Four Beautiful Beaches In Singapore
In Singapore, there are a range of special beaches where you can relax for a day. At these popular beaches, you’ll feel as if you’re in paradise (天堂) — like Bali. Here are four of the best beaches there.
Tanjong Beach
The white-sandy beach is man-made and it’s the perfect place to relax in the sun, read a book away from the crowds, or go for a swim in the ocean. Especially, the Tanjong Beach Club is a top nightlife spot for drinking cocktails (鸡尾酒) and enjoying water sports like surfing.
St. John’s Island Beach
You can enjoy a quiet beach on St. John’s Island. This pretty place has a beach that’s great for sunbathing, swimming in clear water, and having picnics away from the city. Visitors can also spot unique marine life (海洋生物), go fishing, and even rent cabins or bungalows to stay on the island. Make sure to bring everything you need — there are no shops on the island.
Coney Island
Coney Island beach is the perfect place to relax away from the crowds. This hidden destination offers a couple of sandy spots to relax — whether you’re walking or cycling around Coney Island. It is definitely one of the best beaches to visit alone for a therapeutic (治愈的) experience.
Pulau Hantu
This island has a quiet beach far from busy tourist spots. The island consists of two small islands that join at low tide. There’s soft white sand and clear blue-green water here, teeming with (充满) colorful corals and marine life. People often camp overnight on the island, as it is only accessible by boat.

I’ve spent my entire life as a younger sister. My older sister was the tall one, the academically gifted one, and the soccer genius. People saw me as a smaller, lesser-than version of my sister. Everyone loved her and I wanted to be her. Without realizing it, I constantly put myself in her shadow.
We overlapped in high school for one year. During this time, I felt trapped. There were expectations on me which were unattainable simply because we were two different people. When she graduated, I hoped the comparisons would end. That didn’t happen.
During a soccer game, I made a really good pass that was headed in for the game-winning goal. I heard my coach yell, “Good job, Acorn! ” That one word, “Acorn”, made me freeze. That was my sister’s nickname. “Acorn” was a cheer for finally being “worthy”. But, to me, it was demoralizing (令人泄气的). I felt I had only achieved some rite of passage (成人仪式) by finally being as good as my sister.
The next few weeks at school made me more aware of my compliance (顺从) in the situation. Teachers and friends kept asking me if I was applying to my sister’s college. I realized I had this immense amount of pressure on me to pursue things I knew I did not want. Finally, I decided that I would not be going to the same school as my sister.
In college, I was surrounded by people who were meeting me for the first time. I didn’t have to worry about having the teacher already expect more of me because of my last name. There, I had the chance to explore who I am. Admittedly, it wasn’t my sister’s fault that I lived in her shadow. It was my fault for making decisions that kept me there.
The first 18 years of my life were spent living as someone else and ignoring what I wanted. No one knew who I was, including me. The day I chose to be me, to find me, is the day I felt real. It was the first day I felt like a person instead of a carbon copy.
4. Why did the author feel demoralizing when hearing “Acorn"
A. Because she didn’t want to be noticed in public.
B. Because she especially didn’t like the nickname.
C. Because it meant she was not good enough.
D. Because it made her feel that she was a replacement for her sister.
5. How was the author’s high school life
A. Busy. B. Peaceful. C. Stressful. D. Adventurous.
6. College allowed the author to ________.
A. explore artistic talents

D. improve academic performance
7. What can we learn from the author’s story
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. Blood is thicker than water.
C. Every cloud has a silver lining.
D. Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

Wildfires in Australia, heat waves across Europe, floods in South Asia... Climate change continues to make headlines around the world, yet many people still find it hard to understand, as many of these events are remote (遥远的) from their daily lives. But every person contributes to climate change, with the average carbon footprint (碳足迹) reaching 6 tonnes every year. So the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has teamed up with Sony PlayStation platform, Dreams, to create an immersive (沉浸式的) virtual reality (VR) experience about climate change.
The experience includes high technologies that heighten (增强) it for viewers; 3D pictures, and surrounding sound that makes users feel like the noise is all around them. In the experience, your carbon footprint is shown as an 18-meter-high orange gas ball. This ball guides you through different everyday moments, like eating breakfast, which then turns into rising sea Level’s.
Ligia Noronha, director of the economy division at UNEP, said that 2.6 billion people play games, which makes gaming one of the biggest communication media on the planet. Since one in five gamers is under the age of 21 and many young people today are worried about climate change, there is a great opportunity to spur environmental and nature-focused action with gaming. Hopefully, the experience can push young gamers to take action.
“We want to take creative measures to deal with the problems holding people back from understanding their role in climate change,” she said. “By placing this story in VR, we hope to challenge some common misunderstandings and urge people to think about their carbon footprint in the same way again.”
“Gaming has a wide reach across the world, and has the power to bring social change,” said Kieren Mayers, director of environment and technical compliance at Sony Interactive Environment. “We have partnered with UNEP to explore different ways to use gaming and VR to educate and bring messages of hope and are excited to see this video as one of the first efforts in this.”
8. Why do UNEP and Sony work together

Cats are commonly seen licking themselves and animal companions. But once in a while your cat will lick you.
“From birth cats explore the world through their mouths,” says Anita Kelsey, a cat expert. Though cats use their nose to smell, they also taste and analyze scent (气味) using their mouth to learn about things. When a cat licks you, it is trying to get more information about you.
But more than that, cats lick who they like. “Cats lick us as a sign of closeness,” says Kelsey. “It’s a form of getting us clean as they do with other cats they have bonded with. They are also enjoying taking in our scent. They love armpits (腋窝), for example, as there is a strong scent there.”
In addition to its affection for you, a cat might lick you for a variety of other reasons. To start with, if your cat is regularly coming at you with its tongue, maybe it wants to mark you as its person. What better way is there to tell other cats to back off than by painting you with the special scent from their mouth
To deal with stress of fear, cats also lick. This behavior is especially common in cats which were taken away from their mothers very early, but it can happen in any cat. If the behavior seems to worsen over time, or is accompanied by nervous body language, you need to ask your vet about treatment.
It’s very sweet that your cat likes you, but sometimes the licking can get to be too much, especially because the sandpaper tongue can really hurt! To keep your cat from licking you, you can draw its attention away by a toy, brush it with a brush or simply walk away, or even just put a cardboard box before the cat. It’s worth a shot!
12. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us
A. Cats smell in two ways.
B. Anita Kelsey knows cats quite well.
C. Licking is an important way for cats to learn.
D. Cats use their mouth more often than their nose.
13. How can your cat easily keep other cats away from you
A. By following you as much as possible.
B. By fighting off all the cats close to you.
C. By using scent to attract your attention.
D. By covering you with its special scent.
14. For which purpose is a cardboard box placed before a cat
A. To take a funny picture.
B. To free you from its attention.
C. To make a house for the animal.
D. To set up a wall between you and your cat.
15. Which of the following can be used as the title of the passage
A. Why Does Your Cat Lick You
B. Cats’ Ways to Show Love
C. How to Prevent Cats from Licking You
D. You Know Little about Your Cat

Ella and Jenny were best friends. They had known each other since Jenny moved next door three years ago. They hung out almost every day after school, exploring the world around them. They had a lot of fun, but like any friends, they sometimes had disagreements because they were very different people.
Ella was a hardworking girl who did well in her school work, loved reading books, and took ballet classes. On the other hand, Jenny was outgoing. She would rather play soccer, chat with classmates at school, and couldn’t sit still long enough to finish reading a story book. In spite of their differences, they always found a way to have fun together.
Usually, they would play together at the park across the street. They would play on the sports equipment, race around the playground, or play soccer with a group of kids in their neighborhood. On rainy days, they would go in one of their houses to make artworks, play video games, or paint each other’s nails. They could spend hours and hours together.
While most days were filled with laughter and shared adventures, there were times when they couldn’t agree on what to do. One day, Ella wanted to play on the playground equipment, while Jenny preferred soccer on the freshly-cut grass.
Ella suggested they should play on the equipment as they had already played soccer for three days. However, Jenny, with her eyes shining eagerly, argued that they should play soccer because the grass in the field had just been cut and it was nice and short.
“We always do what you want to do, Jenny. Can’t we try something different for once ” said Ella, feeling upset.
