. Cows can be protected from lions B. Fake eyes are used to protect animals
C. Fake eyes protect cows from lions D. Animals are closely related to each other

Emily Harper sat at her desk, staring blankly at the math problems in front of her. Numbers and variables danced confusingly across the page, laughing at her every effort. At school, Emily was known for her artistic talents, but math had always been her weakness. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t make sense of it.
Her struggles only worsened in the 10th grade. The pressure to keep up with her classmates grew, and the poor grades shook her confidence. Her parents decided to step in. “We need to find you some help.” her mother gently suggested one evening.
Then came Mr. Jenkins, a retired local teacher known for his unique teaching style. Emily was initially resistant; the idea of spending extra hours on a subject she hated seemed like a punishment. But she unwillingly agreed, knowing something had to change.
Their first session was tense. Mr. Jenkins, sensing her frustration, didn’t dive straight into problems. Instead, he asked about her interests. When Emily spoke passionately about her painting, he smiled. “Math is like art, Emily. It has patterns and beauty if you know where to look.”
Doubtful but inspired, Emily listened as he began to explain concepts through visual examples. He used colors and shapes, turning abstract numbers into something almost tangible (有形的). For the first time, math seemed less like a foreign language and more like a puzzle waiting to be solved.
However, progress was slow. Weeks passed with minimal improvement, and Emily’s patience wore thin. A particularly difficult quiz left her in tears, convinced she was sure to fail. Mr. Jenkins said. “Remember, Emily, every artist starts with a blank canvas, Masterpieces aren’t created overnight.”
Encouraged by his firm belief, Emily pushed on. She began to see the connections between the steps, how each there, celebrating her successes, no matter how minor.
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Gradually, Emily’s confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help.
